ECZ sets dates for processing presidential supporters

The Electoral Commission of Zambia has announced Monday 23rd to Friday 27th May 2016 as the date for processing of supporters for all Presidential candidates wishing to contest the 2016 general elections.

The Commission has since appealed to all aspiring Presidential candidates to directly contact District Electoral Officers in all provincial centers to arrange for the date and time for processing of their 100 supporters at the designated nomination centers in each province.

ECZ Public Relations Manager Crispin Akufuna told ZANIS in a statement that all aspiring candidates are supposed to ensure that pre-processing of the supporters is done during the stipulated period.

Mr. Akufuna said all candidates will be expected to provide proof of payment of the minimum 50% of the nomination fees and reminded the aspiring candidates who have made part payments to submit in writing to the commission the dates and time on which they intend to file their nomination papers with the Returning Officer in Lusaka from 30th May to 3rd June 2016.

He stated that the official receipt for the payment of nomination fees should be obtained from the ECZ Finance department adding that any balance should be paid in full before filing in of nomination papers.

The commission has also advised aspiring candidates to submit their campaign timetables to the ECZ and the Zambia police.

Mr. Akufuna further disclosed that nomination papers for the National Assembly, Mayoral and Councilor elections can be collected from the District Electoral Officers or Town Clerks from Tuesday, 26th May 2016.

Zambia will hold its general elections on the 11th of August this year and political parties have since been officially allowed by the electoral commission of Zambia to commence political campaigns.

And The Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ- will on Thursday meet presidential candidates taking part in the August 11, general election.

ECZ Public Relations Manager Cris Akufuna says the commission wants to update the political party leaders, civil society organisations and the church on progress made in the preparations for the general election.

Mr. Akufuna says those invited by the commission are political party presidents, their chairpersons for elections and secretary generals.

He told ZNBC news on the sidelines of the ECZ Trainers of Trainers media workshop today that the meeting will be held at Mika Convention Centre in Chongwe District at 09:00 hours.
