The opposition UPND in Lusaka has written to the police notifying them of the party’s intention to hold a mammoth rally in Lusaka’s Kanyama area.
The letter authored by UPND Lusaka Province Chairman Dr Bob Sakahilu to Lusaka Police Commissioner says the party plans to hold a rally on October 22nd 2017 at Twashuka grounds in Kanyama.
“Our planned rally will start at 14:hours and we wish to inform you that if your office has no enough officers to police our event, we will go ahead as we already mobilised our own at our own expense,” the letter read.
The rally will be addressed by party President Mr. Hakainde Hichilema and his Vice Dr. Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba.
“We are also aware that in the recent past including during the state of emergency period, your office allowed other political parties to hold such meetings, and therefore, it is our sincere hope that the same will be applied on us,” it said.
“By this notification to your office, we therefore confirm to the public and relevant stakeholders promoting democracy both within and outside our country that as a party (UPND), we will be holding this rally.”
It’s time to work. Politics aside.
Why should they not hold a rally when ECL is also campaigning even before kids in the hospital.

Dr Chilufya told Journalists in Lusaka that the affected compounds are Mazyopa, Kabanana, Chipata and SOS village where the majority of the residents are in informal settlements and depend on boreholes to access water for domestic use, including drinking.

The last time a rally was planned in Chilanga, last month or so, upnd thugs run amok and started beating innocent people who absconded their rally. Would iy be prudent for ZP to allow this rally considering recent happenings?? It is a democracy and it is their right, but is it in order to allow a known hoodlums to assemble in the name of democracy?? Kanyama has the largest bantustan population in Lusaka, that is why it is always preferred by the upnd leadership. But then the question arises, is this a time for political rallies?? upnd has 54 mps, a third of parliament, capable of constituting a quorum to run the house, wouldn’t it be right to use these numbers to effect development and progress through this cardinal institution??? There is so much poverty in Zambia that these so called Rallies are crafted to incite public outcry and possible rise against a sitting government. Bwana President even in so called advanced democracies the institutions tasked to administer public order do scrutinize the unwritten motives of such gatherings. WHERE IS OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT – SPECIAL DIVISION. I do not think the police have insightful capacity to see through these maneuvers by UPND. Please manage the STATE AFFAIRS for PUBLIC GOOD
What happened in Chilanga is a spec of the ice berg; If the POLICE cannot manage to police this rally then let the CONVENORS make a written undertaking that should there be loss of life and/or violence they will be accountable and face prosecution – NO TWO WAYS ABOUT IT. This is Law!
