Chipata businessman convicted for corrupt practices

A Chipata Businessman has been convicted by the Chipata Magistrate Court of Corrupt Practices.

Chipata Magistrate Moses Phiri sentenced Martin Njekwa to 9 months imprisonment with hard labour.

This is in a matter in which Martin Njekwa, 51, of Plot No. 48, Kapata township in Chipata, Eastern Province was arrested and charged by the Anti-Corruption Commission with one count of Corrupt Practices by Public Officer contrary to Section 19 (1) of the Anti-Corruption Act No. 3 of 2012.

Details are that on unknown dates but between 1st February 2014 and 15th February 2014,Martin Njekwa employed to perform public functions as a Chipata Consumer Watch Group Volunteer for the Energy Regulation Board corruptly solicited for K7000.00 cash gratification from Mohammed Uzair Ishmail , the Managing Director of Oasis Filling Station in Chipata and actually received K5000.00 cash and 10 litters of petrol from the said Mohammed for him (Njekwa) not to cause the arrest of Mohammed for operating Oasis Filling Station without a licence.
