A total of 291 accidents were reported during the Easter period out of which 49 people died.

Zambia Police Spokesperson Charity Chanda says out of the total 291 accidents, 21 were fatal, 35 serious while 66 were slight injury accidents.

Mrs. Chanda said this represents an increase of 107 Road Traffic Accidents this year compared to 2014 during the Easter holiday when 184 accidents were reported, with 35 people losing their lives.

She said out of the 291 accidents reported this year 21 were fatal, 35 serious while 66 were slight injury accidents. These accidents left 49 people dead, 79 seriously injured and 93 slightly injured.

Mrs. Chanda said the increase in the number of people who have lost their lives this year is because of the 22 people who died in the Mazabuka and Kafue accidents which occurred yesterday.

And Mrs. Chanda says the driver of the Hino truck that was involved in the accident which happened in Kafue at the rail crossing last night has handed himself in to the police.

She said he is currently in custody and will appear in court soon for five counts of causing death by dangerous driving.
