Share

NON-FERROUS Mining Corporation Africa (NFCA) Chambishi mine has started constructing the US$832 million south-east ore body project in Kalulushi, which is expected to create 5,000 jobs for local people.

NFCA corporate affairs manager Nelson Jilowa said in Kalulushi yesterday that the project, which is expected to increase NFCA’s copper production capacity from 30,000 tonnes to 100,000 tonnes annually, will be commissioned in 2017.

Mr Jilowa said the project is expected to be completed by the end of next year but will only become operational in 2017.

“We expect to put that project into full production by 2017 and we will create 5,000 jobs for the locals. We are currently doing shaft sinking and tunnels,” Mr Jilowa said.

NFCA currently has 3,000 Zambian employees.

Mr Jilowa also said NFCA’s accumulative investment will exceed US$1.1 billion once all the projects are completed.

Mr Jilowa said the main ore body and west ore Body are currently in full production and that the total annual copper production capacity currently stands at 30,000 tonnes.

NFCA is a large-scale mining company operating in Kalulushi.

China Non-Ferrous Metal Mining Corporation Limited (CNMC) is the major shareholder in NFCA with 85 percent shares while the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mine – Investment Holdings holds the remaining 15 percent.

    • CAN’T THERE ALSO MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES FOR ITEMS THAT USE COPPER- EG POWER TOOLS, STOVES, FRIDGES, MOTORS FOR VARIOUS MACHINES, COMPUTERS, ETC. INSTEAD OF JUST MINING COPPER FOR CHINA AND OTHER COUNTRIES WHERE THEY USE IT TO CREATE MEANINGFUL JOBS FOR THEIR CITIZENS.

    • What has Sata got to do with this project?

Sata was so busy using taxpayers money for his medical tourism and his retirement houses he probably did not even know this project was happening!

He was a L!AR and a CHEAT that left Zambia in a mess.

This project is by the private sector, not Government.

    • @KC: You are right. This project was delayed because of Sata’s crazy misgovernance. Erratic tax policies, threatening behaviour etc meant that no sensible investor wanted to put long term money into Zambia. With the assurance that Sata is absolutely dead and gone, such projects can now go ahead.

  1. Clueless people are the noisiest.how does sata come in the picture.this project was approved by the sata government in september 2012 and preparations started in august 2013.

    • You are the one who is clueless. This project was started in MMD’s time and stalled during Sata’s time, I suppose because the Chinese did not want to pay his bribes. Now that the PFool is gone, the project can resume.

  2. This is the type of news Im interested in, developmental projects. Not the hate speech that we are daily bombarded with. I love my country, Zambia, and I pray for unity and a prosperous Zambia.

    • This is the news i also enjoy to hear my brother not always hearing of an UNDER 5 becoming next president which he doesn’t.Some people are just good at looking after cattle and not people.

  3. At long last my home town is coming to life once more. Brotheren kalulushi and chambeshi have the same copper ore and cobalt with some bit of gold in it.
