UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema and his five co-accused have pleaded not guilty to the charge of treason.
Mr Hichilema this morning appeared in the Lusaka High Court for plea.
He said he understood the charge, but that he was not guilty.
“I strongly deny the charge”, said Mr Hichilema as the other accused also denied the charge.
The High Court has since set Wednesday August 16, 2017 as date of commencement of trial, while the accused persons remain in custody.
The state has indicated that it will bring eight witnesses.
The Director of Public Prosecutions applied to amend the indictment from in “Lusaka Province and Mongu” to “Lusaka Province and Western Province”, and the court granted it as there was no objection from the defence.

I would like to wholeheartedly endorse HH for President in 2021. No amount of scheming by evil doers will stop you HH. As a PF member, it is clear that my party will lose the 2021 general elections. The PF – MMD alliance has be tried and found wanting. Since the formation of this alliance Zambia’s peace has become unstable, unemployment is on the increase, agriculture is on the decline and corruption has increased. GBM ACQUITTED BY THE KITWE MAGISTRATE COURT
UPND Vice-President Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba popularly known as GBM has this morning been acquitted on all accounts, in the Kitwe Magistrate court.
GBM was arrested at the height of elections last year on fake charges of slapping a street vendor and damaging property worth K500.
