Esiasa said charging the Opposition leader with serious charges as stated by the Zambia Police and reported by the media is very saddening.
He has since appealed to Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Lillian Siyuni not to entertain such charges as the charges do not hold any water.
Esiasa urged the DPP not support the charges on the opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema and his aides because the encumbrances are just an academic exercise aimed at politicising the judicial system in Zambia.
He further stated that the charges on the opposition leader are just exposing weakness in the police service and their inability to stomach political pressure in Zambia.
The ZSPA President however noted that the treason Charge on Hakainde Hichilema should be considered as a governance ‘hoax’ whose motive is to divert public attention from Police failure and blaming the opposition.
He explained that the incidence that happened in Mongu is the clear indication of Police failure in their duties, adding that the high command should have been charged in this regard instead of victimizing the opposition over their slumber on duty.
Esiasa has echoed sentiments by some section of society calling for the dismissal of the Inspector General of Police to pave way for thoroughly investigation.
He further appealed to President Edgar Lungu not be blackmailed by the State Police and those in charge of protecting his life because such blackmailing will just cost the President’s image in the international community.

For common people dealing with police everyday no one has to force us to understand offence was committed in Mongu. We can see in video & are surprised by impunity with which crime was committed. Even when President is not passing we get arrested for simple offences as minibus drivers or pedestrians on the road & we quietly do time or pay fines where authorities find us guilty. According to some rich people if rich person has committed most serious offence in land he shouldn’t be subjected to same law as common people. Unfortunately for UPND there is pro-poor GRZ which won’t be understood if it doesn’t equally apply law. Even DPP is employed by people of Zambia no just rich people. Best approach is to be civil to avoid prosecution.

I agree with the author of this article. The Police actually failed in this regard. If they are trully trained, they can not fail to handle a few civilians with no military training at all. The presidential motorcade requires both lanes all the time not necessarily for road safety reasons but for security reasons.
Please understand that, that HH will not be charged for careless driving (after all he was not driving), but for security bleach.
The argument that he was not driving dies not hold water, because when you are being driven by a personal driver, you are in charge of his conduct in the road.
You stop this driver when you want him to stop and tells him to turn when you want to.
You are fully in charge and answerable to any matters that may border on security, while he may answer one or two queries regarding traffic.
HH cannot just head towards Namibia, and force his way onto the Namibian side, without stopping at the border checkpoint, and then claim it was not me driving it was my driver.
While his driver may be given traffic offence charges, HH will answer more serious security breach charges.

I’m a layman but the moment I heard that HH had been charged with treason I laughed it off. This case will not go anywhere. For me the indictment should be against the police and the president’s handlers. Never is the history of this country have I ever heard of the presidential motorcade overtaking other vehicles and for that matter a convoy of vehicles. When there is a security breach and the president is exposed, the first thing to do is to establish what led to the breach. What was the security plan for the function and what went wrong? Summon everybody who failed to perform their duty and charge them accordingly. What is treason? In summary, treason is to overthrow an elected government through unlawful means. Now that means to take over completely. In the Mongu issue, let’s assume (God forbid, ECL was killed), Inonge Wina would’ve taken over and of would still be in power. This means treason doesn’t apply. The proper charge should be failing to obey traffic instructions & endangering the President’s life. The President himself has said that Zambians don’t read & I believe him. Most people don’t even understand what treason is….

If there was any failure to be cited on the part of the police on the presidential convoy in mongu, it was failure to eliminate the obstacle (including by gunshots). UPND and HH must be grateful to the police for not following through with recommended security protocols!
