The United Nations (UN) says it is working towards training the Zambia Police Service on how best it should apply the Public Order Act ahead of the August 11, general elections.

ZANIS reports that UN resident coordinator Janet Rogan said there is need for the Police Service and political parties to work together as the country prepares for the general elections in order to ensure elections are held in a nonviolent environment.

Ms. Rogan said the UN is looking at how best the public order act can be implemented and to help promote a better understanding between the Police Service and political parties even before the Act is revised.

The UN resident coordinator was speaking in Solwezi today when she called on the north western province permanent secretary Ephraim Mateyo at his office.

Ms. Rogan is visiting north western province to look at how the UN can support government to change the agricultural patterns in the province in order to attain sustainable agriculture productivity and growth.

Meanwhile, Justice Minister Dr. Ngosa Simbyakula says Government intends to table amendments to the controversial Public Order Act during the current sitting of Parliament.

Dr. Simbyakula says the idea is to ensure that the Act is amended before Parliament is dissolved in May.
He says in line with President Edgar Lungu’s directive, his Ministry is currently carrying out consultations with various stakeholders with the view of coming with possible amendments.

Dr. Simbyakula has disclosed to QTV in an interview that so far his Ministry has received an overwhelming response from stakeholders.

    • Just embarrassing that you can a president who is a lawyer ( albeit and average one) and a supposedly better lawyer in Simbyakula and still have the PoA from 1955 left the British colonialists still in force

    • “Dr. Simbyakula says the idea is to ensure that the Act is amended before Parliament is dissolved in May. He says in line with President Edgar Lungu’s directive, his Ministry is currently carrying out consultations with various stakeholders with the view of coming with possible amendments.”

While the directive is to make it better, the objective should be to obliterate this archaic law from our books. Steps in the right direction but not good enough … the smart people of the Zambian Enterprise deserve a better law in place.

  1. ”Government intends to table amendments to the controversial Public Order Act during the current sitting of Parliament.”.. basakala nyongo

    • After the signature has been appended by the president for the assented amendments by parliament thats when we’ll experience calls for additions and subtractions!

  2. why would the UN wanna train ZP? I mean
it’s not they don’t know how to apply the POA,
they just do it with bias we all know this. Something is off….STAY WOKE PEOPLE.

  3. You can take a donkey to a pond to drink but you can’t force it to drink…Zambias main biggest problem is governance so long as the IG is handpicked by the Head of State ..this will never end even if you train the junior officers!

  4. They will send constables to these workshops. When they come back Charity Katanga & her ilk will still order them to do the opposite.

  5. .teaching a pupil the same things she knows already does not make her an cleverer. The police know what to do they just need to work professionally and this POA can work though it is a useless piece of archaic registration. I wonder who will be the class captain during these night school classes

  6. Has anyone seen the training material at Lilayi? We may all be taking it for granted that the Police are receiving correct training. Anyone who has had a lengthy discussion or interview with the cops will invariably be left wondering whether these guys went far in school. To me, this training by the UN is a must.
