Late President FTJ Chiluba must be honoured – Gen Miyanda

The Daily National reports that failure by successive governments to recognize the second republican president Dr Fredrick Chiluba’s legacy of democracy, free market economy and declaring the nation as a Christian nation has disappointed former vice president Brigadier Geoffrey Miyanda and Dr Chiluba’s friends.

Speaking to Sunday Nation yesterday after Dr Chiluba’s fifth memorial at the Embassy Memorial Park, Gen Miyanda and Dr Chiluba’s friends observed that Dr Chiluba remained the only former head of State not to have been honored by successive governments.

Gen Miyanda said the Zambia was a Christian nation and a democratic country because of Dr Chiluba.
Gen Miyanda and Dr Chiluba’s wife Regina led family and friends of Zambia’s second republican president Dr Chiluba in paying their respect by laying wreaths at his mausoleum to mark five years of his death at the Embassy Memorial Park opposite Cabinet office.

Other who laid wreaths included his former press aide Mr Richard Sakala, deputy press aide Mr Bevin Ndovi, his personal physician Dr Justine Kabwe, former Access director Mr Fustin Kabwe, nieces and children of Dr Chiluba.

Meanwhile, Mrs Chiluba broke in tears after laying her wreath before Mrs Miyanda’s wife comforted her together with her two daughters Malama and Bwalya.

Gen Miyanda said his family and that of Dr Chiluba had continued enjoying the friendship that had always been in existence even before he served as republican vice president under Dr Chiluba’s administration.

And speaking later Brigadier General Miyanda expressed disappointment that the second republican president has never been honoured despite being the pioneer of multiparty democracy and free market economy.

“I am here with my wife to symbolize the friendship that existed and still exist between my family and late president Chiluba’s family,” he said.

And Mr Ndovi said Dr Chiluba joined politics not because he wanted to enrich himself but because he loved to serve the people.

“Dr Chiluba decided to join politics because he was troubled seeing pregnant women in long queues trying to buy cooking oil,” he said.

Mr Ndovi said when Dr Chiluba was driven by the desire to economically liberate Zambians from the economic hardships which they were going through.

Meanwhile, Mrs Regina Chiluba’s daughter, Malama said it felt like yesterday when her father died.
“Sometimes I feel like my Dad can just walk in from any door in the House but he is not here anymore. I really miss him,” Malama said.

    • @bootyful, I agree. All was great about Chiluba until Mwanawasa read that list 200 accusations of theft. They even confiscated his Institute of Democracy.
      Chiluba more than Zambian presidents.

    • I was very young when Ba Chiluba came on the scene. I wasnt even eligible to vote but through seeing him on TV with my dad, Chiluba was a great orator and a charmer. The man had charisma and character and could work a crowd not these HH characters who have no character nor crowd command and cold as death. I would say the same for Sata. Sata was a very funny man and as such people gravitated towards him. Same story with Trump; the man is funny and hence people gravitate towards him.
My point is warm beats cold any day. When HH learns to crack a joke or dance freely and act like a man you can have a beer with rather than one who will castigate you for having one, he will never be president!

    • politics must be about serving the majority of our people most of whom live in abject poverty. You need to seriously ask yourself who the MMD government served when you consider how many people lost their jobs and lives due to the hardships endured most of those leaders shared the closed and privatised companies . I have respect for most UNIP leaders those are the ones to be honoured!
Yes democracy is good but people don’t eat domocracy. Democracy can only flourish when peoples lives are uplifted .

    • Yes Miyanda, we WISH TO REMEMBER HIM AS A THIEF!!!! IT IS THE ONLY REASON WE SHOULD REMEMBER HIM, so as to LEARN NOT TO STEAL FROM STATE COFFERS FOR ONE’S SELFISH GREED!!

Vote Wisely 11/8/2016!! Vote ZAMBIA FORWARD!! VOTE UPND!!
      Abantu baya!!

      #chagwamustfall!! #pamaFikuyabebele!!

      I thank you!!

    • No way!! It is because of him why white collar thieves like Hikainde are rich. Him and Hakainde sold companies to their mafia friends for a song in return for either a cut or shares in the same companies. Chiluba`s name must be deleted from history.

    • Its the post news paper that tagged Dr Chiluba has a thief because he refused to do what they wanted. Its good to speak with facts. Go to Auditor General reports even from their website and check under which government was heavy corruption since independence. It is under Levy Mwanawasa not Kaunda, not Chiluba not even RB. The heaviest loss of money this country has ever had was under Mwanawasa. Britain was involved in painting Chiluba a thief simply because he refused to sell them ZCCM as a unit. Infact the london judgement failed to find evidence of Chiluba’s alleged theft by the Post instead they judged him on grounds of fiduciary duties. Which means that he should have stopped all criminals in his government including civil servants who steal from GRZ.

    • GENERAL MIYANDA: WHERE DO YOU PLACE ARTHUR WINA? HE IS THE ONE WHO SPEAR HEADED THE CAMPAIGN. AT HARVEST TIME CHILUBA, IN HIS TYPICAL MANNER, DRIBBLED ARTHUR WINA. HE CALLED HIM NAMES.

    • Kaluba started well in 1991. But with the help of people like HH, he betrayed the people of Zambia. Chiluba had looted the treasury big time through his matrix of theft – assisted by the likes of Katele kalumba, Edith Nawakwi, Aron Chungu etc. on one hand and trough privatization and the oil saga on the other through the likes of HH, Valentine Chitalu, Dennis Mumba, Francis Kaunda etc. Therefore, such a criminal does not deserve national honours. Is this what Ba Miyanda is telling us. KK could have been a dictator but, to our knowledge, he did not steel from the people of Zambia.

    • This is why I say Gen Miyanda is not as sharp as we are made to believe. First, the pioneers of democracy are not FTJ, but Akashambatwa, Chitala, Sichinga, and those who sought for signatures to replace KK. FTJ was appointed as leader of the MMD at the Garden Motel when the founders grew cold feet. It does not make him a pioneer. AKA is the one who should be honored if anything. FTJ like Miyanda marginalized the founders and became an authoritarian leader. He sold companies and houses and pocketed the money during the period in which Miyanda was his vice. Miyanda himself must never think he was a founder. He gate-crushed and went after KK full throttle. FTJ should not be honored in any way. Not now, not ever and Miyanda must remain the failure he is.

    • With or without mistakes, Chiluba was a great man, a great leader who contributed greatly to the current status of our nation.
The lives of many Zambians today are uplifted because of Chiluba.
Because of ungrateful hearts many don’t accept.
Mwanawasa who painted the man, a thief was a layer (SC), but failed to prove the allegations against the man who single-handedly put him in state-house.
In the name of letting the man (Chiluba) clear his name, Mwanawasa persecuted Chiluba for 7 years, and am sure if he lived on, he would have continued with that persecution. Thanks to RB who called for sanity to have the matter concluded.
If anyone is reasonable, according to Mwanawasa, Chiluba cleared his name as there was not conviction secured in 7 years driven by a layer of layers.
      Mindsets…

    • @Bootyful. I would rather quote Shakespeare who wrote some 400 year ago, The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones. It was true then as it is now. Thousands of people bought council and parastatal houses at give away prices. That has been interred with his bones.

    • KATONDO BOYS, MEDIA PRO, AND NUBIAN PRINCESS, YOU ARE SPEAKING LIKE THIS BECAUSE OF DR. FTJ CHILUBA. REMEMBER DURING KK YOU WOULD BE HISTORY BY NOW. SURELY YOUR INSULT WILL NOT TAKE YOU ANY WHERE.

  1. I have always thinking of that if only I had a big voice to be heard I can try to preach to people for them to know what chiluba has done for us we enjoy democracy because of him people think and appriciate

    • IT IS THE PEOPLE THAT MADE DEMOCRACY COME TO ZAMBIA, FTJ just happened to be IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME!!! IT IS OUR VOTES THAT USHERED IN DEMOCRACY IN ZAMBIA – FTJ COULD NEVER HAVE MADE IT WERE IT NOT FOR MY VOTE & YOUR VOTES!!!! HE THEN WENT ON TO ABUSE OUR TRUST & HONOUR Just LIKE CHAKOLWA OF TODAY – WE SHOULD LEARN FROM THESE TWO NIGHTMARES!!!

Vote WISELY 11/8/2016!! VOTE ZAMBIA FORWARD!! VOTE UPND!! Abantu Baya!!

      #Chagwamustfall!! #PamaFikuyabebele!!

      I thank you!!

  2. Chiluba must be remembered in the same breath as Idi Amini, Sani Abacha, Emperor Bokasa, Mobutu….and Imelda Marcos’ famous collection of 3,000 of shoes

    • Just because M’Membe said it. Yes the might M’Membe proved beyond any shadow of doubt that Chiluba was supposed to be hanged at Mukobeko. Zambians wake up! Sometimes put yourself in someone’s shoes & ask what if people connived to send me to prison. The pen is mightier than a sword

  3. Give him honor for what? Stealing or political dribbling. True in Zambia no one wants to talk about that man, when Mwanawasa told the nation about what Ftj and his friends did, that was it for any person with brains, those that were plundering with hin like Miyanda, shansonga, chungu are free to honor him any time. Dont make us honor thieves. The honor among thieves.

    • What about the other accounting firms which valued the government assets such as Delloites,Price Water House(George Sokoto),Ernst and Young? You only pick out HH because he joined politics.Remember the team which exposed the Chiluba Zamtrop Matrix mostly consisted of Grant Thornton partners.

  4. This notion that Zambia is a democracy because of Chiluba is wrong. It was a movement together with the majority of Zambians at the time who ganged up against KK’s one party state. The people of Zambia wanted democracy, they rioted, some lost their lives. It’s people power. Mean Chiluba failed in his third term bid.

  5. a lot of kids today even adults kids who are suffering as a result of the way he hypocritically ruined the economy should be honored, when are u going to learn to call a spade a spade – that’s the spade no doubt about it,

  6. Ba Miyanda has a big heart! I remember how he was fired as VP and left outside lusaka by his aides only to be given a lift to lusaka but he has such words for FTJ!

  7. Remembered for what? Declaring Zambia a Christian nation…really laughable..when are we going to stop this mental slavery?

  8. Chiluba was not the pioneer of milt-party , both Miyanda and Chiluba did not attend the Garden House Hotel Meeting which where MMD was formed. They were just chances rs. Looking at the list of the people who attended this so called memorial ceremony, they are all beneficiaries of the corruption of Chiluba , who does not know about Richard Sakala’s corruption, Regin Chiluba. Miyanda himself remained silent when over corruption and undemocratic activities by MMD. His voice against Chiluba was only heard when Chiluba decided to go for third term which shuttered Miyanda’s ambition to succeed Chiluba as President.

Ba Miyanda, a man of God that you claim to , you must stop telling lies

  9. Chiluba was never convicted of any crime. He was found culpable in a civil case in a London High Court in which he never defended himself. Chiluba’s judge and jury was M’membe and his Post. In the eyes of men, Chiluba may not be honoured by mortals, but surely the man stands tall in His Lord and Saviour before the majesty on high. If he is honoured there with ‘Well done good and faithful servant,’ it does not matter what the world says.

    • @ the saint

What about conviction by the High Court of England? What about successive presidents (RB, Sata and ECL) refusing to registered judgement and thus depriving Zambian People of 46 million dollars stolen by thieving dwarf?

“I saw some of the clothing at court. The expenditure with Basile amounts to $1,029,400 of which Basile attributed 99% to FJT. The items seized by the Task Force were considerable. First there were 349 shirts. A large number of these bore the FJT monogram on them and they were from virtually every designer outlet. Second there were 206 jackets and suits. A large number of these were from Basile bearing the FJT monogram. Third there were 72 pairs of shoes. A large number of these were hand made by Basile with the FJT logo. All were for FJT’s unique personal specification (high heels). Many of them were in their original shoe covers and had not been used. There were a large number of other items. The full list can be found in bundle 17…

  10. FTJ was just a crook who does not deserve any recognition beyond that of being the second president of Zambia. How do you honor a leader who brought corruption and deceiving people from all walks of life. Let us forget about FTJ. Yes we all admired him as young people, but having learnt the things he did and mismanaged the country to suit himself and his friends. I shudder to think someone even consider honoring him. Well Miyanda and his friends should honor him not the country.

  11. We bury these former Presidents in these indoor glassed burial tombs for what? Whats wrong with a mere tomb stone? Even in death they are costing the taxpayer…one Frederick Titus Chiluba was one of the most corrupt leaders we have ever had and a morally corrupt individual. The worst part about these greedy leaders is the steal and deposit their money in proxy Swiss accounts when they pass foreign banks benefit.

    • The ones foolish are the ones who made decisions to bury former Presidents in such a manner. When I become President, and I die, please just cremet my body and sprinkle ash at my farm. That is, the dead do not come back. The bible says let the dead bury themselves. This means the dead are not a priority in our lives. Why then should wise men of Zambia spend billions of Kwacha on the dead and yet millions go hungry? We are a sick nation!!! period.

Only Dr. KK deserves that kind of burial not anyone else please

  12. We must also Honour and remember
    *Edward Shamwana
    *Baldwin Nkumbula
    *Ronald Penza
    *Paul Tembo
    *Richard Ngenda
    *Wezi Kaunda
    *Cuthbert Nguni
Brutally murdered when FTJ was at the helm
    MTSRIP

  13. My Respect to FTJ who ushered in the true multiparty democracy. The democracy he ushered in is risk of being lost by dictatorial tendencies in the PF. MHSRIP

  14. FTJ started fine but when he and HH sold off our mines, all that love we had for him left. We are now faced with the possibility of one of FTJ’s High Priest of Corruption and self enrichment is knocking on the door of our Country’s Presidency. Im not saying Edgar Lungu is the best we’ve had BUT i know HH would be the worst ! Aleisa aleisa to sell off this country AGAIN !

    • STOP CHEATING YOURSELF AND OTHERS.Grant Thorton was only involved in the valuation of RAMCOZ assets.
Konkola Mine(the biggest asset) now KCM,Nkana Mine now Mopani ,Mufulira Mine ,Chambeshi etc were handled by other accounting firms such as Delloite,Price Water House Coopers etc.

  15. BA Miyanda naemwe sure. All zambians ve no respect fo kafupi bcoz of his thievery. Open criminal! Mayb u r grateful bcoz he build u to VP. But the same chap (thru sata) dribbled u when u were the obvious guy to take ova mmd. B4 tembo oso dribbled u with the 22 of yo colleagues. So u can say whateva, but not matter what whitewash u put on Chiluba, he wil never b respected by zambians. Criminals dont get respect in Z. Look at hh struggling, just bcoz of similar crime.

  16. … Meanwhile, Mrs Regina Chiluba’s daughter, Malama said it felt like yesterday when her father died.
“Sometimes I feel like my Dad can just walk in from any door in the House but he is not here anymore. I really miss him,” Malama said …

Since when did Malama’s father die? As far as I know, Mr. Mwanza, still lives and possibly in Ndola. Regina has probably known now that many times self respect and dignity are far more important than the lure of easy wealth.

  17. Chiluba Kafupi put Zambia on the world map for good. Lungu in the history of Zambia has put Zambia on world map as a violet nation where elections might be cancelled according to CCTV news that I head today. who is better, Kafupi or Chagwa? Chagwa has also stolen a lot from Zambians and you are supporting this thief who has brought shame on Zambia because of his violence.

  18. The only popular leader in Zambia with 78% vote. No one will achieve that and none has served 2 Full 5 yr terms. He brought Zambia from the garbage dump to recovery, but job losses were inevitqble. He took the tough decisions which the current pretenders to the presidency cant fathom.

He will remain the greatest and his legacy will be intact. Three quarters of urban dwellers live in houses sold to them at subprime price by the state under FJT.

    • Extract from London High Court Judgement

  19. He is the only popular leader with 78% vote. His legacy lives on through the massive citizens home empowerment. 75% of urban dwellers live in sold institutional houses. We know Zambians dont say ‘ thankyou’.

  20. I remember one ex-miner’s wife who died without getting her late husband’s benefits because one FTJ purported to have moved their benefits from a Mukuba account in Kitwe to an account in Lusaka where miners benefits would be deposited for their families…. This never happened because the monies were siphoned off! Iyi yeve mwataya ba General!

  21. I DON’T AGREE WITH GENERAL MIYANDA. THE PERSON WHO SHOULD BE HONOURED FOR SPEAR HEADING THE RETURN TO DEMOCRACY POLITICS IS NOT CHILUBA. ARTHUR WINA SHOULD BE THE ONE TO BE HONOURED. EVEN LAST YEAR I SAID IT. CHILUBA WAS A BENEICIARY. HE DRIBBLED ARTHUR WINA. MIYANDA WAS NOT IN THE GROUP THAT SPEAR HEADED THE STRUGGLE. HE WAS ACTUALLY BROUGHT IN AT THE LAST MINUTE TO STOP THE UNIONISTS FROM DOMINATING THE MOVEMENT: CHILUBA, SAMPA AND ZIMBA. CHILUBA ACTUALLY WANTED ZIMBA TO NATIONAL SECRETARY. MIYANDA HAD ALREADY FORMED HIS OWN POLITICAL PARTY WHEN HE WAS PERSUADED TO ABADON IT TO STAND AS NATIONAL SECRETARY AT THE CONVENTION THAT WAS HELD AT MULUNGUSHI CONFERENCE CENTRE. LET HIM DENY THIS. I WAS THERE.

  22. Why does Imelda Marcos come to my mind whenever this name is mentioned? I just can’t figure it out….

  23. Gen. Miyanda, are still the Christian you claimed to be some years back? If so, how could you call for honoring a Congolese plunderer and wife snatcher? OK, I get it, it is because you chewed with him….he appointed you minister without portfolio, minister of education and others…

  24. For an intelligent man Gen Miyanda really does disappoint sometimes. Honour a criminal? I wonder what the families of people like Paul Tembo feel when such silly statements are uttered.

  25. Very typical of Miyanda. Speaking from without…no analysis at all. Chiluba, together with Regina, were and should still be considered plunderers of Zambia’s economy. Just because Angela and Regina are friends does not give you powers to tell us to honour a thief.

  26. If Miyanda wants to honor a stinking thief let him proceed alone and leave the country out of his misconceived charade. Besides, declaration of Zambia as a Christian nation has made us a wholly laughing stock because not a single country in this world is a so called Christian nation. He used this as a facade to plunder the country of its resources and husbands of their wives. As for introducing democracy, Miyanda is lying, it was Aka and his friend Chitala wo introduced democracy to Zambia when Miyanda himself was still in Rev Mumphashya’s NADA. To date, Zambians have not been able to enforce the London judgement against Chiluba because of scum of the world like Rupiah Banda. Anyway, one day, we shall get even with all these thieves and menaces to society alike!

  27. Of course Miyanda was plucked out of NADA by Aka Lewanika and made the MMD SG. But “bu pukucwe munyelela siliba bwa Miyanda”, he is one of the first to hound Aka out of the MMD thinking the oil of annointment will land on his afro gurumuthu but alas as fate will have it, it landed on the head of a slumbering Levy Ichibumba in Jesmondine. You should have seen Miyanda that day, he almost explonded because having taken his gurumuthu so close to Chiluba and filled all spaces with it only for it to miss and alnd elsewhere, awe sure it was agony.

  28. What makes a hero? Name recognition or the legends that follow a deed? Zambia has many unsung heroes who have worked, sacrificed and achieved without anyone championing their cause or acknowledging their existence. Unfortunately, very few of our politicians are deserving of preservation through history. Sometimes they even write their own books with revisionist history to play heroes. RIP FJT. Your deeds remain known. Good and bad. Not my hero.

  29. Chiluba and HH messed up the employees of RAMCOZ big times. Wwe don’t need to honour Chiluba and neither do we need to vote for HH. Get me clearly, HH will not be ushered in the until he apologises to the ex-Ramcoz employees who have been left in total poverty.
May the soul of Chiluba rest in total confusion

  30. It is a fallacy to think that Chiluba brought democracy.Democracy was brought by the Zambian people who wanted to do away with a dictatorial regime. The only thing that Chiluba brought was corruption which made a lot of people to acquire wealth dubiously. He is a driver who drove our country in potholes of corruption and negative vices.Miyanda, should also keep quiet because he lucks substance in whatever he says.He failed to criticise the brutal regime of Chiluba.

  31. Anyway this is democracy each one has their own opinion. We seem to have forgotten fast how we used to wear sofia (plastic shoes) lining up for commodities whilst being whipped by vigilantes, even this bread was a rear commodity I remember rushing after Supa loaf truck so that you buy before it runs out and we were forced to buy buns (only get a loaf if you buy 2 buns as well). Ladies in crimpling dresses and in January we used to line up for uniforms at Busaka and Stran Tailors, and we used to line up for an ugly Bata shoe. This rice was only seen on Christmas apples and coca cola only if your father is a politician, these were only found in duty free shops were you can’t even get past the front door it was a dollar shop only the elite would enter, (never saw a dollar only on tv or news…

  32. WHY SHOULD WE HONOR HIM FOR ?FOR SELLING OUR MINES AND OTHER COMPANIES HE LEFT US IN THIS MESS ……..

  33. #The Real Olivia Pope- I do not know how HH comes into this picture. You mean you cannot sleep without meditating on HH? You cannot think of anything else? HH is different my friend; entertaining people through a sweet deceptive tongue never brings food on the table. Mwanawasa hardly joked or danced…had a still serious face. Look at how he worked hard to produce integrity in government; something that made us proud citizens. That is how we miss it in Zambia; we judge people according to how flexible and compromising they are to our corruption and not their ability to deliver. What does dancing have to do with the value of the Kwacha?
