UPND Vice President Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba
UPND Vice President Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba

Opposition UPND Vice President Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba has said that people will be shocked when he produces his Grade 12 Certificate.

Speaking to Journalists after his press briefing yesterday, Mr Mwamba accused the PF Government of trying to use the constitution to bar him from taking part in the August 11 general Elections.

‘All these are machinations of the desperate Panga Family because they think I don’t have qualifications but they will be shocked, I will not say much today but come that day for nominations, they will be shocked,’ he said.

He added, ‘ Remember, the MMD under Rupiah Banda tried to use the same trick on Michael Sata not knowing that the man had a University Degree, we know these tricks and all I can say is that they will be shocked when I produce my Grade 12 Certificate

Mr Mwamba also said that he was not concerned about reports that he may be not be picked as presidential running mate for Hakainde Hichilema in the August 11 general elections.

Mr Mwamba who is commonly known as GBM said he joined politics to serve the Zambian people and that he is not bothered about holding positions.

He said he is ready to serve the UPND in any capacity adding that the running mate is an administrative one which will be discussed at an appropriate time.

‘I am not bothered by this issue, look here, I joined politics to serve the Zambian people. If I wanted to enrich myself through politics, i could have stayed to continue running my businesses which are all over Africa but i joined politics to help the Zambian people,’ Mr Mwamba said.

  1. I think I will be shocked at the Secondary School that sold you the Certificate!!

But again it is not late to enroll in night school, thanks to the PF you are disparaging, there is a grade 12 exam in June or the London one. Again don’t shock us by hiring or paying a kid to write the exam for you.

    • Better if he went straight for a PHD, almost all pastors , MP and Zambian musicians are DR.

The official who earnestly begged ZWD for anonymity said the ‘higher authorities’ floated some names and ordered them to ‘do anything’ to produce ‘authentic’ certificates for the named so that they would not be disqualified from contesting in the Tripartite elections.
“My brother our jobs are at risk, we have worked hard all our lives to be here but someone unscrupulous just wants to take our jobs away because of their selfishness and love for power…” he lamented.

He mentioned Richwell Siamunene the Defense Minister, and his counterpart Davies Mwila the Home affairs minister…

    • Grade 12 certificate is very easy to obtain, it is a pity that the PF with all the tools at their disposal are discussing such a trivial issue. It seems MMD Chief Bootlicker has done this before or he knows the people hiring kids to write for them. How stoopid!

    • He has NO Grade 12 a certificate. He is just playing into HH not to exclude him.

What is shocking about a person revealing his cirtificate. I thought he would say; people will be shocked that I have a Masters or PHD.

This man run the defence ministry like a family business. He gave himself procurement contracts to supply food, boots and uniforms.

    • The Joke is on PF. In this day and age, do they really think a GCE O level is a serious qualification? Only in the KK times when you could get employed by having a GCE O level Cert. His business experience and what he has achieved over the years is way beyond any qualification in secondary school.

    • The problem in Zambia is most people think Grade 12 means Zambia Examinations Council just like most people still think a degree can only be obtained at UNZA. There are many other examining bodies that offer Ordinary Level Qualifications which is the equivalent of grade 12. “Cambridge Overseas Examinations Syndicate” is one of them. Anyone with an ordinary level certificate has the equivalent of grade 12. In fact the Zambian grade 12 certificate is not highly rated internationally because of leakages. I am sure the returning officers understand these facts.

    • I told you GBM Vhas money, but no brains. Why should people get shocked when he produces a Grade 12 Certificate when having one is the NORMAL thing? The opposite is actually true; we should get shocked when a prominent person in society DOES’NT have one.

  2. Amazing that GBM never went to UNZA, he is intelligent to be so successful with little education. I like people like him and Kalusha.

    • History has proven that qualifications are not the only means of success in as much as what is success varies from person to person, area, situation etc neither are they an indication of intelligence for we all are intelligent in one way or another.

  3. GBM if I were you, I would leave PF out of this. This constitution was produced by Zambians not PF and if you have no qualifications its your problem. You should be embarrassed that people are talking about the very minimum of qualifications about someone who was a Defence Minister. Shouldn’t we be talking about whether or not you have a degree?

    • Spot on! GBM it’s either you have a grade 12 certificate or not, why wait to surprise PF when you can easily put the matter to rest? I’m sure someone somewhere must have gone to school with you & they can attest to that. Let’s wait & see certificates that will be produced by aspiring MPs, we don’t expect to see new certificates for candidates who completed grade 12 in 1970…….

  4. Look here iWE, “I joined politics to serve you ht poor, If I wanted to be selfish, I would have dedicated all my time growing my businesses throughout Africa and making millions. But here I am, working tirelessly for the poor. There comes a time when you want to serve your people, and that time has come for me & HH to show that how to lead, how to reduce poverty, and turn Zambia into a successful country” – GBM

  5. Aaah GBM, you may have the certificate but to insinuate that the requirement was aimed at barring you is quite far fetched because the grade 12 certificate as requirement is too basic to use to block one single person who was even a Minister at some point. In fact this requirement was earlier proposed by the late Edward Shamwana in mid 90s as a minimum for councilor and NOT for MPs. FTJ and company refused,we can only guess the reason-the ripple effect would have been higher qualifications for higher posts including the Presidency which could have excluded FTJ in the 1996 election because by then he degree from Warwick University was not ready. GBM “with businesses all over Africa”,I would advise you behave like Dangote and help the country in a different way!

    • @ shooters you sound to have done well than GBM since you have those qualifications. Show us what you have achieved with those qualifications. Oh I thought you had qualification but sorry you are just a pure poor blogger. GBM knows how to make money than you who thinks its a matter of just learning untill you grow old thats when you start working for money. Learn while you are also investing thats how you achieve a lot in life!

  6. People must be proud of higher education papers not Grade 12. I will be ashamed with you GBM if you will only produce a g12 certificate during nominations. UPND should not be about one economic manager, all of you should desire to get more qualified. If you were picked as a running mate, are you going to rule us with your g12 certificate in an event your HH dies whilst in office?

    • Yes, the firs thing is school. No one can claim to know anything without firs learning it and basic learning starts in school. HH is claiming to change economic management if he wins, isn’t it because of his qualifications that he is making such claims? So for GBM, he should just produce qualifications and preferebly better than a grade 12 certificate. Don’t compare running a personal business to running a country. You can be successful in a business even when you pay your workers slave wages, keep your cash under the pillow, and micro manage every aspect of the business, but for a country you will need a better strategy.

    • IWE YOU ONLY PRODUCE WHAT YOU ARE ASKED TO. WHY SHOULD YOU GO FORWARD AND PRODUCE PHDs WHEN ASKED FOR A SIMPLE CERTIFICATE. ECHO MUFELUKILA KU MASUKULU. UBUPUBA BWEKA BWEKA!

    • @manda. Lets hope GBM is not thinking like you, shallow thinking. If I may ask, Do you know why people like gbm will always remain in politics even when they have a lot of money? It is becoz running businesses now requires education while for people like gbm, they will always rely on government tenders period.an educated b/man aligns his business with ever changing business trends while uneducated ones will do same things year in year out. Why? its because they cant think beyond what has made them rich. Tell me if GBM has diversified from what he has been doing. The answer is no. Limited knowledge leads to limited thinking.

    • @shooters I see why people like you will always remain poor until death. Businesses vary for Christ sake. How bad is it if the govt feels they can use my services for their advantage and why should i refuse money? School is important but its not everything. There are people doing businesses and are successful without even having gone to school, while we have many PHD holders in society literally having nothing to show that they have achieved apart from that paper. You are just jealous of a hard working man especially that he left PF.

  7. I may not like GBM’s style but one thing I admire is his entrepreneurial acumen. He has achieved what many of us graduates would never accomplish in our lifetime. On that front alone, the man deserves respect. In Zambia, we have self-claimed entrepreneurship gurus and briefcase economists yet someone doesn’t even have a ka ntemba, you know them, I will not mention their names. They’re all over on TV ,Facebook, Newspapers offering advice on how to be an entrepreneur. GBM, Mahtani and many big businessmen who have employed hundreds in our country must be celebrated.

    • There are so many factors that you are forgetting when you talk of GBM and Mahtani’s successful business careers. First these people started when there was very little competition both in Zambia and globally. So you did not need to be very skillful to be successful then. But having the same level of basic skills now would’nt get you very far. Also these are personal businesses, so what goes on inside is not privy to you. Sometimes they would have practices that you would not tolerate but because it is a personal business, it’s got to be the way they want. So such ‘success’ is unique according to individuals.

  8. gbm which school and exam centre did you write from we shall wait and see. you bought it from matero at chifwani school you only went up to grade 6

  9. What is education with poverty all over you?? Would you rather be a well fed slave or hungry free man?? Ask the late Lucky Dube

  10. Examination Council of Zambia should guard their record, there will be a lot of fabrication from some politicians. There must be a mechanism in place to ensure that all those sitting for the upcoming exams before elections are properly identified. Anyone having a name same as someone in politics must be properly scrutinised. If indeed some people have the G12 Certificate as they are boasting I am sure people at ECZ/cambridge can check that even now.

  11. ATI PEOPLE WILL BE SHOCKED WHEN I WILL PRODUCE MY G12 CERTIFICATE. ATI PF GOVT HAS SIGNED NEW CONSTITUTION TO PREVENT GBM FROM CONTESTING. THIS IS REALLY SHAMEFUL FOR THE MAN OF HIS STATURE TO CRY OVER G12 QUALIFICATION. WE KNOW HIM, HE IS VERY CORRUPT, WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED IF HE HAS PAID HEAVILY AT ECZ TO MANUFACTURE THE PAPER. BUT BE ASSURED THAT WE SHALL GO TO THE SCHOOL WHEN YOU SAT FROM AND ASK EVERYONE WHO SAT THAT YEAR IF INDEED THEY SAW YOU IN SKUL UNIFORM! LOL! EVEN THE HEADTEACHER WILL BE PURSUED. ALL KASAMA PEOPLE KNOW VERY WELL THAT YOU RAN AWAY FROM SKUL THROUGH THE WINDOW IN G6.

  12. What does the legal text say in the constitution? Is it a “Grade 12 certificate from Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ)” or does it say a ” Grade 12 certificate from ECZ or its equivalent from a recognized institution” . When GBM says he surprise people,it means just that! We need to see and understand the text because if it says the former, only G 12 from ECZ,then it lacks wider comprehension because some people attain high school in other countries so they have no Grade 12 certificates! A requirement for education is important but we cannot limit to local institutions only, we need to be global in thinking people the world is dynamic. What more with the dual citizenship with people who were born and educated abroad wishing to participate in the political leadership of the…

    • (1) Subject to clause (2), a person is eligible to be elected
as a Member of Parliament, if that person
      30 (a) is a citizen;
      (b) is at least twenty-one years old;
      (c)is a registered voter;
      (d) has obtained, as a minimum academic qualification, a grade twelve certificate or its equivalent;

So as you can see, it’s G12 or its equivalent. So you can have a Malawian, Zim or SA etc ECZ-G12 equivalent to be eligible

  13. Time for all these to start preparing for University of London GCSE Ordinary Level. .it’s never too late..although I detest him as a politican I respect him for attaining self education to be successful even people with PHDs and doctorates don’t have it!

  14. Ba mudala you could have just kept quiet than exhibiting ubwaiche. With your G12 certificate you should have gone quietly and presented the nominations, if you have any. You are a successful business man and you can’t have both. I respect you for that. Mr mwamba if you can show me what you achieved in the last few years in government or as defence minister, then you will have my vote in August. Remember Mr Chawa has made possible for us now to vote even if you are in diaspora.

  15. Problem is some people tend to be shallow just to make an argument against an issue. GBM don’t allow these petty people make you fall into their shallowness. If you have your G12 you have it. Simple. Me, I admire your business acumen. No wonder Mooky Makura was so impressed with you on Zambezi magic. I was so impressed watching a compatriot who has achieved so much from a humble background. You are just a genius on that score.

  16. EXAMINATION CZ SHUD PUT SECURITY MEASURES IN PLACE.
AS FOR GBM AVOID IF U DONT HAVE U WILL BE ARRESTED LIKE WHAT HAPPENED TO MASUMBA
NB CERTIFICATES HAVE SERIAL NUMBERS WHICH WILL SHOW WHEN AND WHERE.
I CAN BE YO TEACHER FREE OF CHARGE BA VICE PRESIDENT
HH HAS DEVELOPED BP HE DOES KNOW WHERE HE IS GOING TO GET CASH TO PAY CREDITS ANGLO NAI FWASA LINE.
BA GBM BALI BANYENGELELA ATI HE IS GOING TO BE GIVEN NCHANGA MINE THIEVES SHAME

  17. Kudos to the artchitects of the new clauses! All dunderheads will simply bid politics goodbye or go back to class and local politics will move a notch higher. Low literacy level at this digital era do not correspond as it ends up in much idle talk and lip service. 50%+1 is another tough clause where jokers will be eliminated from the race which inevitably ends as a two-horse race ending in a national, not regional outlook win. Amassing half of all the votes cast and exceeding by at least one vote is no child’s business. Meanwhile, the post of the VP will also be respectable and no longer ‘a hire and fire at will’ office.

  18. top Examination Council of Zambia (ECZ) officials has revealed that examination authority they have been ordered to produce grade twelve certificates for some named ministers or ‘bid farewell’ to the jobs.

The official who earnestly begged ZWD for anonymity said the ‘higher authorities’ floated some names and ordered them to ‘do anything’ to produce ‘authentic’ certificates for the named so that they would not be disqualified from contesting in the Tripartite elections.

He mentioned Richwell Siamunene the Defense Minister, and his counterpart Davies Mwila the Home affairs minister as…

    • What personal business has Lungu run successfully ?

He took over a successful law firm and all he did was to chew clients money. He flopped and stopped practicing and joined politics.

This same Lungu took over a moderately good economy. Results after 12 months?
Dying economy, highly indebted poor country (HIPC), triple inflation , 100%?kwacha devaluation etc

  20. When a politician says I will do this or that ..it means the opposite. GBM is no different. By saying he will provide a g12 certificate, it means he does NOT have one.

He is buying time. And will end up confusing UPND. GBM is not only lying to the nation but confusing UPND. If I will HH (which I would never be), I would demand all my MPs and potential running mate/s have a Pre-qualification for nomination done before it tooo late.

In simple terms GBM does not want to show his academic weaken wrt intra party politics.

    • @Panafricanist
I agree with you 100% If GBM had a grade 12 certificate he could just have gone ahead and given it to the public. But as he says, “we will be shocked” when he produces one because we all know he does not have one. If he learnt his English well, he could have said “We will be surprised” when he produces one and not that “we will be shocked”.

  21. Some very hilarious comments, have been chuckling through them. Thanks for some lightheartedness for a change:) I am told it is more difficult to forge a grade 12 certificate than a degree, diploma or higher certificate.

  22. This Constitution thing is going to injure a lot of characters!!! already, Article 131(1)(h) provides that:
A person is qualified to be a candidate for election as a PRESIDENT if that person HAS A GOOD RECORD OF SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC!!
I’m just thinking loudly because I don’t know if our Church Elder Hechi Hechi has a good record of service to the public!
This clause is subject to serious Constitutional Interpretation and someone should just get prepared for legal battles that are likely to ensue over this clause!!!
    Let the game begin!!!!!

    • My Friend , that Article 131 (1) (h) does not affect our Under 5 HH. He has an impeccable and good public service record. He helped sell the mines when the nation could not find buyers. That is a great service to the public and a good one for that matter.

  23. Well GBM, You may not have formal qualifications but one thing for sure it that you remain a person to look up to when it comes to business. You have the money and you have the brain. Entrepreneurs, not all are very educated. Please be happy you have attained what some of us may not reach!

  24. The old and famous adage that says ” the guilty are afraid”. Of all the people in Zambia, why is GBM the only one commenting on this requirement?
I believe serious minded people like President Lungu have already mapped out the strategy to amass over 65% of the cast votes.
ECL is too intelligent and very likeable by Zambians and these on top of his good political strategies have put him far ahead. I will not disclose much but the man is already won these elections.
    Viva ECL

  25. Quoting Louis L’amour, education simply means one does not “understand anything unless it’s written or drawn for them.’

  26. That is the problem of shallow constitutions. If you have one ‘O’ level , you will awarded a certificate, so ho many ‘O’ levels are required?

  27. There is a difference between learning and education. I shall not comment any further, my head hurts just thinking about this hahahaha.

    Viva president Nawakwi.

  28. How do these ars$holes think? Not every person has a Grade 12 certificate issues by Examination Council of Zambia. How about those who have Cambridge School Certificate and GCE 0rdinary levels? Even those thinking of forging, any person above 55 years cannot have certificate issued by Examination Council of Zambia. Most of us wrote Cambridge Overseas Examinations. Let us wait and see!

    • @Kimbaguist
Before you blurt out what ever moonlight dawns on you, it is better to try and understand what is contained in the amended constitution. Mention is made not only of a Grade 12 certificate but also of its equivalent. I hope you know what that means.

  29. I smell a rat, GBM should show proof of classmates and possibly a class teacher. I don’t anything to do with qualifications of GBM. This guy knows that he was minister cos of King cobra, it was all nepotism

  30. WHICH SCHOOL DID GBM DO HIS GRADE 12? WHERE DID HE WRITE HIS EXAMS FROM? IF ITS TUITION WHICH TEACHERS? CLASSMATES? HEADS WILL ROLL AT ECZ. PF HAS ALREADY DONE ITS HOME WORK. IF ITS THE METRIC SYSTEM OP WILL FOLLOW IT. GBM YOU WERE AT CHIFWANI AND YOU DROPPED OUT IN GRADE 6. ALL THE KASAMA PIPO KNOW THIS FACT. WE ARE ALSO AWARE THAT WHEN YOU BECAME MINISTER OF DEFENCE BA SATA ASKED YOU TO IMPROVE YOUR LANGUAGE AND A TEACHER WAS ENGAGED AND WE KNOW HIM

  31. So if he got an English Teacher knowing what Sata was going through do you thing GBM was stupid not to attempt his high school Certificate. Kafusha it is obvious that GBM did night school which is encouraged.

  32. To be honest, if GBM has not gone beyond grade 12 then the man must be a genius. Look at what he has achieved? I remember listening to his interviews when he was a minister of whatever, I marveled at how he could articulate some issues. Politics aside, let us give credit where it is due mwe bantu mwe

  33. who says he has not got grad 12 he was with us in kasama and v use to call him bigg he was very cleverand his father was the only black zambian with a shop so people stop talking sheet about people it was his father and mwenso

  34. I don’t get why everyone is getting worked up over a grade 12 certificate. Look at the man, has he made a success of his life despite not getting any formal education? What have you guys done with all that formal education? Ended up working for someone else? And you will never even come close to the success this primary school drop out has achieved.

  35. The constitution is a national document, proposed by it’s citizens. It is not a party document. Zambians have spoken. Imagine if we had wanted a degree for MP’s as a qualification. How many would have qualified? It is not that Zambians are not educated, a lot of educated ones dont do politicts because the majority in politics are not educated, hence the reasoning levels are far apart. That is why we see less development in areas represented by below grade 12 MPs. It is easy for a less educated person to pick a panga and fight. A schooled person will reason. A rich man once told me to burn my certificates for me to be shown how to do business successfully. I thought he was grazy. Reason, it’s simlpe. A educated person will just try a bit to do business and when it becomes tough, he…

  36. GBM was born rich. His father was rich. His mother was a very strong business woman. Unfortunately sch has never been a priority for him. I remember he used to supply beans to ZNS when I was doing my compulsory military training after form v.

He’s just one irritating show off
