Opposition UPND Vice President Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba has said that people will be shocked when he produces his Grade 12 Certificate.
Speaking to Journalists after his press briefing yesterday, Mr Mwamba accused the PF Government of trying to use the constitution to bar him from taking part in the August 11 general Elections.
‘All these are machinations of the desperate Panga Family because they think I don’t have qualifications but they will be shocked, I will not say much today but come that day for nominations, they will be shocked,’ he said.
He added, ‘ Remember, the MMD under Rupiah Banda tried to use the same trick on Michael Sata not knowing that the man had a University Degree, we know these tricks and all I can say is that they will be shocked when I produce my Grade 12 Certificate
Mr Mwamba also said that he was not concerned about reports that he may be not be picked as presidential running mate for Hakainde Hichilema in the August 11 general elections.
Mr Mwamba who is commonly known as GBM said he joined politics to serve the Zambian people and that he is not bothered about holding positions.
He said he is ready to serve the UPND in any capacity adding that the running mate is an administrative one which will be discussed at an appropriate time.
‘I am not bothered by this issue, look here, I joined politics to serve the Zambian people. If I wanted to enrich myself through politics, i could have stayed to continue running my businesses which are all over Africa but i joined politics to help the Zambian people,’ Mr Mwamba said.
I think I will be shocked at the Secondary School that sold you the Certificate!!
But again it is not late to enroll in night school, thanks to the PF you are disparaging, there is a grade 12 exam in June or the London one. Again don’t shock us by hiring or paying a kid to write the exam for you.
Better if he went straight for a PHD, almost all pastors , MP and Zambian musicians are DR.

The Joke is on PF. In this day and age, do they really think a GCE O level is a serious qualification? Only in the KK times when you could get employed by having a GCE O level Cert. His business experience and what he has achieved over the years is way beyond any qualification in secondary school.
The problem in Zambia is most people think Grade 12 means Zambia Examinations Council just like most people still think a degree can only be obtained at UNZA. There are many other examining bodies that offer Ordinary Level Qualifications which is the equivalent of grade 12. “Cambridge Overseas Examinations Syndicate” is one of them. Anyone with an ordinary level certificate has the equivalent of grade 12. In fact the Zambian grade 12 certificate is not highly rated internationally because of leakages. I am sure the returning officers understand these facts.
I told you GBM Vhas money, but no brains. Why should people get shocked when he produces a Grade 12 Certificate when having one is the NORMAL thing? The opposite is actually true; we should get shocked when a prominent person in society DOES’NT have one.

History has proven that qualifications are not the only means of success in as much as what is success varies from person to person, area, situation etc neither are they an indication of intelligence for we all are intelligent in one way or another.

Aaah GBM, you may have the certificate but to insinuate that the requirement was aimed at barring you is quite far fetched because the grade 12 certificate as requirement is too basic to use to block one single person who was even a Minister at some point. In fact this requirement was earlier proposed by the late Edward Shamwana in mid 90s as a minimum for councilor and NOT for MPs. FTJ and company refused,we can only guess the reason-the ripple effect would have been higher qualifications for higher posts including the Presidency which could have excluded FTJ in the 1996 election because by then he degree from Warwick University was not ready. People must be proud of higher education papers not Grade 12. I will be ashamed with you GBM if you will only produce a g12 certificate during nominations. UPND should not be about one economic manager, all of you should desire to get more qualified. If you were picked as a running mate, are you going to rule us with your g12 certificate in an event your HH dies whilst in office?
Yes, the firs thing is school. No one can claim to know anything without firs learning it and basic learning starts in school. HH is claiming to change economic management if he wins, isn’t it because of his qualifications that he is making such claims? So for GBM, he should just produce qualifications and preferebly better than a grade 12 certificate. Don’t compare running a personal business to running a country. You can be successful in a business even when you pay your workers slave wages, keep your cash under the pillow, and micro manage every aspect of the business, but for a country you will need a better strategy.

I may not like GBM’s style but one thing I admire is his entrepreneurial acumen. He has achieved what many of us graduates would never accomplish in our lifetime. On that front alone, the man deserves respect. In Zambia, we have self-claimed entrepreneurship gurus and briefcase economists yet someone doesn’t even have a ka ntemba, you know them, I will not mention their names. They’re all over on TV ,Facebook, Newspapers offering advice on how to be an entrepreneur. GBM, Mahtani and many big businessmen who have employed hundreds in our country must be celebrated.
There are so many factors that you are forgetting when you talk of GBM and Mahtani’s successful business careers. First these people started when there was very little competition both in Zambia and globally. So you did not need to be very skillful to be successful then. But having the same level of basic skills now would’nt get you very far. Also these are personal businesses, so what goes on inside is not privy to you. Sometimes they would have practices that you would not tolerate but because it is a personal business, it’s got to be the way they want. So such ‘success’ is unique according to individuals.

Examination Council of Zambia should guard their record, there will be a lot of fabrication from some politicians. There must be a mechanism in place to ensure that all those sitting for the upcoming exams before elections are properly identified. Anyone having a name same as someone in politics must be properly scrutinised. If indeed some people have the G12 Certificate as they are boasting I am sure people at ECZ/cambridge can check that even now.

What does the legal text say in the constitution? Is it a “Grade 12 certificate from Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ)” or does it say a ” Grade 12 certificate from ECZ or its equivalent from a recognized institution” . When GBM says he surprise people,it means just that! (1) Subject to clause (2), a person is eligible to be elected
as a Member of Parliament, if that person
30 (a) is a citizen;
(b) is at least twenty-one years old;
(c)is a registered voter;
(d) has obtained, as a minimum academic qualification, a grade twelve certificate or its equivalent;
So as you can see, it’s G12 or its equivalent. So you can have a Malawian, Zim or SA etc ECZ-G12 equivalent to be eligible

When a politician says I will do this or that ..it means the opposite. GBM is no different. By saying he will provide a g12 certificate, it means he does NOT have one.
He is buying time. And will end up confusing UPND. GBM is not only lying to the nation but confusing UPND. If I will HH (which I would never be), I would demand all my MPs and potential running mate/s have a Pre-qualification for nomination done before it tooo late.
In simple terms GBM does not want to show his academic weaken wrt intra party politics.

I agree with you 100% If GBM had a grade 12 certificate he could just have gone ahead and given it to the public. But as he says, “we will be shocked” when he produces one because we all know he does not have one. If he learnt his English well, he could have said “We will be surprised” when he produces one and not that “we will be shocked”.

This Constitution thing is going to injure a lot of characters!!! already, Article 131(1)(h) provides that:
A person is qualified to be a candidate for election as a PRESIDENT if that person HAS A GOOD RECORD OF SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC!!

This clause is subject to serious Constitutional Interpretation and someone should just get prepared for legal battles that are likely to ensue over this clause!!!

My Friend , that Article 131 (1) (h) does not affect our Under 5 HH. He has an impeccable and good public service record. He helped sell the mines when the nation could not find buyers. That is a great service to the public and a good one for that matter.

I believe serious minded people like President Lungu have already mapped out the strategy to amass over 65% of the cast votes.

Grade 12 meaning this guy completed school after 1983 as 1983 were the last form fives (5).

I don’t get why everyone is getting worked up over a grade 12 certificate. Look at the man, has he made a success of his life despite not getting any formal education? What have you guys done with all that formal education? Ended up working for someone else? And you will never even come close to the success this primary school drop out has achieved.
The constitution is a national document, proposed by it’s citizens. It is not a party document. Zambians have spoken. Imagine if we had wanted a degree for MP’s as a qualification. How many would have qualified? It is not that Zambians are not educated, a lot of educated ones dont do politicts because the majority in politics are not educated, hence the reasoning levels are far apart. That is why we see less development in areas represented by below grade 12 MPs. It is easy for a less educated person to pick a panga and fight. A schooled person will reason.
