Former Ministry of Health Human Resources Officer, Henry Kapoko has appealed against the 2-year sentence slapped on him by the Lusaka Magistrate court on Monday.

Mr. Kapoko and his co-accused, Edwin Bushibantu , a Director of ESU Nursing School, has also applied for bail, pending an appeal hearing in the High Court.

In his appeal, Mr. Kapoko says the lower court erred, when it convicted him of receiving a bribe in the absence of evidence, to show that he solicited for the bribe.

He was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment by Lusaka Magistrate Lameck Ngambi on charges of abuse of authority of office.

Mr. Kapoko was also been asked to pay back 40-thousand kwacha, by Magistrate Ngambi.

And Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) has welcomed the sentencing of Mr. Kapoko to two years imprisonment by the Lusaka Magistrate court for abuse of authority of office.

TIZ Information Officer Charles Chulu says the sentencing of Mr. Kapoko will send strong self-control signals to would-be offenders.

Mr. Chulu added in a statement issued to ZNBC News that TIZ also hopes that the lesson of sentencing of Mr. Kapoko will compel public officers to refrain from engaging in criminal offences.

  1. The problems of the Africa are perpetuated by the very people that are supposed to end them. Cases of corruption need to be followed in a very methodical way. First freeze all bank accounts then forfeit all assets to the state and investigate all links to beneficiaries especially the FBI (friends bululus and in-laws) as well as girlfriends! and hold all of them to account. This way people will think twice about this public humiliation before greedily accepting looted money!

    • Spot on @ James Buga! I have always thought along these lines. The system needs to send a very strong message to offenders & would be offenders that they would be dealt with severely. I like the FBI bit; creative thinking!

  2. Normally, you would expect a wrongdoer to feel remorse and ask for forgiveness. Not in this country; you taunt the people you have disadvantage, look for greedy lawyers and money seeking ‘men of God’ to pray that you get acquitted!

  3. bottom line, most people have no morals in Zambia, morals have been eaten with nshima and sent ku sewage! why wake up and go to work and plan to steal large sums of money, and succeed in doing so and from a health institution! such selfishness ka kapoko! can there be development in a country? because there are still alot of utuma kapokos in govt institutions trying to come out all innocent, kanshi tuma crooks!
