Bombardier has backed the revitalisation of the Tanzania-Zambia railway to boost the two-nation’s haulage capacity.

The 1,860km railway connects Zambia – a landlocked nation in southern Africa – to the seaport of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and is operated by Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA).

It is the shortest route to the sea for many central and southern African logistics firms and TAZARA is is working to boost freight on the network.

On September 6, Bombardier signed a memorandum of understanding with TAZARA to explore possibilities for investment cooperation.

This covers track, rolling stock, signalling and telecomms – via international funding options – to improve the network’s capacity and efficiency.

Following the agreement, a joint team will now being formed to agree on the partnership’s scope, after which Bombardier Transportation will submit a full technical and financial proposal.

TAZARA managing director Bruno Ching’andu said: “We are delighted to welcome Bombardier Transportation, an acclaimed global leader in rail and aircraft technology, as one of the key partners in our quest to attain medium to long-term aspirations that include investing in rolling stock and infrastructure.

“On our part, we remain very open to all possibilities for introducing investments in rolling stock and infrastructure, which is essential for uplifting our capacity and instilling confidence in our customers.”

  1. STOP THIS NONSENSE BWANA MD, WE KNOW YOU WORKED FOR BOMBARDIER BEFORE JOINING TAZARA, DONT PLEASE UR MASTERS THROUGH SUCH A DEAL. TAZARA IS A VERY SENSITIVE RAILWAY LINE IN TERMS OF RELATIONS WITH CHINA TANZANIA AND ZAMBIA. LET BOMBARDIER INVEST IN ZAMBIA RAILWAYS WHERE WE HAVE THE INDEPENDENCE . TAZARA BELONGS TO CHINA UNTIL GOD DECIDE TO BURN THIS WORLD. CHINA HAS BEEN AND IS A MAJOR STAKEHOLDER IN TAZARA, U MAKE THIS MISTAKE U AFFECT ANY TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE SUPPORT FROM CHINA, LEARN FROM TANZANIA’S CENTRAL LINE MAGUFULI KICKED US OUT AND PARTNERED WITH TURKEY WHAT IS THE RESULT NOW AND U LIVE IN TANZANIA TELL US?

  2. Why don’t the build kavindeles railway line, we were told everything was in place are ready to start 8 months ago.. ….you made the kaponyas dance dunnuna reverse and sontapo for the rail line ka, where is it ?

  3. The Canadians will build a much better rail road (no strings attached) than the useless Chinese in fact it was the Canadians that were to build the railroad in 1974 but at the last moment the Chinese got the contract from KK guess they gave a bigger gift to KK.

    • @4 Cosmos, while I have NO FACTS just like you, the story I got was that Canadian National Railway and NOT even Bombardier had many difficult conditions including importing railway slippers from Canada which put the cost at an astronomical value and had a longer completion point at time Zambia need easier access to the sea during the UDI of Rhodesia and apartheid blockages on Zambian trade. That time the West had in fact refused to support the railway project as uneconomically viable telling Zambia to mend fences with racist Rhodesia and S.Africa for trade to flow. That is China came is as a solidarity move towards newly independent Zambia pursuing a socialist agenda. The finished the railway line in record time and used alot of local materials to make railway sleepers locally,it was…

    • @7 Shu shu shu while this is true in terms of distance, we need to look at other factors. TAZARA was born of Zambia’s quest to have easier access to the sea when racist Rhodesia(Zimbabwe now) and S.Africa put a blockade on our trade for our support to liberation movements. Mozambique that time was still a Portuguese colony (racist like S.Africa,Rhodesia then) and there was a liberation war going on that time, same case with Benguela in Angola. Tanzania was best and only option that for easier access to the sea!Now we can explore option of railway connections to Nacala,Beira (Mozambique),direct to Lobito(Angola),Walvis Bay(Namibia). But as Beira though nearer the terrain is very mountainous and the port is small, inefficient and not in deep waters for bigger cargo carriers to offer cheaper…
