Heavily armed Police officers raided the residence of opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema in New Kasama area in Lusaka.
Police switched off power at the house, blocked the main roads and the broke down the gates to the house to gain access to the house before firing teargas into the house.
It is believed that Mr Hichilema and his wife and children were in the house at the time of the raid.
Mr Hichilema’s lawyers were initially prevented from accessing the house but Jack Mwiimbu confirmed that he was later allowed inside after 01 Hours.
Around 03 Hours, police officers were still inside the house and it was unclear what they were searching.
Mobile phones belonging to all the people inside the house are now unreachable.
Police Spokeswoman Esther Mwaata Katongo said police will issue a statement later.
And MMD President Nevers Mumba condemned the police action at Mr Hichilema’s residence.
“We are just witnessing more teargas being fired at the residence of UPND President, Hakainde Hichilema and state Police have surrounded the entrance and even his lawyers are not allowed to enter,” he posted on his Facebook page.
“This comes while another opposition leader, Savior Chishimba has announced that he is in hiding for fear of similar intimidation from the Police, Fred Members is in hiding for fear of similar state intimidation and GBM, the UPND Vice president was earlier today teargassed for talking to the press after his court case,” he said.
“Is this why the PF wants to withdraw us from the ICC? We demand that this kind of targeted intimidation of the opposition must come to an end immediately. We also implore the international community to quickly check independently, the state of affairs we are quickly being plunged into as a country,” Dr Mumba said.

The Mongu saga is not on HH but on the Office of the President (OP). OP is supposed to protect the President. They were supposed to “sweep” the route the President was supposed to use and ensure that there was nothing that would endanger the President’s life. The advance vehicles should have stopped HH convoy. There is nothing to suggest that this was attempted and HH refused. OP failed to do their job so put the head of OP to task instead of harassing HH.
