Zesco slay Bufalloes to spoil Chris Katongo’s return

Christopher Katongo’s return to the FAZ Super Division was spoilt on Sunday when Green Buffaloes lost 2-1 away to league leaders Zesco United at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

Katongo marked his first game back for Buffaloes since 2004 when he left the club to embark on an international career that took him to South Africa, Denmark, Germany, Greece, China and back to South Africa last season with Bidvest Wits.

The ex-Zambia captain almost mark his return with a goal in the 10th minute but his shot was saved by Jacob Banda before making way for Percy Bilyoti in the 85th minute.

Meanwhile, Zesco were not overawed by Katongo’s presence and stamped their authority on the match from start to finish.

Zesco took the lead in the 4th minute through a trademark volley from Mwape Mwelwa before Lottie Phiri equalised in the 44th minute.

Maybin Mwaba put the result beyond doubt in the 82nd minute to see Zesco stay five points clear of the chasing pack.

The win was the defending FAZ Super Division champions’ sixth successive league win in a run they have scored ten goals and conceded two goals.

And in the lunchtime kick-off at the same venue, Forest Rangers and Nchanga Rangers finished 1-1.

Joe Besa put Forest ahead in the 36th minute but Aubrey Chamulwanda equalised for Rangers in the 71st minute.
