GOVERNMENT has instituted investigations to establish whether the United Party for National Development (UPND) has a hand in the running of Radio Phoenix.

Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services Chishimba Kambwili said at a media briefing yesterday that Government is concerned with the radio station’s bias towards the opposition political party.

“No political party should have a hand in the running of a radio station. As Government, we have noted that Radio Phoenix is pro-opposition and anti-Government,” Mr Kambwili said.

The minister said if investigations establish that the UPND is influencing Radio Phoenix’s broadcasts, Government will revoke its licence.

“When Errol Hickey was running Radio Phoenix, it was professional and impartial but now it is no longer the case. You are ever promoting the UPND in all programming,” Mr Kambwili charged.

And Mr Kambwili said he had no hand in the firing of Radio Phoenix programme presenter Christine Ngwisha but rather she was allegedly fired by the radio station for hosting him (Mr Kambwili) on `Let the People Talk’ programme.

“For your information, ZNBC will employ Christine. So you have not achieved anything by firing her,” he said.

Mr Kambwili also took time to counsel Post Newspapers reporters against being used by their editor.

“People, including ambassadors, are complaining about The Post. You guys are young and still have a future. So be careful. Don’t be a star now because in the future you will need help,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Kambwili has said that deputy ministers, who for the first time attended a Cabinet meeting on Monday, are observers and are not participants.

“The deputy ministers are not participating in the deliberations of Cabinet. They are there to understand how we arrive at certain decisions,” he said.

Mr Kambwili further allayed allegations that Cabinet ministers receive allowances for attending Cabinet meetings.

    • Has Kambwili ever heard of Private Radio Stations, put up by private capital, operated as a private business, disseminating ideas, news and information for public consumption? Certainly not! In which century is he living? Where did they pick this man from? Unbelievable ignorance and arrogance. So Mr Kambwili, which platform do you want the opposition to use when you have denied them access to ZNBC in spite of the fact that they are part of the citizens who contribute television fees and pay taxes to run it? It is time we said jump into the lake!

    • Revoke licences for Radio Phoenix, Muvi TV, Post Newspaper (of late since being booted out of PF structures), Zambian watchdog (whoops! Can’t never!), Zambian Eye, Lusaka times (sometimes), Tumfweko (sometimes) except ZNBC, TOZ, ZDM, and Zambia Reports (Sakwiba Sikota/ Henry Banda’s publication for protecting RB and his allies’ loot).

    • Bwana IQ we are in Africa where transitions take long to mature, so in the meantime ZNBC is for the government (of the day) for the people, where same programs are shown over and over again with no sign of innovation!

    • Please Kambwili, save me from this stress. You stress us to much. PF has a hand in the running of ZNBC and is pro- Government and anti- Opposition and that way you are happy. In fact i get hurt each time i see K3.0 taken from the poor people when buying ZESCO bills to finance the running of your controlled institution and ZNBC can even show them what they want to see.

    • Chishimba Kambwili has no right to know how private media is run,let alone who should be hired or fired. If someone is fired let Fackson Shamenda sort out the matter.
Edgar Lungu should tell Kambwili to liaise with Shamenda.

  2. in a cabinet meeting, state secrets are sometimes discussed. so deputy ministers whether observers or participants become privy to the information which they should not have access to which clearly is a violation of the constitution because they are not sworn to oath to hear, see certain documents which are above their clearance. Lungu swore mu stadium before the chief justice that he will protect and keep the constitution of the land. ili ilyashi lyama cabinet meetings is a violation of that constitution. impeach this miserable nincompoop of a president. MMD/UPND and FDDs chifumu banda, do something mu parliament kaili!!!impeach the president!!!

    • Not hard to see the remit is to shut down ALL opposition. Once ALL media is singing from your hymn book, please expect it to get really noisy when the public sing along with their own chorus. I can hear it clearly…

Kambwili et al: We are winning, we are doing well, we have the country under our spell

The Nation: We are suffering, something smells, let’s cut our losses and fire the country’s bosses

      Chorus: Zambia Zambia Zambia

At least we can all sing the chorus together, right, Info Minister with the Mono-viewpoint?

  4. Hon. Kambwili must be careful the way he handles power. Radio Phoenix and The Post Newspaper are what helped usher PF into power, because government media was used against them. Surely power blinds and breeds intolerance!

    • I wonder if the politicians sit down to read some of these comments by bloggers , if they do they can learn a lot about their mistakes. Offcourse there are those comments which are provocative and meant to demean someone, however, certain comments are very constructive even if they may be against them.

Why do the people of Luanshya keep voting for this riffraff?

  11. People of Luanshya are economically distressed people. So Kabwili’s talkativeness makes them think he is the savior. Do you know that there’s another MP in Luanshya (Chungu). The man is bullied by CK all the time he says something.

  12. Lungu needs to grow a backbone and realise this man is causing more harm than good to his government, more so in his current portfolio. Every time he opens his mouth its threats and directives. This position requires a level of maturity as it is the medium between the government and its citizens and the global community to a larger extent. This reflects negatively on the entire country.

If like me you want PF out this Kambwili is what we need.Honestly you want PF to replace this Bafoon. It is only 12 more months and by election date he would have done so much damage it will be easier to get rid of Lungu.

  13. I would not worry about HH, as I always say, the man has a way of shooting himself in the foot at critical moments. His propensity for not listening to good advice by his more knowledgeable colleagues in his party is huge and inextinguishable. And some of his officials propensity to follow blindly everything that he says does not help him either. Look at that UPND MP who proudly went to town in Parliament ranting proudly about not attending national prayers when at that very moment HH was doing a u-turn, by the way is he attending parliament this week even with that public embarrassment? Anyway they say politicians have no shame.
Even after the famous prayer u-turn and other examples you don’t believe what I say about HH shooting himself in the foot? Has he become wiser and more…

  14. They say birds of the same feathers flock together. If we analyse Lungu’s appointments from Chama to Chishimba kambwili and all the other minions in state house then you can clearly see the thinking of Lungu. He is a Nsanda is a slim body. All his tactics are kaponya and NOT intellectual. It is a shame to have such people as leaders because the mindset of a kaponya is full of inferirity complexies that makes them intolerable and uncompromising – The PF Convention saga that ushered in Lungu as president. We may be at war for these guys to concede defeat next year.

  18. Imwe tu UPND atase, have respect to honourable Kambwili please. With all this pomposity and insults on leadership, do you think any reasonable Zambian will vote for you? If only you knew the damage you have caused to yourselves by belittling the Presidency and those in leadership, you can as well forget ever dreaming to smell the corridors of power. HH is so bitter for reasons known to himself and his tribesmen.
Who told HH that he will be president of Zambia kanshi, cause I fail to connect this illusion. HH WILL NEVER EVER BE PRESIDENT OF ZAMBIA, this is cast in concrete. Radio phoenix is so unprofessional in the way its presenters handle interviews and if in doubt, take a general survey and you will be shocked. People don’t tune to this stup1d radio station any more.
    In our set up,…

    • You can even come here and support this mad man? You must be a Chainama case as well. Not sure if Chimbwili has anything useful left in his skull. The fat lining is stopping normal signals to get to his small brain. I think just like Frank Bwalya, he needs urgent medical attention.
Kambwili, very shortly you will need this Post newspaper.

  19. Perhaps it is not so much the Post who needs to be careful – politicians of today, also, have a future, and they will also need help in the future. So Mr Kambwili perhaps take some of your own advice and pass it on to your colleagues. You will not be in power forever, and the Post and Phoenix are the ones who helped you to get to your current position, even if you are now wasting everything Sata fought for by bringing Dora into the Central Committee. Shame

  20. This is the most retrogressive government… Democracy means you have the right to align yourself or your business to any party! Radio phoenix is a private entity. In any case, where is media freedom?

  21. And you think current MPs serving in UPND can make better Ministers? Hell no, they are too pompous, arrogant and think of most Zambians as trash.
Don’t forget that HH is on record of saying that no President of Zambia can come from a compound like Chawama, Kanyama, Mandevu, Matero including Munali meaning that to HH and UPND, leadership is a preserve of the rich people only. Do you wonder why GBM is the vice president of UPND? So that they can tell you that they were super rich even before they came to politics and that whatever they do, as a poor man you cant question them.
Information has leaked that HH and UPND shunned the prayers and fasting at the Show Grounds because they were too many poor people, marketeers, born agains and Kaponyas and so they opted to be with so called rich…
