MINISTER YAMFWA MUKANGA

MINISTER of Works and Supply says Government will next month announce the successful bidder for the Great North Road dual carriageway between Chibombo and Ndola.

Mr Mukanga said in an interview in Lusaka that companies have expressed interest and a team of experts is evaluating the bids.

“Progress has been made, and by March 28, we will announce to the nation who the successful bidder will be, ’he said.

Mr Mukanga also said to ease the movement of people, Government has been looking at how to improve road inter-connectivity.

He said Government has been working on the Nacara corridor to create railway connectivity from Muchinji in Chipata through to Serenje in Central Province. A contractor is currently doing feasibility studies.

“Another connection we are working on is the Rivungu canal to Angola, and the contractor has already done the one-stop border post,” Mr Mukanga said.

Mr Mukanga said Government is also working on the south-to-south corridor and a temporary bridge has been done in Kazungula.

The Jimbe Road that will connect Zambia to Angola through Lubumbashi, is also under construction.
Mr Mukanga said the projects were approved by cabinet recently.

“Zambia is being connected to its neighbours so that through all these connections, people can easily connect with their neighbouring countries,” he said.

Mr Mukanga said the projects will ease the movement of people and goods and services within the country and across the borders.

  1. Even when there is no money and budget for a project the no vision government will cheat the uneducated masses in fake developments. Solwezi road is death trap to most of us going for work from copperbelt. People do not be cheated by these looters and give them a vote on 11th August. Let these *****s in government finish the projects still pending. My people perish because of lack of knowledge. Your vote as it comes in a right manner would be cherished. Don’t vote for this cheating government.

    • @John White, didn’t you hear the explanation by the contractor that they are waiting for the rains to subside before construction of the road can begin? The asphalt plant has already been completed and soon the Solwezi Chingola road will be in good shape.

    • @ Ba Sebenza

And in Ngwerere, contractor No. 4, in three and half years for 97km., has started dismantling asphalt plant and abandoning project. Great success!!!

    • It is just a loophole for boring in order to finance campaigns, PF can never do anything without a hidden agenda, all part of Doche Kubeba.

  2. we are not interested in your shody works. look at what happened in mpulungu we know this is how you steal our money by giving poor quality works.

  3. The Minister has glossed over the question of cost and the source of funding for these roadworks. As welcome as they may sound, are they justified? Do current and projected traffic volumes justify a dual carriage between Ndola and Chibombo? Is the Jimbe Road through Congo to Angola not a waste of money, given the political volatity of our northern neighbour? And by the way has RDA been moved away from State House?

  4. This is Mukanga who held talks with big airlines ( Emirates) and took a team from Zambia. When he came back he promised that Zambia will have a national airline BY JUNE 2014! I will never forget that lie from Mukanga, because he consistently lied for a good of time.

    • Good point. Unfortunately keeping count of PF lies can become a whole career if one is not careful.

  5. It’s probably another Chinese company part funded by their exim bank. ..these empty tins would never get the best contractors as they are too corrupt!!

    • Agree with Jay- Jay it is a Chinese Company. I have always wondered, the road from Kapiri Mposhi to Serenje is very good and i believe it must been rehabilitated at least 15 years ago. This road takes a pounding from hundreds of Trucks every day and yet it has no potholes and is intact. Why cant the government use the same contractor to make the other trunk roads instead of giving these corrupt Chinese fools??

  6. Copy paste from the Daily mail carrying same errors!!This article though bearing good news on development leaves much to be desired. “Dual carriage way between Ndola and Chibombo”- what happens after Chibombo or between Chibombo and Lusaka? “He said Government has been working on the Nacara corridor – we only know of one NacaLa corridor connecting Zambia and Malawi to the port of Nacala in Mozambique and NO NacaRa!! “The Jimbe Road that will connect Zambia to Angola through Lubumbashi, is also under construction”- are you sure people first have to to Lubumbashi (DRC)and then turn back to Zambia via Mwinilunga to go to Angola? How?? This road is a direct connection between Zambia and Angola and has nothing to do with Lubumbashi in DRC!! Please counter check your facts before you publish!!

    • You forgot the real Gem:
“…He said Government has been working on the Nacara corridor to create railway connectivity from Muchinji in Chipata through to Serenje in Central Province. A contractor is currently doing feasibility studies…”

Contractor currently doing feasibility study? WOW!!!

  7. Before any road is built or expanded, they must a serious cost to benefit study by independent experts. Most of these will be white elephants with no tangible benefits to the economy of this country, apart the huge loans which we shall have to pay back for the next couple of generations. Can the Minister give us well researched data to justify & tie these projects to meaningful tangible & sustainable benefits to the Zambian economy. HH always gets insulted when calls this kind of doing things Chipantepante.

    • @Zamani Boza, agreed, we are already struggling with doing a dual carriage between Kitwe and Kasumbalesa where we are just talking of about 150 km. What about the distance between Lusaka and Ndola which is close 400km or slightly above? Such projects while welcome should be be well analysed and compared with other competing priorities!! It would be a good development physically but what will be the cost and benefits? Is the road going to be built with the Private Sector under the PPP arrangement and if so, how long will the private sector players stay as shareholders before they hand over total control to govt? The nation needs some indicators to that effect not this “don’t kubeba” way of announcing big projects!!
