Opposition MMD leader Nevers Mumba has refuted media reports that the party has opened talks with other political parties with the intention of forming an alliance ahead of the August 11 polls.
Dr Mumba said the MMD is yet to engage any political party and has urged the public to dismiss the ongoing reports.
He said the decision on whether to enter into an alliance will depend on the resolution of the National Executive Committee.
Dr Mumba did not however rule out any possibilities of the MMD entering into an electoral pact.
The MMD leader was speaking Monday morning when he featured on a live special programme on Hot FM from his residence in Kabulonga, Lusaka.
“At this stage, we have not engaged any political party to discuss issues of alliances as we go to the elections. We are yet to table the matter at the NEC and until that is done, all these are mere speculations,” Dr Mumba said.
He added, “What is important to note however is that with the amended constitution in place, all political parties must start positioning themselves on how to respond to the issue of the 50+1 clause and focusing on individual parties’ s strengths.”
I like Dr. Mumba because he is realistic, unlike other political parties that are pretending like they can go it alone.

MMD is no factor in this election. In the last election Mumba only got 15,000 votes. Even he had given those to UPND, Edgar still have won. Mumba does not control MMD but Rupiah does.
Mumba, don’t try to make your party appear as if it’s on demand for a pact. MMD is dead and any association with it spells death for that party. Look at PF, their association with RB, Dora and other hungry scroungers has sent the PF to it’s early grave. VIVA HH…VIVA UPND!

Although 2016 elections is a two- horse race between PF and UPND, it is a high time to seek good relations with the other smaller parties to tilt the balance. Whichever side of the political divide these ‘donkey parties’ incline in the event of a runoff, a win is obvious. 50%+1 is no joke and you (PF&UPND) should not ‘insult the crocodiles’ before you cross the river. Nevers seems to have learnt the ‘signs of the times’ early.

The connotation of alliances is about sharing positions in this part of the world. These alliances are mainly formed to share positions in gov’t and not to serve the public. I think the only alliance I’m willing to trust would be an UPND-FDD-ADD or any 3-2 permutation involving UPND and the other two. This is because leaders of these parties have shown capacity to serve the nation better. I find any alliance involving MMD or PF obnonxious as these political parties are dirty with corruption. Any political party that joins hands with MMD or PF carries the baggage of corruption. Especially MMD is finished as they managed to get only 14,587 votes countrywide. This time it shall be worse. I am for UPND forming an alliance with the Zambian people to solve their challenges.
