Mr Mwamba said there was no need for the UPND to go for a national convention next year because the opposition party was going to nominate Mr Hichilema as its presidential candidate in the next general elections.
Mr. Mwamba claimed that Mr Hichilema remained the most popular and sought for leader not only in the UPND but by all Zambians across the breadth and length of the country.
The UPND vice-president for administration said this at a media briefing at Grand Hotel in Lusaka yesterday.
Mr Mwamba said Mr Hichilema was delivering to the aspirations and expectations of the UPND members and that the opposition leader was going to be allowed to hold on to his position until 2021.
“It is not necessary for our party to change leaders. Therefore, UPND will not have a national convention. Our general membership has a lot of trust and confidence in Mr Hichilema who has continued to deliver to the expectations and aspirations of the party members and Zambians in general. So our president (Hichilema) will remain the leader of the UPND beyond 2017 and until 2021,” Mr. Mwamba said.
Mr Mwamba urged party members to continue supporting the UPND leadership and Mr Hichilema as the opposition leader endeavoured to take over the governance of the country.
Does that mean they have finally conceded.

The best would have been if HH was re-elected after a national convention, that way he would have had even a much more stronger position.
In this case, we have no way to verify if UPND members have the same view as GBM. We know HH is the stronger candidate, but let the members have a say, otherwise, this is giving PF ammunition, which HH might not be able to duck come 2021.

HH should have gone for one to re-enact himself and put away possible aspersions of being a dictator. Now like this even if he has a better chance to win, people will be skeptical. He will look like an “imposed loser” who is refusing to go away! So far there is no third force developing and PF with a President who appears lost in both appearance ,speech and actions, with a not so politically savvy Secretary General and with growing dissatisfaction among some old members, seems to be heading into disarray! This gives UPND more chance to win the next election but they need to market themselves as a party of consensus not that of few powerful individuals.

Comment: Now those Thomases must agree on what we were saying, that the petition of the previous elections was nothing but to prepare and assess the mood of the general membership on how the reaction would be after announcing that there will be no conversion. And yesterday it was the right time to announce the development. The general membership were even taught that there was no appeal at ICC and at ICJ the members were blank about ICC and at one time they were talking of 23rd November to be the judgement at ICC.

If HH was not to be UPND presidential candidate in 2021, then it would have defeated the whole purpose of his current noise on the election petition. LOL- Reading between the lines, I have my strong doubts about the accuracy of this report. It clearly does not add up. Analyse this:-
• It would be premature for GBM/UPND to talk about 2021elections when they are in the middle of pending court cases regarding Lungu’s Presidency.
• HH is reported to have said he is prepared to take the current court cases to the supreme court / International Court if needs be.
• HH does not need to make such a retrogressive move because he is popular enough in UPND to be elected next UPND Presidential candidate.
So, this is story is a fabrication and meant to discredit HH and give the impression he has given up on the current cases.
The constitution states 14 days the case has to be heard. Even if the High court hears complaints, it shall only be to alleviate any ill feelings towards the court by the general population. HH and GBM are using this to hold on to the UPND’s leadership. Since you the UPND members are too weak to call for a convention.
