POLICE in Kalomo are looking for the owner of a stray cow that was hit by a Toyota Noah vehicle, which overturned killing four passengers and a driver on the spot.

The cow also died on spot and police say they would charge the owner with the offence of leaving an animal unattended to.

The accident happened on Sunday around 23:00 hours on the Livingstone Road at Mukwela Township 15 kilometres from Kalomo town.

The driver, McEssential Sikwali, of Zambia Sugar area in Mazabuka, who was driving the Vehicle registration number ALC 5247, hit the cow as it was crossing the road.

Newly appointed Southern Province Police chief, Joseph Mutale said the motor vehicle, in the process, careered off the road and overturned killing the driver and four other passengers.

The vehicle was carrying 11 people and was said to have been overspeeding.

“As police, we have not yet identified the owner of the cow but officers are on the ground doing investigations,” he said.

Mr Mutale clarified that the total number of people who died on the spot were five and not six as reported in the media.

Among the deceased were Mr Sikwali, two men aged between 40 and 47, and two babies who were less than two-years old.

Mr Mutale said three among the six passengers who sustained serious body injuries were discharged on Tuesday after treatment.

Three others were still admitted at Kalomo General Hospital while four among the five bodies lying at the hospital mortuary were identified.

Mr Mutale called for safeguarding of livestock among communities and that police would not tolerate owners of animals to stray on roads.

  1. The Police also, what is there to look for? This is a simple case. The Accident happened in Kalomo, Southern Province. Doesn’t our Kwacha Billionaire Hakainde Hichilema aka HH own ALL the cows in Southern Province? This is a no brainer. Just do your maths

Nothing wrong with Toyota Noahs! Its overloading, overspeeding & an unattended to cow that cudn’t judge when to cross the road. These Noahs are so popular & hence their prevalance on the market. The highrate of accidents associated with Noah is proportional to number of Noahs on the roads. Equally if Prados were cheap & abundant the comparative rate of accidents of prados or any prevalant vehicle wud be high. Noahs are just handy. Ban Chinese Higer buses despite being big buses have highrate of overturning besides being highly susceptible to catch fire. Poor electrical engineering. Japanese Noahs rarely catch fire.

Thanx! That’s how it shud be. Compliment where necessary.
In fact blaming Noah vehicles is like blaming indigenous Zambians for being troublemakers in Zambia simply because 98% of prisoners in Zambia are indigenous Zambians. It wud be wrong to say Asians & Europeans are not troublemakers. 98% of prisoners are indigenous Zambians cos they are the majority in Zambia. Asians & Europeans also fill prisons in their countries cos they are majority. Hence my argument “Highrate of accidents associated with Toyota Noah is directly proportional to number of Noahs on the roads cos they are the majority vehicles”.

  2. “cow causes fatal accident” – um, you don’t think it had to do with an overloaded vehicle that was over-speeding. Cows are not small creatures – anyone that drives these Zambian roads at night knows to be extra careful…. or wait, maybe they don’t – maybe people still don’t abide by the laws and disregard the value of human life. I agree – the cow should not be allowed to just wander but this is not all the cow’s fault.

  3. so if a car is carrying 4 women each with a 2 monthes
old babt then that car wilk be said to have been carryibg 9 passengers

  4. @Mo. At Law, there is something called Animal Liability. If an animal causes an accident or whatever undesirable outcome in areas where it is not designated to be at the time of the said act, then the keeper of the animal is liable for whatever consequence. The keeper at Law is the owner. So, there.

  5. This story would have been very funny had it not been so tragic. Imagine the 11 people stranded on the side of the road after hitting and killing a cow. And then they treat themselves to loads upon loads of roasted beef.

  6. Maybe the driver should have paid more atttention to road signs if at there was one- e.g road sign with picture of animal on it. Those areas have lots of animal thus a need for road sign.
