Market shelter to be constructed for street vendors in Ndola

Share

Ndola Central Member of Parliament Emmanuel Mulenga says K350 thousand will be spent towards construction of a market shelter for street vendors who were removed from the streets following the outbreak of cholera.

Mr. Mulenga said the funds were initially meant for the construction of a police post in Hillcrest but have since been diverted towards the market shelter.

He said the new market will be constructed using Constituency Development Funds (CDF) and will accommodate about 400 vendors.

Mr. Mulenga stated that the Patriotic Front administration is a pro-poor government and his capacity as MP has decided to divert the money in order to construct an alternative trading shelter for street vendors.

The law maker was speaking when he toured the proposed site for the new market shelter in the Central Business District(CBD).

Mr. Mulenga added that the construction of the new market shelter will help street vendors trade in a conducive and safe environment.

He noted that government is aware of the problems faced by street vendors therefore it will work round the clock to ensure that an alternative trading area is established.

Mr. Mulenga has since appealed to street vendors to bear with government as they try to look for alternative solutions for them.

  1. Doesn’t the DMMU in the Vice President’s Office have money budgeted for for emergencies? Why are you redirecting funds?

  2. GIVE THE CONTRACT TO COMPANIES WHO KNOW HOW TO CONSTRUCT MODERN MARKET SHELTER WHICH ARE NOT EYESORES. STEEL AND GLASSWORK MAKE MODERN AND ATTRCTIVE MARKET SHELTERS WITH ELECTRICITY POWER POINTS FOR MARKETEERS TO PLUG IN THEIR TILLS.

  3. Will it not attract audit queries? That money was meant for a police post but it is being diverted to construction of the market. As a member of parliament, you need to understand that certain expenditures have fallen into Auditor General’s report because of insufficient consultancy. You need to do your home work before diverting those funds for other projects.

  4. MINESTONE CONSTRUCTION is one good company that has a good reference in construction works, Why not give them such contracts.

  5. Seems they have to copy ideas from Facebook posts to come up with these initiatives. I know of a lady who had these initiatives she posted outlining what must be done. And here it is. They should follow her recommendations in keeping Zambia clean.
