UPND blames electoral violence for its poor showing in the By-Elections for Wards

United party for National Development (UPND) Secretary General Stephen Katuka has attributed the poor performance of the party in the by elections to reports of violence that were recorded during the voting period in selected parts of the country.

Mr. Katuka alleged that there were also cases of electoral malpractice and the party has since reported the matter to the conflict management team.

The UPND Chief executive officer said that the party is going to re-strategize for the next by elections.

He said although the results were not impressive, the UPND has not been shaken and it is still popular and remains strong on the ground.

And National Democratic Congress Secretary General Mwenya Musenge says the performance of the party in the just ended by election is average because it has only been in existence for six months.

Mr. Musenge however said the party plans to write to the Electoral Commission of Zambia following reported acts of violence in the run up to the by elections.

He has also said the party will soon have a meeting to identify individuals who will participate in the next by elections.

Meanwhile New Congress Party President Peter Chanda has congratulated the PF for winning most of the by elections and penetrating the UPND strongholds.

Mr. Chanda has since urged the UPND and NDC to go back to the drawing board because the voting has shown that the PF is still the people’s choice.

Meanwhile, Chief Government Spokesperson Dora Siliya has said that the ruling Patriotic Front(PF()’s victory in the 12 of the 16-local government by elections is a testimony of the confidence people have in President Edgar Lungu’s administration.

Ms. Siliya further said that the triumph shows that Zambians are tired of unreasonable debates by opposition political parties but want development. She has told ZNBC News that Zambians have spoken through the ballot that debates like the nationality of the President are retrogressive.

Ms. Siliya who is also Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services said that the results show that Zambians want to move with the development agenda and will not entertain opposition political leaders with a personal agenda.

She has congratulated citizens for being wise enough to read in between the lines and differentiate serious political parties from those carrying a personal agenda.

And The Patriotic Front has said that the outcome of the by-election held on Tuesday shows that the ruling party is still the most popular party in the country.

PF Secretary General Davies Mwila said that Zambians have reaffirmed their confidence in the ruling party after the party defended all its seven seats and scooped five seats out of the nine which were held by the opposition UPND in the just ended by elections.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka yesterday, Mr. Mwila said the results are a clear signal that the people of Zambia have confidence in the leadership of President Edgar Lungu.

Mr Mwila also assured those who did not vote for the PF that the party through its councilors will work hard to provide service delivery to them.

Mr. Mwila said the PF will now build on the huge mobilisation success of the bye election campaign to sell its policies to Zambians.

He also congratulated the Electoral Commission of Zambia for delivering free and fair elections.

And Copperbelt Patriotic Front Members of Parliament have hailed voters in the region for giving the ruling party a resounding victory in the Kasunswa and Luapula Wards by elections.

Provincial MPs Caucus Chairperson Evans Chibanda says the outcome of the elections is a true picture of how strong the party is on the ground.

Mr. Chibanda has told ZNBC News that the Copperbelt Province will for a long time remain a PF stronghold.

He said the electoral victory recorded by the party in various parts of the country where ward by elections took place yesterday, is a clear demonstration that the PF is the only party with a national character.

And PF Copperbelt Province Chairperson Stephen Kainga has thanked the electorate for their massive and continued support towards the ruling party.

Mr. Kainga said the PF in the region is growing and has become the only party with an attractive package for national development.

The PF has scooped thirteen out of the sixteen ward by elections held on Tuesday, including in opposition strongholds such as Western and North Western Provinces.

  1. Show maturity and accept a result to show you are a party that realises in competition thee is winners and losers.

    Not whiners and losers.

    Not impressed with them here.

    Thanks

    • No strategy – UPND have failed to address issues affecting the grassroots- their MPs are in Parliament just to collect gratuity, drive luxury SUVs and be paid abnormal allowances and salaries! Their leadership are concerned with character assassination inorder to hurt their political opponents-they have no heart for Zambians! Bad state of Prisons, poor maize prices-yet mealie meal prices go up, roads in towns remain pathetic! Sometimes it requires a sound minded opposition to raise issues but to deliberatly avoid to tackle these issues so that things get worse makes you part of the problem and people will see through you! The only opposition leader that has done this is Peter Sinkamba! Go Green in 2021! If Macron can do it in France it can be done even here in Zambia! Vote Green Party for…

    • I dont understand UPND but i think it is for good. sometimes god makes people do become so self centered so that they cant see their mistakes and keep failing. Keep it up UPND u r right.

    • Learn to take defeat with dignity in politics. Otherwise, the voter constituency will never change the belief that you are problem child party with a long way to maturity.
Freely we have advised yet you have missed the fillers that those subnormal kids you have hired for hatred and all kinds of incendiary propaganda are a serious liability.

Demons have taken over the UPND. Mazoka must be turning at Kumalende. Zambians are conservative in faith.they don’t share the ticket of such corrosive hatred period. Your popularity will remain on keyboards.

    • BEMBAS SAY “INSONI EBUNTU” AND ” UWAWA TABULAKABEPESHO”
      ==========================
Just listen to these Under 5 cry babies. Indeed, they do not know whether they are coming or going. Just a bunch of politically unschooled stooges and goons.
      Peace of advise:
You UPNDEADs don’t seem to get it. Politics of maligning your neigbors and insults do not put pressure on the ruling party, offer the country’s much needed checks and balances, sway voters to vote for you nor add value to democratization.Your party, which I perceive, as a terror squad should be seeking to improve and embarked on a continuous improvement strategy. Policies entrenched in your manifesto should be the corner stone for your political and social improvement arguments not tribal stunts and defamation. UPNDEADs are a…

    • …disgrace and disservice to mother Zambia. So what are you gonna do? Petition all lost polls? Amazing!!!!

    • 2020vision I agree with you 100%. These guys don’t even have an idea on how to be an opposition political party. Do they see how sharp and active the EFF of South Africa is. They keep the ANC on their toes on various issues affecting the people of that country, but here awe sure these guys cant even speak for us when we see the PF doing wrong all they care about is Money and Gratuity as you’ve rightly put it

    • We are in the know that PF ain’t gonna last forever but our worries as a peaceful people are calm because the Almighty God will raise a credible party to takeover from PF. Certainly not the UPNDEADs. They have lost all important polls and arguments in the land on account of their seemly untutored “portional sympathy grounded votes” an allien approach to Zambian politicking image. The political and lingual nuances of life preached by double h and his gang in Zambia leaves much to be desired. They portray and foretell disdain and unparalleled suffering for the nice people of the land if by mistake the rose to the country’s helm; God forbid.

    • Am not PF but this is nonsensical. UPND needs a complete overhaul. Stuck with the same captain for over 15 yrs and this is the reason why 2021 will be a replay of what has just happened. UPND will lose badly..worse than 2016

    • How can we win elections in the current political climate? When we want to tour the country and meet the voters, we need permission. Many times these permits are denied. HH is still recovering from the experience and time he spent in Mukobeko. Kambwili….i will not even start with him.

  2. Pwa Pwa Pwa Poo!! Done and dusted. HH should restrategize if any meaningful ground is t be cover at grassroot level. Also, Kambwili’s NDC is a spoiler in the game. Too bad for UPND.

  3. Life and death “crook or hook” electrol wins.
Realistically PF won 8 fare and square but the violence and dark arts tactics are what will lead to its downfall.
    Congratulations PF for your victories.

  4. Yeah that’s right ,if you can’t play tennis you blame the racket or if you’re a poor farmer you blame the tools.

  5. UPND and HH are good at wining on paper. They claim to be most popular but it goes the other way round. Zambians can not vote for agents and friends of the devil. Congratulations ZAMBIA.

  6. This under 5 party has no shame and strategy. When PF is mobilising its structures, they are busy with petitions of the previous election. Please go for a convention and elect leaders.

  7. Katuka spare us. How can you explain the 9,980 votes by your candidate in a single ward? What about the PF cadres injured by your cadres? Who controls NWP? Just admit your strategy of using hate speech is not working.

  8. Life in Zambia at the moment is at the hardest point. I mean prices of essential goods and services are sky high and keeps going even higher yet we have opposition parties who somehow miss all this! Campaigning and winning against this PF should be very easy because just the economic situation itself puts them at a disadvantage. This should be the message and song of the opposition and tell the people how better off they will be with you in power. Not looking down on the voters like they are f.ools for voting for the other side. Secondly, how many voters are the opposition gaining from the so many fights they are engaged in with PF?? Every fight must have a direct impact on the ground and the grass root must identify with you as their saviour. Is this happening all its for personal gain??

    • @FDD for 2021, people would rather go hungry that be at war. If you are talking about hunger, I am sure you should be talking about people in towns, otherwise people in rural areas have food all the year. People would rather sleep peaceful than stay awake whole night for fear of being killed any time. People have realized this. The actions from the opposition party clearly shows who they are, if voted into power, citizens wont criticize them as they do now to PF. So do not be surprised. Come 2021 PF will win overwhelmingly. My advise to UPND is to go for a convention where elections for new party leaders should be conducted. Mark my word, there will be change in this party.

  9. They are never short of excuses. A typical rehearsal for the 2021 elections after being thumped again. It will be excuse after excuse. When will you losers concede defeat? By the way UPND, don’t blame Rogan. She had nothing to do with your dismal performance even in your own bedroom. Five out of nine seats in UPND strongholds is no mean achievement for PF. Continue singing impeachment and nationality of the President. Meanwhile, PF is laying the ground work for a 2021 runaway victory.

  10. Blame game! If the cause of the whitewash defeat is violence, then UPND shares the blame. Mwanza ward violence in Monze almost caused postponement of by-election but ECZ urged parties involved to resolve amicably. Whose stronghold is Monze in SP?
Put in place both short and long term strategic plans for the good of the party, delink the party from HH cult personality to stand as separate entity. As things stand now HH and the party are inseparable.
Failure to do that, then buckle your belts, the road ahead is extremely bumpy and might make you career off the road and become extinct before your appointed time.

  11. The best thing the UPND should do is study all the elections they have lost and find out the real reason the keep losing. Otherwise very soon if one types the word “lose” in Google or any other search engine we will be getting suggestions like “do you mean UPND”. How can the so called intelligent people lose so many times to illiterate dull people?

    • You have killed me.I am laughing my lungs out now.Wow! Incredible creativity. You definitely deserve a gold medal.Simply hilarious.

  12. There was violence and intimidation on the opponents by the ruling PF.So all these victories are null and void. If the campaigns and the voting were conducted in a peaceful atmosphere the results could have been accepted. I personally do not accept the results. They must be nullified

  13. HH is living in phool’s paradise. …on Sunday on his way for a campaign rally in Kalulushi as his motorcade entered Kitwe disobeyed or traffic rules by not stopping at red traffic lights, men hanging out from vehicles and showing no respect for other road users. It’s childish things like this that make feel he’s popular. They made a lot of noise with their stoopid sirens.

  14. Congratulations to PF Party and it’s leadership you have proved once again that you are still people’s choice. For other parties that performed below their expectations please accept the choice of people and show maturity by forecasting now on putting the house in order. T

  15. The main reason HH wont rule this country is that he does not like intra party democracy, No convention UPND will be doomed in 2021

    • If HH won an election, five years later he would do a Kabila and claim that the country is too broke to hold an election because of the debts incurred by the previous PF regime!

  16. What amazes me is UPND keep on doing same things ,i.e;going into same rejected leaders HH’s team but hope for different results, how possible?UPND MUST BE BOLD ENOUGH AND TELL HH THAT BWANA ITS CLEAR ZAMBIANS DO NOT WANT YOU-SO STEP ASIDE-PERIOD!!!President Edgar Lungu never campaigned in any ward while HH&Kambwili,GBM camped in those wards ( saying trash instead of giving hope to Zambians) but still lost terribly.if HH cant convince few Zambians at ward level to vote for UPND,how can he convince voters at national level?WITH HH ON TOP IN 2021,UPND WILL 100% LOSE TO PF-MARK MY WORDS!!we live with people and hear their views everyday-so PF is still loved!!!LET PF JUST CONTINUE DEVELOPING MOTHER SERIOUSLY AND GOOD RESULTS WILL FOLLOW PF LEADERS ACROSS ZAMBIA!!

  17. Nkombo whats wrong with you, i said it time and time again. Remember you are the designated leader of our party. The moment you ascend to/take responsibility of UPND 2021 believe me, you are the next 7th Zambian President. Mark my words.

  18. Great work for great party,UPND ati you popular on the ground, which ground are you popular on,yes southern no one will refute that but other you are loosing it.Wrong diagnosis always leads to wrong remedy. Just Accept that you not popular.

  19. PF will continue winning these elections because you cant have a situation where Mulongoti is alone in the party, Nason Musoni is alone, Muliokela is alone, Tayali is alone, Siwale is a lone party as well, NDC only has Kambwili, Eric Chanda and Musenge, Chipimo is alone in Narep, FDD only has Mtayachalo and Nawakwi after Antonio Mwanza left, Wnter Kabimba also is a lone man party and even the new socialist party will only have Musumali and Mmembe. And i dont mean spokes persons or vocal people in these parties, i mean real membership. Wake up you fragmented chaps and form a formidable party or simply dissolve, evaporate or freeze and join UPND. There is nothing like ideologies in Africa, just wake up and do the needful. You are busy wasting our time crying foul each time you lose elections

  20. Well done PF. These cry babies shall forever mourn sighting reasons that they think are material enough to cause nullification of the results. In Nigeria there is a saying that ” even if you dance in water, your enemies will accuse you of causing dust”. We are not surprised the UPND have that as reason for the loss of their strong holds. Much as we do not entertain violence, it cannot be totally eradicated just like corruption cannot. Extent or levels come into consideration. Have the UPND forgotten the past mass movement of people from their party to the PF? Do they not realize that the conduct of their leader contributes to these losses?

  21. I thought they would say the election results were rigged anyway congrats pf I see social cash transfer played a role

  22. The UPND has always blamed somebody else for their consistent poor performance in elections. Until they look into their style of politics they will continue to be a regional party only supported on tribal appeal. And anyway, who would wish to be led by Hichilema? He lacks leadership skills, he’s only good at taking advantage of others to illegally accumulate wealth.

  23. It is only those sheepish villagers that the PF can entice with cheap chibuku and tuma K200 to vote for them, not here in town where we are well informed.

  24. UWA WA TA BULA KABE PESHO

UPND Secretary General Stephen Katuka has ATTRIBUTED the poor performance of the party in the bye elections to VIOLENCE during the voting. But he says the party is going to re-strategize for the next by elections. So which is which? Ba Katuka, you have correctly identified the lack of strategy as the cause, why you now blaming VIOLENCE?

NDC Secretary General Mwenya Musenge says the performance of the party in the just ended bye election was average because the party has only been in EXISTENCE FOR SIX MONTHS. But why are you PLANNING TO WRITE to the Electoral Commission about reported acts of VIOLENCE.

    • You are asking about restrategizing? Katuka means they will export violence that charecterized Mwanza Monze to other areas.

  25. Pharaoh and hh are one and same , God has hiden hh heart such that he can’t realize wat Zambian pipo want in a leader and wat th they want , its clear for now its time for pf like it or not others. 2021 u will cry even more

  26. I for one I have liked it that way. Let the PF take the full responsibility of the country’s affairs for now so that come 2021 there won’t be complaints for failing to manage the country’s affairs due to the mixture of ideologies if UPND was so be responsible for other sectors of this country. Secondly, it is very logic that if a certain political party is in power, people will pretend to like them just for survival but lets wait for the true picture when general elections comes.

  27. WHY A TONGA PRESIDENT CAN BE A DANGER TO ZAMBIA’S PEACE, THIS IS A WARNING!!!

    By Hamweene Mpande

[Disclaimer, the views expressed in this article do not represent those of Zambezi Reporters but the author’s)

Since the formation of UPND in 1998 by Anderson Mazoka, the Tonga speaking people of Southern Province have always voted for a Tonga candidate.

The first time Mazoka vied for presidency in 2001, all Tongas lumped their votes on him because he was their tribesman.

When Mazoka was leading Levy Mwanawasa of the MMD in 2001, Tongas took to the streets and celebrated his (Mazoka) imaginary victory.

Some Tongas went to an extent of closing down public offices and illegally taking over offices. They shared positions and plotted to deal with non – Tongas who were…

    • Not forgetting Macha Chilemema’s misconduct at Znbc. He took over the studios shouting ” we’re now in charge. …” I’m sure all Upnd cadres have deliberately forgotten that incident. It’s a pointer to what a Tonga lead government can do.

  28. Imagine if the ward with the deadlocked results had gone the PF way. ECZ would have been called all sorts of names by now. I am still waiting to hear one of them appreciating the seat given to them by ECZ.

  29. Even with all the allegations of corruption, natianality etc.The Leadership of ECL and PF is much more appreciated.
The Cambridge formula could not be applied in the so called strongholds this time around.
Kambwili, Kalaba, and lucky must be cursing themselvesas the dynamics are not looking good for them.
Those MPS who wanted to get a few coins to support the impeachment process must think twice.
This has been a litmus test.

  30. Upnd is a party so full of negativity. From their leader, to GBM, to Katuka, to Nkombo, to the whole lot of them. Just grim vibes from them day in day out. A sickening party, is all.

  31. That PF has won in supposed UPND strongholds should send Badala & Co. back to drawing board! In 2021, PF won’t need ECL to win but just a saleable candidate…

  32. Childish talking to the former Ivory Coast coach: “Coach, you could have won this game, you were robbed!”
Coach, “We created a lot of chances but we lost. Who robbed us?”
Childish, “By the referee!” Coach, “How?” Childish, “He should have sent one or two players who roughed up Gervinho but only gave you a penalty! You must report the referee to the UN!”
Coach, “To FIFA, you mean?” Childish, “No! to the UN! As a soccer fun and future Zambian president I will write the UN on your behalf!”
    Coach, “Childish, that is childish!”

  33. I think Kambwili is very clever. He’s has sensed that if lost his seat in Roan he would not regain it. Being a Kabova he’s able to sense the mood on the ground and not social media like certain people.

  34. How do you lose in your stronghold, when you campaigned there yourself as president of the UPND? hahahahaha. Just have a convention and elect a new cast of leaders.

  35. I think UPND leaders must quickly accept reality if they are to strategize properly. First, UPND must realize that the unwarranted verbal attacks, acrimony and the noise that they have made right from the time Lungu won the 2016 elections have made Zambians resent HH as most Zambians now believe that HH is the real danger to our National peace. At least with all the allegations of corruption against PF, almost making the country ungovernable, surely UPND should have swept all the 16 seats. All the allegations of violence are nothing but a scapegoat. It won’t help running away from reality. It’s the people themselves who voted; violence did note vote. I know brother Mwimba won’t stomach this but it is naked truth.

  36. I hope this has nothing to do with Janet Rogan this time. HH, what do u have to say, are u going to complain to UN again that Janet Rogan has assisted PF to rig the byelection again

  37. There is a so-called political analyst who insists that upnd won the last by-elections on the basis of the number of people who cast their votes. He is proud that upnd scooped over 9000 votes in one ward. That’s very shallow thinking. Even in football, you don’t win a match by just playing well but by scoring goals. The fact is pf trounced upnd in five of the nine seats in upnd stronghold areas while pf won all the seats in its strongholds, losing nothing to the opposition.

  38. My Point@28 Don’t be fooled,i am in town and i can see right through your President,he is horrible. I am sure a lot of other town dwellers can see what i see in your president. It has nothing to do with chibuku.

  39. Ask people from SP why they like HH,they will tell you that, that man has money.
UPND can be transformed if these guys can be released from the party,
HH, G NKOMBO,S KATUKA and J MWIIMBU.I tell these 2 laywer have never been good
to the party.UPND tell Anglo America not to interven into our political affairs.UPND IS
FINISHED. (Q)What is UPND? (A) Its is a political party found in the Sourthern part of
Zambia with the ideology of Tribe leader as a President.
