David Cameron has resigned as prime minister after Britain voted to leave the European Union.

The prime minister, who backed a Remain vote, said Britain required “fresh leadership” to negotiate the country’s exit from the EU.

“I do not think it would be right for me to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination,” he said in a statement outside Downing Street.

He promised to “steady the ship” over the coming months before stepping down in October.

Mr Cameron, flanked by his wife Samantha, said the result was the “will of the British people” which was an “instruction which must be delivered”.

Close to tears and with his voice breaking, Mr Cameron said: “I love this country and I feel honoured to have served it and I will do everything I can in future to help this great country succeed.”

The referendum, called by Mr Cameron, delivered a shock victory for the Leave campaign.

The Brexit vote immediately sent the pound tumbling and sparked calls for his resignation.

Boris Johnson is the early favourite to replace Mr Cameron.

  1. white pipo life is simple unlike Africans who would want to be leadership forever the likes of mugabe, kabila,mu7,santos & ichilema in upnd who Zambian pipo have rejected 4 times but has no morals to resign be like David congrats sir.

    • This is civilisation. That is why white people develop nations. We are just there to fight amongst ourselves and destroy the little the white man does for us. For us it is mpaka I will rule them, with or without a vision, with or without skills, clueless or not, I will sit on their heads and they will feel my weight. No wonder we hear of leaders crushing others like a tonne of bricks, leaders praising themselves for carrying big sticks that has fell on the Post Newspaper. Result is no development.

    • The entire world is in confusion, man can not sort out this confusion:be it Obama, Cameron, EL or HH.
It is only God who has the power to finish all our problems. May God keep on blessing Zambia.

    • @Jazz
Ala wandepula iwe mambala ati ‘mpaka I will rule them, with or without a vision, with or without skills, clueless or not, I will sit on their heads and they will feel my weight’.

    • People should not mislead themsleves…This is Britain. If you understand History, then you know what I am talking about here…Nothing is gonna affect its economy other than the temporal exit news which plunged market confidence…this is temporal as its market is integrated with the rest of europe who are trying have witheld cash in readiness for the next move…Britain still has the Commonwealth and and can access raw materials cheaply…A British is always a British

    • LET LUNGU RESIGN TOO. LUNGU STOP BEHAVING LIKE A TICK, ALWAYS CLINGING ON EVEN WHEN YOU ARE UNWANTED BY THE ZAMBIAN PEOPLE. RESIGN!

    • That’s what happens in real countries. Not sontaling where you have marauded through kickbacks and backhanders and claiming that you are a success. Zambia is a failed state.

    • @Rainman: You are an embarrassment. Nobody cares for the Commonwealth, other than third world scroungers like you. The Commonwealth gives no advantage, such as visa waivers and employment, to former British colonies. Raw materials are available to whoever has the money. And raw materials are neither cheap nor expensive – they are always sold at market prices. Britain, like any country, can buy whatever they want and wherever they want it, as long as they have the money.

    • @1.4 HAS SUMMARISED IT ALL. DON’T COMPARE BRITAIN TO ZAMBIA. IN FACT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY DIFFICULT IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE FOR DAVID CAMERON TO GOVERN HAD HE DECIDED TO REMAIN PRIME MINISTER. HERE IN SUCH REFERENDUMS, IT MEANS PEOPLE HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN YOU. AND THEREFORE, THEY HAVE REJECTED YOU. BE REMINDED THAT THE DOWN FALL OF CAMERON OR TONY BLAIR (THOUGH WITH A SLIGHT DIFFERENCE) MASSIVELY, IMMIGRATION. ADDITIONALLY, TONY’S VERDICT WAS HIS INVOLVEMENT IN THE UN PROVOKED IRAQ WAR WHEN HE JUST LIED TO THE BRITISH PEOPLE OF, “WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION” AND JUST BEING A POODLE TO USA.

    • you will never understand africa if you dont read why africa became to be what it is now. And if you dont read the history, you will always look at africa with scorn as you compare it to Britain. We wont get out of our situation until we know what caused the problem. It might be interesting for some of you to realise that the problem of africa is the very same countries we look up to like braitain, france and other europeans.

    • African countries should also vote to leave the commonwealth. Let us leave these blood suckers by themselves. Knowing the pressure they will get from the rest of europe, they will use african resources to even out the economic turmoil in this period as they have always used the african continent. but this time, we say no. we are not selling our gold, diamonds, tungsteen, copper, uranium or whatever else they need. we are keeping our resources for our own use in the future when we shall need themm to push our industrial development barriers.
Africans want out of the commonwealth. The only wealth that is common in commonwealth is that we are britains property as africa.

    • Here is proof right in your face when i say the british are the most racist people. they have not changed. The real reason why they wanted out was because of the inclusion of what they thought were foreigners to the EU like turkey and those southern EU states which they consider not to be white. Then the wave of immigrants(arabs) from north africa and syria etc all fleeing into europe scares them. so they opted to close their borders but couldnt since they were in the EU and thats why they opted out to avoid reparcations from the UN had they closed them. And yet, they guise all this using economic reasons just as they always do. the slave trade, it was the same thing. These people have not changed. Dont even compare yourselves to these savages.

  2. Now that’s what we call democracy. You sell your idea to the masses, they reject it then u morally step down. Both win because Cameron earns his integrity to what he stands on…then exit get what they wanted. AFRICA shall forever lag behind because of this. sometimes its not the leader who is even clinging to the thrown but the ba ka ndila pushing him/her to stay on. We saw this with our two late presidents( Levy AND micheal) If these guys had a way they would have stepped down due to healthy issues but they were being pushed to go ahead

  3. Can ECL do the same for not having a vision, for bringing back papa corrupt RB, for not doing anything upon assuming office after our great leader SATA died and for stealing k23 milion from us impoverished Zambian people.

  4. Instead of trying to rig the elections Lungu should handover power to HH peacefully. People of Zambia have decided they do not want u and your Panga Family. Please do not set Zambia ablaze. U should emulate David Cameron and leave office on 11th August 2016. Dont impose yourself on us by stealing our votes. There is life beyond state house and besides u are now K23.7 m rich and the state will give u a Pension. Pse go peacefully and in need LAZ can restore yr practice certificate as lawyer

    • ARE YOU SURE ECL WILL WANT TO RIG THESE ELECTIONS. WITH ALL THE MASSIVE SUPPORT HE IS ENJOYING IN LUAPULA, NORTHERN, LUSAKA , COPPERBELT, EASTERN., MUCHINGA, AND A BIG PORTION OF CENTRAL PROVINCES?

    • If there were no questions concerning HH spiritual standing, I could have supported your proposal but Man I cant support whoever is suspected to bow to rulers of the dark world.

Find a replacement for him then the proposal can be considered.

  5. I’m glad to see the back of the moon-faced lunatic, at least until someone even worse pops up to replace him. He has presided over the economic lie of austerity that has literally robbed the poor to feed the greed of the rich, when he could have been investing in people, jobs and public services rather than giving handouts to failed bankers who caused the financial crisis. Good riddance!

  6. I like the fact that in other countries they don’t take advantage of leadership,it is most likely to be developed because of new Ideas coming in by different politicians.

  7. Funny. Others are fighting to join the EU, while others are willingly voting to move out. Personally I feel that they have made a mistake. They will be isolated and having restrictions on their goods and services

  8. Ba bingo which pipo of Zambia have decided the only places where upnd is 100% sure that they will win its southern & north western & to tell u the truth ukuli change takulubikwa. am sorry as at now there is no wind of change like the way it was mu 1991 & 2011, just keep on campaigning for the sadist guy

  9. That’s why I can’t understand why Ba Chikwanda is still our Finance minister because he has failed us.

    • He is the Finance Minister because he is Bemba, and an uncle to the late dictator Sata. Chikwanda has no other saving characteristic. Anywhere in the world, he would not be a minister.

  10. If it was an African leader he would not have resigned. Europe and America are full of principled leaders. That’s why they are developed.

  11. The only leader in high office to have resigned in Zambia as Vice President was Lavy Mwanawasa. At least he tried. Not aba aba shala. Busy shutting down newspapers so that they can continue to be in power. Look at their campaign messages ati Umuntu? What is umuntu in relation to high interest rates, high cost of living etc. bakoswe imwee.

  12. This is the real referendum. But here when you say referendum ati it is expensive. The right way to hear people’s voices is through the referendum and they have spoken.

Not here where we dribble citizens through amendments that perpetuate people in government as ministers so that they can continue looting. Constitutions meant to dribble others with grade twelve qualifications. Ala tase bane.

  13. Lungu has kept his illegal Ministers in their positions to assist in rigging the elections. On 12th August 2016 figures will be cooked to swifly declare Lungu the winner and the illegal Ministers will be handy to rule under a state of emergency. U notice Lungu’s judges in the Concourt are not in a hurry to rule on the fate of the illegal Ministers. They are busy timing the judgment to be in line with Lungu’s rigging plans. Lungu is up to no good and must be stopped. Viva HH and UPND.

  14. Hey ba mambala pamulu u r busy discussing zambian politics when the picture on top is not for your country muzungu ni muzungu.Congratulations cameroun..camellion.

    • Yes muzungu ni muzungu, a savage has shown you its true colors. And this time the evidence is in your face. its not the leadership but the majority of the people in britain who voted to say, we dont want arabs, african and other non white foreigners on our continent as equals. If the EU will continue to accept these foreigners as equals then we are leaving. i cant be as a british be the same as an african or arab as equal (Turkey).
Muzungu will never change, he will always be a beast. You cant tame them. its in the nature of the beast. If you followed briatins reasons for their actions in the EU, you will find it was always guided by exploitation of non white countries which unfortunately for them the EU started accepting as member ountries. I cant congratulate a beast, cameroon or his…

  15. Even Hichilema must ressign after being rejected by the people of zambia four(4) times.Edgar came for the first time and Zambians accepted me.RIP HH After 8/11.

  16. Ehe! Eco mulefwilila mu tuma ofeshi twine uto ati until I become president. Did you see Ed Miliband sticking it out after he lost elections? Or McCain and Kerry in the USA? In Africa rejection is interpreted as “they want me to try another way”. Mwe mbwa mwe! Well done Cameron, but these Africans will not learn from you as they continue to advance their own red herrings on the subject of conceding defeat…
