Opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema has paid tribute to late President Levy Mwanawasa on the occasion to mark the 9th anniversary of his death.

Mr Hichilema said the late Dr Mwanawasa provided for a leadership based on sound and prudent economic management anchored on zero tolerance to corruption, respect for basic freedoms, civil liberties and the rule of law.

He said Dr Mwanawasa was a selfless and visionary leader.

“Under Dr Mwanawasa, free press flourished and blossomed, the freedoms of expression, assembly and association thrived while differences of political opinions and divergent views strengthened our common values, as a society who saw things in different perspectives, but all bound and in one accord over one common destiny, as one Nation under One God,” Mr Hichilema wrote on his Facebook page.

He said the death of President Mwanawasa was without doubt the darkest day of the Nation’s history.

“On the day the tragic news was received, our Republic stood still and held vigil by our radios and televisions, trying to absorb what had befallen the nation,” he said.

“Our Radios were jammed with callers of different ethnicities, religions, races, gender and national origins. Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Bahai and African traditional religions were bound together by the sadness of the grave loss, but most importantly, they were held together by our shared values, patriotism, solidarity and pride with which our founding fathers and mothers built this Nation upon.”

He added, “Our profound grief at the loss of a visionary, nationalist and distinguished lawyer, quickly gave way to the hope for a better future, based on the firm social, economic and political foundation he had built for us, within such a short period of time. And so the Nation began to celebrate the rewards of his selfless and visionary leadership based on sound and prudent economic management anchored on zero tolerance to corruption, respect for basic freedoms, civil liberties and the rule of law.”

“Though President Mwanawasa lived in his era gone by as a result of his sad and untimely demise, his leadership belonged to the present and future expectations of what new African gorvernance ought to be, accountable, transparent and honest.”

The UPND leader said Dr Mwanawasa unlocked the potential of future generations, inspired confidence in budding youth business leaders, gave hope to women entreupreunship, and created an enabling environment for marketeers and farmers.

“The President set pace on the uncompromised fight against corruption, cronyism and political violence and defined a sound and sober ideology that, a fellow politician with a divergent view is not a sworn enemy, but a political opponent and a fellow citizen,” Mr Hichilema said.

“He answered a call beyond duty, ran his race and accomplished so much so few have achieved in so short a period of time,” he said.

“On this day on the celebration of the brave, corrupt free and visionary leadership of President Mwanawasa, we pay our heartfelt tribute to the widow, Dr Maureen Mwanawasa and family who gave more than what was expected of them by sharing President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa to Zambia. May God bless them always.”

“In the words of an anonymous poet, we conclude with these profound words, “He shall not grow old as we who are left grow old. Age shall not weary him nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we shall remember him”. May the soul of Dr Levy Patrick Mwanawasa rest in peace.”

  1. I hope you still remember the counsel he gave you concerning publicising help rendered to those in need: President Mwanawasa said there were so many problems in Zambia which Hichilema should help out on quietly instead of publicising them to gain political mileage.
“We have so many orphans who cannot go to school, and we have so many people who are going hungry. Why don’t you contribute money so that you can alleviate their suffering without even talking about it?” President Mwanawasa asked.

PRESIDENT Levy Mwanawasa has charged that UPND president Hakainde Hichilema is practising cheap politics. And President Mwanawasa said it must be compulsory for every child to go to school. Addressing a rally at Kagoro Basic School on Wednesday where he was lobbying Milanzi electorates to vote for MMD parliamentary candidate in yesterday’s by-election, Reuben Chisanga Banda, President said he was unhappy with the behaviour of an opposition political party leader – in reference to Hichilema – who paid medical bills for two students of University of Zambia (UNZA) who were shot at by police during a demonstration.

    • “My colleagues in the opposition political parties, you should be truthful, you should be frank, and you should exhibit high levels of integrity. Don’t cheat,” President Mwanawasa said. “You Hichilema urge them students to demand more allowances, you don’t even stop to think where the money is going to come from.
President Mwanawasa advised Hichilema not to make noise about the help he offered to the needy in society. “If you help because you want to get a simple vote, it’s very unfortunate,” he said. “There are many things which we are doing for this country beyond paying medical fees for three or four students. We are building schools, health centres, hospitals, we are buying materials and equipment for all these institutions, and they cost a lot of money.”…

    • @Ba Sebenza
      @ Patriot,
Do you guys even know what an EULOGY is? Little knowledge is dangerous. How childish can you get?

    • @ sebenza; why should it be HH s duty to care for orphans? who is the president of Zambia? where is the tax money all going to? where do the donar funds end up? do not begrudge HH his wealth he earns it.

      @Ba Sebenza and Patriots
You guts rock! Digging in the Archives to shedding more light at how politicians can be hypocrites. I love that. I enjoy LT when you guys point out real issues and counter politicians rhetoric.
      =============================
Mean while you HH goons who like insulting on LT heed your leader advice which goes “Stop insulting others on social media, HH advises supporters”

    • @Patriot,
whatever you quotes are concerning “Levy accuses HH of cheap politics”, is purely irrelevant. If this was the case, HH is acknowledging the fact that Mwanawasa was “selfless and visionary leader”. He is basically comparing modern/current leader with Mwanawasa and he sees a vacuum, hence honoring the man.
So what is your point in castigating him? Is it because he has not said how ECL is a great leader?
Come on guys, and stop smearing other people with your faeces in your hands.
Instead, HH should be congratulated for the great words. Where are ECL words? He has forgotten Mwanawasa and enjoying in SA

    • @General Kanene, you are talking about feces as if they have blinded you. What Patriot is merely quoting are facts, utterances that are familiar with HH. Will you call a snake for what it is not? You Kanene can read between the lines and you inwardly know what’s motivating brother HH.

  2. But Hichilema said President Mwanawasa should be ashamed and embarrassed for having failed to help the students. He said he paid for the students not to gain political mileage but to save life.

    • It is along the same lines that hh is operating on. He wants to use Mwanawasa’s name to gain cheap political mileage. It is the same with Mutembo Nchito. hh and his cadres strongly opposed his appointment as DPP, the same cadres were even beaten by police at parliament. Today, Nchito is a darling to hh, what has changed?? hh speaks of press freedom during Mwanawasa, that time the press was 90%+ dominated by one newspaper, it was a monopoly!! The same newspaper use to insult hh left, right and centre; It was the post that coined the “bantustan” label on hh: today he wants to defend them??? WHAT TRULY DOES hh BELIEVE IN, WHAT IS HIS IDEOLOGY???

    • @Zambian citizen
      @ Patriot,
Do you guys even know what an EULOGY is? Little knowledge is dangerous. How childish can you get?

    • @zambian citizen- the answer to your question is ” nothing has changed, they are simply bantu botatwe ” i hope you know what i mean.

  3. HH is a dimwit cretin who doesn’t believe even in himself. I was shocked to read from other media that even nevers mumbwe said levy was a good leader. This tell volumes about what people say when you’re no more. Even on satas memorial hh will shower the same praises. Ck was a corrupt and tribal divider buffoon only yesterday but today he is a hero in the site of under5.

  4. Look at the PF rats above afraid and too embarrassed to even mention lungu in the same breath as the great Patrick levy mwanawase. What a great leader he was…..great words HH.

  5. Politics is a funny game. Where I come from it’s taboo to talk I’ll of dead person and I hope comrade HH is adhering to this custom. ….that’s if they have the same customs

  6. Mwanawasa was one of the most corrupt leaders Zambia has ever produced. His nepotism was second to none. Even Maureen Kakubo and her relatives accumulated so much wealth during the rule of Mwanawasa. What is there to celebrate? Nepotism? Give us a break!

  7. MISTAKE PLEASE!!! HH will NEVER RULE Zambia but it’s okay to have him rant ’cause we know what it feels like to be a perpetual loser. All he dreams about is President Lungu morning, day and night.

  8. HH and his followers are hypocrites.
They hated Mwanawasa so much because according to them,Mwanawasa “stole” Mazoka’s election victory.
If Mwanawasa was such a ‘nice’ person, then why did HH refuse to work with him?

  9. Obviously, only the weak minded can not see thru HH.
In 2005,Mwanawasa gave a prophesy concerning UPND.
He told the nation that UPND were like buttocks and would always be behind.

  10. The Supreme Leader HH of the UPND should have said those nice words to Former President Mwanawasa when he was still alive…Of what value are these nice words, when he was alive the Supreme Leader seemed to have hated the late President and never wanted to work with him but always put political stunts to discredit the late President…You can mislead those who were born yesterday Sir not some of us…

  11. It is Mwanawasa him self who declared that,’ UPND are like but.tocks which never find itself in front’. True to that even up to now and forever.

  12. In the history of Zambia we had two victims of state capture engineered by the infamous CARTEL. These are the late Presidents Mwanawasa and Sata – May Their Souls Rest In Peace. Presidents Kaunda, Chiluba, R. Banda and EC Lungu refused to be corrupted by Zambian version of GUPTAS. Having spared KK, Chiluba, RB and EC Lungu have experienced the wrath of the Cartel.

Visible actors in the Cartel included: Dr. Mahtani, Mutembo Nchito, Fred Mmembe, Shockingly, invisible players of the Cartel are HH for his support of Mmembe and Linda Kasonde’s links to HH. Hence HH praises on Mwanawasa reveal his hidden links to the Cartel.

  13. Mwanawasa was a corrupt president. He stole millions to enrich himself. Shame he could not take his millions to his grave. He was known for his evil by the Lenje tribe. The Lenje voted for Mazoka instead of Mwanawasa the year Mazoka was cheated out of his victory. Mwanawasa had to beg his cousin who was respected and a man of integrity to convince the Lenje to vote for him. Mwanwasa abused his uncle who raised him like his own son when Mwanwasa’s criminal father was imprisoned. He spent a decade harassing the children of the uncle who raised him. He was an evil man who stole from the Zambian people.

  14. I agree Katonga. Mwanwasa was corrupt and evil. Only one Lenje supported him and that was Shakasatan the criminal. I do not care that this evil man is dead. He was a tyrant not a visionary! The world is a better place without him. Zambia was saved from a destruction far worse than we are witenesding in present days. I am not Lenje but I know of many good men who were harassed to their death because Mwanawasa could not corrupt them.

  15. The Brenthurst Foundation which is presumed to fund the DA and EFF so as to effect regime change in South Africa, and extending its tentacles to Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe, has evolved into a desperate racist capitalist organisation. The Foundation’s desperation is revealed by its failure to recognize political ideologies of EFF (being pro-socialist) and DA (being pro-capitalist). The scenario is so complex that socialist EFF advocates for seizure of land without compensation whereas the DA seeks to protect land owned by the whites.

Whereas the DA shares the same ideology with UPND of promoting white business monopoly in SADC region, Malema’s EFF will be shocked to learn that UPND is also linked to a Cartel of Mmembe, Nchito, Mark Chona, Dr. Mahtani etc whose goal is to effect State…

  16. Whereas the DA shares the same ideology with UPND of promoting white business monopoly in SADC region, Malema’s EFF will be shocked to learn that UPND is also linked to a Cartel of Mmembe, Nchito, Mark Chona, Dr. Mahtani etc whose goal is to effect State capture in order to promote white business monopoly in Zambia, this being the real objective of Greg Mills – a principal Mercenary Officer who runs the Brenthurst Foundatio in league with General Obasanjo.

  17. @Siwanamui #2.3, it is not that you care for the poor but it is your heart of hatred for other people who are not from Namwala and HH who is not in State House that you are showing us! We are too smart to fall for your cheap politics from UPND!

  18. HH is being schooled on things he never knew! Mwanawas? Wow! He even forgot that he became rich when he was doing privatisation under President Chiluba! He might not mention that because it might bring out armyworms!
