At a time when a lot of Zambian artists would rather make quick money by singing campaign songs, sensational singer and performer Drimz has released the highly anticipated music video to his single Umutende.
Asked why music is the ideal tool for reaching out to people during this time of campaigns, Drimz says he believes music is not only for entertainment but a tool for as well. “Music plays a huge role in the behavior of someone and I feel we as artists need to be wary of the type lyrics we expose our listeners to.” He says.

He says a lot of youths are music driven so it’s important to reach them in their comfort zone. “The youths today have a good ear for music than speeches sorry to say this, I think over 90 percent of us youths would spend more time listening to music, watching music videos than actually listening to the news or someone giving a speech so it’s for this reason that we need to put positive energy in our music so as to inspire a great future for our societies and the nation at large.”

The singer also recently took part in the Triple V peace concert organised by The Young Women in Action which was held in Lusaka at OYDC on 5th June. “Just recently I had the blessing of being a part of the Triple V peace concert which aims at reaching out to people to encourage youths to vote and participate in civic matters and also to stay away from political violence.” He says.

Meanwhile Drimz has clarified why he does not sign campaign songs for politicians, citing personal conviction over profit. “Firstly this is my opinion and I respect my fellow colleagues that have gone that route of doing songs for politicians to help in their campaign. They have a right to but me I decided to take a neutral stance because I feel mixing politics and music would divide my fan base.”

He says he is a registered voter who cannot wait to cast his vote when the time comes. “I will exercise my right and vote for my candidate of choice but as far as music is concerned, it is… a business quite alright but you need to study your market and be very cautious with some decisions that you make. Quite alright you would make money with doing political songs but for how long will it sustain you and your career?”

He says mixing music and politics is tricky and often leads to artists being misunderstood. “Very few people would understand to say musicians are just hired to offer a service but they end up being labelled as cadres and hence some sections of society would even go to the extent of not supporting that artist’s music and it means their career is threatened even before someone reaches their peak.” He says.

  1. THE LYRICS OF THE MUSIC IS SPOT-ON. THE LACK OF PLAYED (REAL) INSTRUMENTATION HAS COMPLETELY RUBBISHED THE ENTIRE PRODUCT. BAICE MUSALAPUKE MUSBE SERIOUS SANA NA MUSIC. AYA AMA RUBBISH MWITA MUSIC JUST DISQUALIFIES ZAMBIA FROM BEING A MUSICAL COUNTRY. I WOULD RATHER LISTEN TO TRADITIONAL AND GOSPEL MUSIC.
