Zambia is this December expected to complete the exportation of 39,000 metric tonnes of Maize to neighbouring countries as part of a World Food Programme supported deal.
In a statement, the WFP says Zambia has approved maize exports and initiated a series of convoys carrying maize from last year’s harvest to support people in need in Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe and has to date exported 30,000 metric tonnes.
It said the balance for export, 39,000 metric tonnes, is expected to be completed by December 2016, ahead of the rainy season..
The Government of Zambia, through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), continues to provide support to WFP’s humanitarian maize export operation.
And the WFP has announced that it will phase out direct food delivery under the Home Grown School Feeding programme and focus on producing and locally procuring nutritious foods.
This, it says will provide a market for smallholder farmers.
The Government is committed to increasing its financial contribution to the HGSF programme to reach two million primary-school learners by 2020.
The 2nd hungry country exporting its own food.
We had people like PF ministers, who sold all fish catch , but feed their family on cassava leaves.
Meanwhile the price of mealie meal keeps rising every day in Zambia!!!!!!

WFP iwe UPND the problem is that everything is now politics with you people, let’s work together if you have ideas bring them forth and develop our Country Zambia.
That is what Mrs Wina said 2 weeks ago when she answered questions in parliament and now they are changing the story again !! It is a crime that we are exporting to maize to neighbouring countries when our own people are starving. The government simply does not care about it’s own it would rather feed Zimbabwe. This is very very sad indeed
They are exporting maize , but they have not paid us poor local transporters for 2 good years .
Any way politics has gone to the dogs now. Minister of Agriculture was saying the FRA has short fall in maize procurement. Meaning there will be shortage of food in the country.
But PF agenda is continuing of destruction path to export the little food we have.
