UPND President Hakainde Hichilema says his party will reduce the retirement age from 65 years to 55 once elected in to office.

Mr Hichilema said the people of Zambia have all agreed that the retirement age should be at 55 years and that his party will do exactly that because people would be too tired to run their own business if they wished to do so after their retirement if it remains at 65.

He added that his party will not only reduce the retirement age but that his government will also pay retirees their benefits in time and avoid what has been the norm of retirees dying before getting their packages.

“UPND will reduce the retirement age to 55 that’s what Zambians want, that’s the unions want, that’s what citizens want, you don’t want to retire somebody when they are 65 they are tired. You want to retire somebody when they are 55 so that they can switch from employment to running a business, they will still have energy then we will support them. Give us your vote then we will take this retirement age from 65 to 55, it is commonly agreed in our country.

“When people retire we will pay them their retirement package on time, we will plan and pay them on time these days somebody retires they die before they get their retirement benefits we want to match the two, retirement age and then paying them their benefits,” he said.

  1. Pf govt gave 55, 60, and 65 depending on what a worker wants. Which is which. Your promise hh is already taken care of.

    • Making populist statements is what derails leaders the important thing is to pay retirees on time whether they retire at 55 or 65.
Given that people are lining longer now, shouldn’t we be looking at keeping the proposed 65?
People retire at 55 what do they do start selling salaula or tomatoes? These are the same people who want to go back to work because life becomes unbearable business doesn’t always work for everyone.

    • This is a populist statement. Retirement is personal. Business is not for pensioners, its employment as well. People retire from white/blue collar jobs, sport, business, farming, etc. What’s important is whether one has accrued enough resources to go & sleep, play nsolo, travel, buy a yacht or something. Don’t fall in the trap of pleasing people dear HH.

    • Why should there be three ranges of retirement ages? Everyone above age should retire and create space for new blood. This is important because Effective change management supports a smooth transition from the old to the new while maintaining morale, productivity, and even company image and the country at large.

    • Bufi, ulabeja, wenye. My friend’s father ( headteacher )realy wants to retire. He is now 57. He had gone on leave pending retirement when he reached 55 years.Someone else was brought from another school to replace him. When the retirement age changed, the tired man was called back against his wish. The guy who had been transfered to his school was redirected to another school were he has been reduced to a mare treacher. If you think Iam lying.Go round and ask District board secreataries how many old teachers were called back to work against their wish.

    • Only a fool does not expect death upon been born. So it goes when one gets employed he or she must expect to retire.
Why should one work up to more than 55 years if he or she is responsible enough to prepare for the future? Even if an irresponsible person retires at 70 he will still be a destitute. Why should one fear to retire even after serving for 20 yrs?
Sadly why should a reasonable person receive his retirement package posthumously?
Any way it matters less about long service, what matters is how one prepares for life. Even if an irresponsible person retires at 100 yrs one would still not make it in life. How about youths who are energetic and productive more than those at 60 and above? Don’t they deserve to replace the old and less energetic ones?

    • Yaba!!! Kumwenafye ku cunsu … ta baishiba no kubeya!!! Nga mumapa na pantweno ninshi pa sapa shani???!!! Ati tu lefyaya ukuteka, beyeni first!!!

  2. That is how a president thinks and plans to do for the people he leads. HH you have my vote as a civil servant. Pf came to steal, kill and to destroy Zambia.

  3. Comment:So how many more years do you have Mr HH before you retirement? Its not good for those retiring, they go for contracts after they retire? What does the UPND manifesto say about this ?

    • Good observation, HH should also retire after loosing the August 11 elections because by the time we will have another round of elections in 2021 he will be way above 55 years so he should lead by example.

    • Somebody needs to be educated. HH is an employer.Employers only retire when their children are old enough to continue running their bussinesses. Moreover, the constitution of Zambia has no age limit for presidents. Hope you know how old Sata was when he became president.

  4. If this promise is to be kept, then it’ll be a good move looking at life expectancy in Zambia which is now at 57 (according to World Bank). People can get their hard earned benefits on time.

    • Now i know his hh is use.less. He talks of 55 yrs?? Its already taken care of by Lungu. Early 55, normal 60 & and late 65 yrs. Lungu’s offer is the best ever. Why shud u force us to retire at 55 yrs iwe mambala ?? If u hav nothing to cheat pipo about keep yo beak shut. In august we will retire u. State house is not for every jim and jack. ECL makes sense

  5. Today Zambians cannot be cheated. My family, relatives, friends & myself about 100 votes will be given to you but let me warn you.If you will not sign an SI to reverse this age then will vote you out just aftet one term the way pf will be voted out this year. Stick to your words

    • Ba Philip be realistic, can a police officer man a road block at 65…Guard a bank at 65 or even chase a thief at 65? C an a miner work at 65,A soldier go jogging at 65?

  6. So HH will only work for 2 years as president before retiring? Isn’t he already 54. Practice what you preach men

    • Is there a retirement age for a president? The is two terms of 5 years. Use you head… when we say PF is full of illiterates we mean people like you

  7. Clearly does not understand the demographics in the pension system in Zambia and relate to the unfunded gaps t meet the miss match in retiring age that was filled y the carefully adjusted 65 years fitting neatly into the working life of typical Zambia in bot formal and informal

Once should listen if the issue was on THE SOCIAL SECURITY around the scheme and the administration of those who my need to retire at 45 yrs. before 65 yrs. and still receive a minimum monthly payment

We could have listen also I it to address the social cash transfer for the likely most elderly due to insufficient retirement income

clearly he should be is rely retiring…

  8. Iwe Kachema, you say “When people retire we will pay them their retirement package on time”, please be specific. On time can be one week, One Month, One Year, Three Years, so stop f00ling yourself. Just in case you havent read the new arrangement, a person can opt to retire at 55 years, 60 years or 65 years. PF Government has taken care of the 55 years bwana.
We have told you that as we draw closer and closer to 11 August, HH will be mad. The man has no message and direction. People have challenged UPND to be specific, “What is it that they will specifically do for Zambians in the given time frame? You cant just offer a blank cheque, it doesnt work like that.
Let Kachema say how he will employ the 4 million plus youths of this country and when. Let him say where he will get the…

  9. The Zambian middle class have been saved but the worry rather should be on the application and administration of the pension scheme especially the migration from old The 65yrs is not the problem but the scheme administration Though the indexation formula is also poorly applied since most will retire with little savings as they migrate between formal and informal choosing between early retirement and late will based carefully on income accumulated sufficiently to live on
Then its old and not true to see the pension structure from defined benefit alone We should have listen if he gave the median numbers affecting those pensions amounts and the basis of reversal to 55 yrs…

    • The man just yaps! He has no clue what so ever of how he will miraculously do all these things within a specific period of time, all he is intrested in is plot one.

  10. cont’d
Let Kachema say how he will employ the 4 million plus youths of this country and when. Let him say where he will get the excess water to generate enough electricity and when. Let him say how much a 50 kg bag of maize will be sold to FRA by farmers. Let HH say what the Kwacha against the Dollar will be and when. Let him say how UPND will be able to attract investors without robust infrastructure.
If he can state and give time lines then people may, just consider him in 2026. For now as long as he just yaps, let him forget being at Plot One.

  11. reversal to 55 yrs. or less. and see the cash flow implications matching it to the risks and return in various classed of portfolio of investments NAPSA has on its Investments class
He is clearly misplaced and should revisit his statement again

Clearly not well thought-out PF Case is well thought after only administrative adjustments

  12. HH,,, awe kwena ulimbwa!!!! Ukubosabosa, promise after promise!!!!
We will retire u once and for all this August you have made too much noise kuswe iwe!!!

  13. You people always say that HH needs to address his plans for the nation but when he does, it’s always criticism. Especially PF sympathizers. At least hear the man.

    • Spark Jarrow,

It’s you who has a problem. HH seems not to be addressing his plans for the nation because what he is talking about on retirement age has already been addressed sufficiently by Edgar Chagwa Lungu. In fact this has nothing to do with belonging to FDD, PF, UPND or UNIP as you childishly insinuate. Retirement time must be an individual’s decision. ECL’s way is the best because you decide whether you want to retire at 55, 60, or 65 years. For your own information you can even retire before age 55. Ever heard of early retirement? If you graduate from UNZA at age 22 – as I did – and work continuously for 25 years in an organization for 25 years you can retire at age 47! Get it you ignorant HH – worshipping UPND cadre?

  14. Guys cn we undastand de retiement age.if read collective agreement.it says if retie at 55,it means u ve 2 wait 4 yo pension until u rich 60 and those vat ve failed 2 plan their lives like most of u zambians u will go at 65.plez planning starts de day one is employed.retie at 55 so vat u cn lok afta yo grandchildren,nt wen u ar finished.enjoy day

  15. How is going to reverse when the Trade Unions in Zambia are happy about it and they even made submissions before Guy Scott signed the SI… The problem HH has been talking to wrong people and not those who will be affected…

  16. This is one of the reasons HH cannot make a good president. He is a populist. That is the reason why he will accept every Jim and Jack in the UPND despite their past record. These days young people are beginning their careers late as they take time in higher education. At 55 not many would have saved enough to survive another 30 years in retirement. This policy will only impoverish the older citizens.

  17. HH your aim to rule this country does not border on reversing the retirement age from 65 to 55 years. Its not every Jim and Jack who can run a business successfully. Some people are career workers who have retired without being paid their benefits. its better to let the situation to stabilize with passage of time and not making it a campaign tool. Given the current economic situation in the country where is the money going to come from to pay retirees. Ba HH and UPND stop being excited when you see the masses attending your political rallies, they may deceive you. There are a lot of factors which can draw crowds to an event. These same over aged employees are carrying a lot burdens of looking after their own children some are graduates and grand and great grand children who have failed…

  18. I can see that HH is now getting mad because the issue of retirement age is up to individual to decide currently whether to retire at 50, 55, 60, or 65 years.

He has run out of ideal on what to cheat the Zambian people.

PF and Edger Lungu are already on top of the game try something else baba.
Shame on the tonga tribalist + a Satanist.
    LOI

  19. This is the reason i will not vote for this Kanchema. He will inconvenience my parents who have already decided to retire at 60 years.I am still doing my degree and when my father is retired by UPND,there will be no one to continue paying for me.This guy will take this country in reverse….watch out Zambians.

  20. Another empty promise, first of all life expectancy in Zambia is 40 years last time the report was compiled, so how do you retire some one at 55 just 15 years above his or her life expectancy when in fact in Zambia most people get into formal employment in their early or mid 30’s if at all they can find a job? Secondary not every Zambian can do business i mean real business and not utumtemba. We are gifted differently, if you have succeeded well in business doesn’t mean that even me or every Zambian will succeed in business especially after they retire at the age of 55. Bwana HH on this one i differ with you completely, i think 65 years is more reasonable to retire.

  21. Jobs are not created by retirees. You cant force a 55 year old into retirement. She is very young and the employer has a lot to gain from keeping her in employment. Iam UPND but over the retirement age I say NO! Keep it at 65.

  22. In terms of paying on time when some one retires, the current amended constitution has taken care of that. if a person is not paid on his last day of retirement, the company is obliged to be paying him/her a monthly salary until the retirement package is paid

    • Evidently HH has not read that provision of the current amended constitution you are referring to. And this is the guy who wants to be our Republican President and who our UPND uncritically support!

    • Evidently HH has not read that provision of the current amended constitution you are referring to. And this is the guy who wants to be our Republican President and who our UPND friends uncritically support!

  23. Abena Kamwenfu should try to trim his beard and hair. he looks quite scruffy for a veep. At least Ichilema is used since most of the times he is playing with cattle. What a sad day it would be, to be on the same bus with cows going for work, eish

  24. IN MY PERSONAL OPINION……

ALL those that belong to ISIS are DOGS
ALL those that fight for and support Boko Haram are DOGS
ALL those that support HH are DULL
ALL those that support GBM are downright WHATEVER….
    YES, MY PERSONAL OPINION

  25. We have a big problem in Zambia.Instead of building on what others have built,we tend to destroy even the best ideas which are incubated by our friends.Kaunda left a greater infrastructure,in terms of economic foundation, but it was destroyed by greedy politicians.HH when he comes in power,if at he will, should not abolish everything that PF has built. He should build on the good thing that PF has built. We need continuity with change. We made a mistake in 1991 to do away with whatever KK did.We demonised all the good thing that Kaunda did hence the abyss of suffering we put ourselves in.

  26. I was a staunch supporter of UPND until today that i read about what this man wants to do if elected.Automatically,on this premise i will support PF who have given options when it comes to retirement age.HH is actually decampaigning himself and i feel sorry for the guy.I think his campaign manager is fake and does not understand politics.

  27. You PF dunder heads read the constitution and collective agreaments very well. What HH is saying is 55yrs you retire and get your dues in time.PF is saying you can retire at 55yrs but wont get a full package till 60yrs in same cases 65yrs.Its better to get a lump some at start business than get your ka salary till you die.VIVA HH we youths want Jobs.Abakote baletu poka sana a magelo because we have no jobs.

  28. HH is ok but must make it between 55 and 60 years.
Yes with a full or half package followed by monthly installments.
We are ready for one who will meet our demands.

  29. Is he going to sell all his animals to raise money and be able to pay every one who is 55 yrs ? Running a country and milking animals at a personal farm are two different things.UPND leader has never been even a cousellor and he does not understand how govt works. He is just day dreaming.Vote for UPND at your own risk.

  30. HH must know that union leaders are liars and will always mislead him about needs of workers.
He directly consult serving civil servants about the retirement age.
So far Lungu’s offer is the best.
HH must stop the 55 yrs age limit because it is against serving civil servants.
Workers want an option between 55 and 60 years to retire.
This is what hh should support.

  31. HH is offside again again and again. Look here Mr HH we the workers DO NOT WANT TO RETIRE AT 55. By the way you just yap yap yap and yap, your empty false populist and s.illy promises are not even backed by the UPND manifesto. Now we just have si.lly promises now known as “HH Manifesto”.

  32. HH manifesto: I will reinstate the retrenched miners.
HH manifesto: I will stop load shedding
Etc etc please give us more to de campaign you.

  33. We told you that HH does not have better plans for this country. sata told us what he would do for Zambia besides what he did in Lusaka. look at Paul Moonga (2016) the President’s salary is a very tiny proportion of the huge amount of money the UPND leader collected after presiding over a highly suspicious privatisation process of the mining companies in Zambia in the 1990s. Mr Hichilema recommended to the previous government to sell the mines at a song and collected huge sums of money for his personal use and walked away

  34. Spark Jarrow,

35. This f**l is under five a lot of miscalculations.
New retirement is the best in the world very flexible if one is tired you go at 55,if you feel u should continue upto 65.
Remember 55 retirement was making many children not to finish school, college bcoz by the time someone is in grade 12 the parents are retired.these are some of them who are rioting at unza, street kids etc.
Here dont just look at the worker, look at children well fair.
When govt said 65 retirement even those who retired a year ago came back wanting to be back.
So here hh you have lost many voters to lungu tongas inclusive they now know once this man comes i ll stop work,my children will stop school.
Workers vote lungu epali ubwali pali hh alefwaya ukufumya abantu inchito akengishe aba tonga banakwe shame we know…

  36. My only bapongoshi ba HH ! which pipo have agreed because i have not agreed to 55 years .Remember life beginds at 40 years. some people get sharper with increased age. So revisit your thinking otherwise ECL will get it again. imagine

  37. am very worried with such loose thinking.are you sure you will have the money to pay all retirees or begin to insult retirees. Don’t ride on retirees perceived ignorance. These are your parents, especially for you who still need the biggest and most lucrative Zambian job of plot 1

  38. I give credit to the PF lying machine which goes in overdrive when threatened.

ELungu campaign promise on the retirement.age that had been signed by G Scott was unequivocal. Reverse it as it had not been cleared by cabinet. Remember?

The insidious ruin in the hodgepodge Lungu~PF retirement scheme is.it’s denial of.youth entry into the job market.

That is.what people should be addressing. Youth unemployment.
