President Edgar Lungu has officially commissioned the Zambian Breweries’ US$33 million state-of-the-art malting plant in the Lusaka South Multi Facility Economic Zone (LS-MFEZ).

“This new facility, which is the first of its kind in Zambia, will enable locally grown barley to be processed into malt, the main ingredient for clear beer. It will contribute to creating business for farmer suppliers who will provide the brewery with barley, thus spurring economic growth and job creation, ultimately putting more money in people’s pockets,” said President Lungu during his address to assembled dignitaries, including Finance Minister Hon. Felix Mutati and Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Hon. Margaret Mwanakatwe.

The new plant is part of Zambian Breweries’ long-term investment plan in Zambia and is set to boost purchases of barley from local farmers as a key ingredient in the company’s popular Mosi, Castle and Castle Lite lagers.

The company’s multi-million dollar investment in the maltings plant is a component of the group’s wider commitment to long-term investment, spurred by the government’s recent reduction in excise tax on clear beer. In the last five years Zambian Breweries, National Breweries and Heinrich’s Syndicate have invested more than US$350 million in long-term capital projects.

In alluding to the reduction in excise tax on clear beer, President Lungu said: “I am reliably informed that Zambian Breweries plc made a decision to expand its business portfolio as a direct response to the Patriotic Front government’s 2016 National Budget that included a reduction in the excise tax on clear beer from 60 to 40 percent. This resulted in the Zambian Breweries plc making a saving and investing US$33 million in the malting plant which is being commissioned today.”

Zambian Breweries Country Director Annabelle Degroot said: “At the time that clear beer excise was reduced to 40 percent, some people were worried about such a move, but that bold policy by government has proved to be absolutely the right decision and a win-win for government and business. We commend and thank government for their forward looking policies.”
“Zambian Breweries is committed to following the law; to paying taxes; and to promoting responsible drinking. Zambian Breweries is also committed to continued investment in Zambia,” she added.

The group’s investments are helping it to grow production volumes, thus increasing employment opportunities, enabling the company to buy more agricultural commodities such as barley, maize, sorghum and cassava from local suppliers and boost sales, thus increasing overall tax revenue to the government.

The new facility – the first of its kind in Zambia – will enable locally grown barley to be processed into malt, the main ingredient for clear beer, for the first time in Zambia, creating more business for farmer suppliers who provide the brewery with barley thus spurring economic growth, job creation and national development, explained Mrs Degroot.

“This malting plant is a concrete demonstration of the confidence that Zambian Breweries and its shareholders have in the long-term growth of the economy and the stability of the tax environment,” she added.

Construction of the plant began in January 2015 and employed 1,000 workers at peak of the construction. Now that the project is complete, Zambian Breweries expects to recruit some 50 permanent workers.

The plant has a maximum capacity of 15,000 tonnes of finished malt per year, creating a surplus over the brewery’s current demand of 10,000 tonnes and thus producing excess supply that can be exported.

The barley will be stored in ten massive 1,500 tonne-silos, each 32 metres high, which involved the country’s largest single pour of concrete – 1,800 cubic metres – for their foundations.

  1. Look at the first picture, Lungu’s dental formula is truly shameful. Can’t his handlers surely not tell him there dentists where he can have them cleaned or better still wear braces to bring the in alignment? Like this he really looks like an act right out of Michael Jackson’s blockbuster “Thriller”.

    • When they heard ZB the whole cabinet wanted to visit…why is Mutati there when he visited already, even Maggie was there last month…they are a wasteful bunch this lot.

  2. So much interest in this malting plant, in two weeks, mwanakatwe, mutati and now lungu have visited the place , these are not just ordinary visits, are they giving away six packs as well?

  3. more money in brainy farmers pockets, no petition bakaamba just cool cash. nizashanga barley this year.soooooooonta epowabomba

    • How many farmers do you know personally in your village who grow barley? This is commerical farmers territory.

  4. Mwanakatwe yena ki kwaatelwa feela ki lilaho tuna ni kusa bizezwa kwa mileko. I mean, her bum seems to constitute nearlt 70 percent of her whole body weight. You bet her Mr is endowed like a donkey to navigate himself through such a jungle of flesh to the goodies. No wonder she is getting ‘some’ from elsewhere, you remember the two boys she handled simultaneously and one confiscated her bag after she failed to pay up claiming they failed to make her come, ala mwine Chipata ni lwanya bebele ku sansamcation activities.

  5. Yet another one of “Zambian” company owned and directed by foreigners. From Shoprite to MTN to Zambia Breweries we’re owned by South Africa.

    • KCM owned by indians
kansanshi, Mopani owned by south africa
Zambia Breweries owned by south africa
      Cabinet owned by chinese

Zambians own nothing. It’s like we are renting in our own house.

    • Dangote owns a cement plant . hh at least owns a big mansion in new kasama and he sells cattle to zambeef, he has at least used his hard stolen man to good use

    • President should not honour such foreign industries. He is better off being at a junior science fair encouraging our youth to being scientific and upright citizens. The other day he lamented at how alcohol was destroying lives of our youth, today you glorify those responsible for this disaster vice. As some say, he says what he doesn’t mean.

    • Enka, Like some of your supporters here, what have you done for Zambia yourself? You want ECL to come and tell you go and build a malting plant in Mazabuka?

    • I remember before the Boers bought ZB, we had about three locally produced lagers…now all of them have been killed off..to make way for RSA lagers…we are just good at opening bottles and getting drunk whilst making foreigners very rich.

  6. More drunkenness on the way. Expect less productivity among the locals. The foreign investors will be the ultimate winners while their hosts will reap socio-economic ills. Serves the current crop of politicians well. Make the masses drunk all the time so that they may forget their problems while we go full throttle with our plunder!

  7. Of course when it comes to beer related issues this rats teeth are fully beaming. However issues to do with poverty and the rule of law he remains ignorant and dodges reality. Why is he scared to have petition heard if he believes he won fairly. In every society if you are accused of theft the system allows for those accusing you to prove their case and then for you to dispute it . Why are they using legal technicalities to not have the petition heard. Lungu will never be Zambias president. He is not recognised and shall continue to not be.

    • Old man Sata’s coffin must be ash by now due to his spining in anger as he left the keys to proud lazy foool!!

  8. Thanks government. But I think that chi Freedom Sikazwe just spoils good pictures. Surely does he always have to squeeze himself to be in front and next to the President ahead of Mutati and Mwanakatwe who were more relevant to the occasion? Watch better on TV as he struggles to get in front and fiddles his fingers, neck, eyes, bends his whole body in a manner similar to a brat. Can’t someone teach him some manners?

  9. I hope the Minister of the so called Ministry of Religious and fimofimo was there to appreciate beer industry…

  10. In the meantime Chagwa ayaka nafuchi, whilst Kaizer is still being “Investigated”
This Virus Kaizer continues to deplete taxpayers cash, when the Drunk should have prioritised & shown his “Special assistant for corruption” the door.
    YABA!!!

  11. By the way does HH own shares in Zambian Breweries? Or has he now withdrawn them as a sign of boycotting the President? I mean if you don’t like or recognise the President, as a shareholder you would not want him to commission your project would you? Doing so amounts to recognition doesn’t it?
Anyway Donkeys think differently from me.

  12. MALOZA why not encourage the so called Rich Zambians to own these things, if you think that everything needs to be owned by Government then you are wrong. This thing of always blaming foreign investment is wrong.

  13. Again minions trying hard to sound negative over an issue they very well know will spur economic growth. If this in not what opposition are promising Zambia then they should forget about our votes.

  14. If only beer was food…instead of visiting this place these foools should be visiting the so called local Barley farmers. I am sure most of it comes from SA.

  15. This president Lungu is the worst amongst world leaders we have honestly speaking how can he commission a plant which could have been commissioned by a minister? This is a kind of a president who commission toilets in the market. Useless president and foolish!

  16. This job of commissioning a beer plant should be left to the ministry of commerce and industry. Who in the history of this country ever reduced the office of the republican president to such lower levels of even commissioning a branch for ZANACO commercial bank? Where was the minister of finance at that time to have allowed the head of state reduce himself to such low levels of doing duties meant for ministers? Ba ECL please have some dignity on certain things. That office you are holding is a dignified and well respected office

    • Lazy knows no such thing as dignity …this is a Head of State who proudly commissions a mere Shopping Mall with 100% foreign shareholding in most countries this is left to the City Mayor but these are shameless kaponyas in suits. This is a bum who welcomed the Indian KCM Boss whatever his name is, the crook who was disrespecting the Office of The Zambian President. This is a crook who brags about buying KCM for nothing he only paid for it after selling the copper he dug out from the very mine…today he is welcome in State House he can even put his hands in his pocket and promise billions of dollars in investments whilst he is polluting our country.

  17. You UPND donkeys just go and worship you ka god HH. Like him you are so full of hatred no wonder you keep on losing you think us in the majority who voted for ECL will change because of insults ???. You are so dull

  18. Nothing wrong with progress. Where there was no investment before, God has added and is still adding. All those who are negative about progress need salvation & God’s grace. You can’t spend rest of your life being bitter & judgemental. Such a sad life! No one in this world is perfect except for God. Only God can bring joy & happiness. All you who are bitter need to experience the power of salvation. Then you’ll realise that it’s not man or possessions that will bring joy & happiness to you but the blessing of the Lord God Almighty. Dare to try God & you won’t believe what you have been missing.

    • God bless you @ Pef. I’m a blessed *****. I don’t need to use religion. Many Zambians have already experienced God & know He is real & Christianity is real. Whatever you do or say God will always be the winner. Zambia will win under Christian leadership. The beauty is that we all have a choice. You can choose to remain bitter & sad or you can choose salvation which promises joy & happiness because the focus isn’t this earth & what is in it. Our focus is Glory. Nothing can compare with Heaven. God Bless Zambia which God is using to win many more would!

  19. Surely whats wrong with us even this selfsame Lusaka Multi- Facility Economic Zone (MFEZ) according to ZDA website is a Government programme…introduced to Zambia in 2005 by the Japanese Government through Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA). Then you have fooools like Lazy and tins smiling like children in a candy shop in a beer factory opening foreign facilities everyday and wasting taxpayer funds on overpriced roads.

  20. Lungu is shameless. Having stolen 2016 Elections he actually believes he can get way with murder and be recognized as President without the Petition Hearing. The man is such a hypocrite. He wants to be recognized by the Petitioners after stealing their votes. Lungu is pretending that the Petition does not exist even though it is in Court. Petitioners we are behind u and keep fighting until the Petition is heard. The Hearing of the Petition for Lungu is like convicting himself to death so the Petition should be moved to International Courts without further delays. Lungu knows in Court he will never hope to win the Petition and that is why Lungu is fighting by all means to keep the Petition out of Court and making sure it will Never be Heard. #Let the Petition be heard without fail.

  21. @1 Muuba, does that explain why UPNDonkeys are still bitter about Chanda being THE President of Zambia and not HH? Take it easy my brother, we voted for the love of the person and not his dental formula, and for his natural love for other people. I will not say anything about your HH but I think you get the message.

  22. You can call him what ever you want but to us majority of Zambiana who voted for him he is our beloved President. The problem with @jay jay is that you believe in your own reality which is created by your retarded briains , you are actually sick

    • @Mambwe Are you an Internet Medical Doctor by Profession? Yes I confess I am actually “very sick” of the rampant corruption, the incompetence, the lack of leadership, lack of delegating, utter recklessness of your beloved President Lazy Bum Lungu. If you are not sickened by this ..then its you who needs a thorough check up!

  23. You can call him what ever you want but to us majority of Zambiana who voted for him he is our beloved President. The problem with @jay jay is that you believe in your own reality which is created by your retarded briains , you are actually sick.

  24. @22 Musa, hearing a petition, what petition? You mean the noise from UPNDonkeys?
Read the article by Mwinelubemba Chitimukulu where you will find that even Professor Hansungule agrees that the petition of 2016 died within 14 days. As far as we know there is no petition to hear or talk about. If there is such a stu.pid piece of scrap paper in the courts the cleaners will soon sweep it into its rightful place, the dustbin.

  25. Can you imagine these Upnd donkeys think that there is a petition in the courts, i dont know what type of dullness this is. First and foremost the only court mandated to hear a petition is the concourt which expired once the 14 days elapsed. What they have in the high court (which is inferior to the Concourt) cannot overturn the Concourt ruling.

  26. What’s the latest from HH, is the donkey in town? I hear that his ruining mate cannot walk, he needs surgery? But that does not slow down the legal bill bwana GBM Donkey.
By the time time all your cases (you and hh) are closed the winner will be your lawyers. So then and you planning to petition your lawyers? Have you thought who will represent you in that petition? Lawyers again, you don’t win you Donkeys, listen to me for once.

  27. Guys lungu tewalenga ati tutemwe uku bombelela, bunangani bwesufye fwe ma zambians. That’s why even in times of K K twalebombela ama sene sene kwashombe.

  28. Firstly, this could have been ‘commissioned’ by a district commissioner or someone along those lines. Secondly, the article says 50 permanent jobs will be created. Really? Is that part of the 500,000 promised? Thirdly, in all reasonableness, for how long will this President be all over the place for populist endeavours? He has to open and commission every crevice and ‘tuntemba’ projects? What time is he in his office? What do all the other appointees do? Or he wants all the accolades to ‘justify’ the lack of actual policies?

    • A DC commission a us$33m plant owned by one of Zambia’s largest taxpayers?? owned by one of Zambia’s best employers?? ZB not only has employees on their payroll, what about the chain of distributors like Master Kent, Nenima trading etc-all Zambian distributors who have made fortunes working with ZB!! Every compound in Zambia has a ZB container which empowers local businessmen and creates employment indirectly-as I told you before, you should think before you post. ZB is now owned by the largest brewer on the planet yet you call it ‘tuntemba’ project-YOUR INTOLERANCE, DENIAL AND BITTERNESS IS CLOUDING YOUR MENTAL PERCEPTION OF REALITY, accept the election result and move on!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. What a shame, Zambian Breweries has been bought from Zabmiller a South African company by a Germany company. The Germany company that bought this company deals with Pepsi in Germany as a result they are not going to be making Coca Cola, there is another Franchise that has come in to take up the coke products, so more Zambians are loosing employment as the company is taken over yet the Government wants to show like they have done a lot of work there is an economic boost but people are loosing employment as these investors take over the company, same applies to Finance Bank taken over by another bank that won’t take up all the Finance bank branches, more people going out of employment.
