Opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has called on Zambians to keep asking questions about the purchase of 42 fire trucks at US$42 million.

Mr. Hichilema said it is important that citizens don’t lose sight of the important questions of why the state decided to spend 42 million on the procurement of fire trucks.

He said the commencement of a court process involving the six who were arrested when they staged a protest against the fire trucks deal offers a chance for citizens to keenly follow the court process as a way of getting answers about the scandal.

Mr Hichilema along with UPND Vice President Geoffrey Mwamba attended the bail hearing for musician Pilato who was arrested last week when he returned home having fled the country fearing for his life.

Pilato was detained last week after he returned home from South Africa, where he had spent four months.

The controversial musician left Zambia after receiving threats from PF cadres over his hit song “Koswe Mumpoto” which was viewed as accusing President Edgar Lungu and his Ministers of being corrupt.

Pilato’s trial along with five other activists accused of staging an illegal protest outside parliament last year, is due to start on Friday. They have all pleaded not guilty.
Magistrate Mwaka Mikalile said she was convinced that Pilato’s life was in danger and that the musician was justified in fleeing Zambia.

“I have had the opportunity to watch the video that he tendered before court. His life was indeed threatened and the police did not do anything,” said Mikalile. “The threats ought to have been dealt with by the police”.

Mr. Hichilema told Journalists that he was in court “to show support to citizens in difficult situations like this”

“We await the outcome of this trial of the colleagues who have staked it to ensure that there is an explanation to the procurement of the fire tenders. We take this opportunity to invite all well meaning Zambians to take interest in this and many other cases,” Mr. Hichilema said.

  1. The people that protested leave much to be desired. I may be wrong here, but is it not that as citizen we are suppose to report to ACC?
HH has selective way of support. He does not talk about Fresher Siwale but supports Pilato, who at one time knelt before ECL, and this Miti woman.

    • You are wrong. It is DUTY of ICC not just to investigate, but also to prosecute. Unfortunately, ICC has become part and parcel of the corrupt government.

    • Not at all. The ship has sailed.

There is no reason for people to cleaning on to the past.

That was then. This is now

Fire tenders or not PF are the right party at the helm.

I know it, you know it and HH knows it.

      Thanks

    • That is where Zambians get it wrong because we are clueless of what we should stand for. Those who have insights are highlighting important things through articles or comments on the blog, but the majority just skim those contributions looking for words like “HH” or “UPND”, or criticize without trying to think through words.
Why on this earth would you criticize HH for supporting Pilato and not Siwale, your frustration ought to be directed to those who locked Siwale and Pilato. HH is doing his part, it’s you and me who need to play their part if you want to serve Siwale. So stop criticizing and start acting, that is the docility which Zambians suffer of.

    • Maliya, you are right and I saw that after posting – thanks for noticing it.

Is there anything else you have to say on the article?

      Yes I have a PhD

      Thanks

    • Mushota you want to launder the past! History makes us learn to avoid the same mistakes and improve our lot! However, even constructing a simple English sentence is a challenge for you. Try writing in your native Bemba or use Alexia (Google type)!

    • MB,

I can win with you. You love poking at me, I will not poke back this time.

Did you enjoy also celebrate the disgraceful scenes when the similar black girl like me married a Prince this past week.

She has a broken family, a divorcee, disowned by her family and had disgraced the loyal family.

It was all a sham, that is the truth from me, you didst want to hear.

The pastor was even worse and scared the royals

      You are welcome

      Thanks

    • HH FOR ONCE YOU ARE RIGHT
ZAMBIANS ALSO WANT TO KNOW HOW YOU HAVE STASHED AWAY IN THOSE PARADISE ISLANDS
AND WHAT WAS THE ACTUAL SOURCE OF YOUR WEALTH??

    • HH FOR ONCE YOU ARE RIGHT
ZAMBIANS ALSO WANT TO KNOW HOW MUCH YOU STASHED AWAY IN THOSE PARADISE ISLANDS
AND WHAT WAS THE ACTUAL SOURCE OF YOUR WEALTH??

    • He did talk about him (Fresher Siwale) I guess very quick at pointing fingers.Check with the mast newspaper…

    • @Danielle, What do you expect. He no longer has government contracts he used equally abuse. He will dead before 2021.

  2. Spoiled child with his fellow devil worshipers the massons trying to ruin Zambia. Your Amagedon agenda failed thinking Zambia will be ungovernable. Shame on you HH and your fellow devil followers.

  3. HH would have made a very good history teacher. He is still in 2016 and now he has made a small step towards the future and reached fire trucks story. In 2021 he will be talking about his loss in Chilanga. I am not in support of PF purchase of fire tenders. What I find silly is that UPND has enough members of parliament to challenge PF on whatever corruption they talk about on the streets and staging protests illegally. UPND MPs have enough to fight the public order act in Parliament that makes people spend weekends in jail but are busy wasting time with impeachment motions and pissing all over the place aimlessly. No wonder PF can do anything they like because they know the opposition is lost.

    • The Trucks cost one-third of what was paid out. Where did the balance TWO-THIRDS of the money which amounts to US$28 million go??

    • He is trying to copy Rick Ross who drastically slimmed. But if you take a close look at him, you discover that the whole body has slimmed except pa chinena is still the same.Obvious that is where Pilato was referring to koswe “mumpoto” ,mu chinena cha ba GBM.

    • The Trucks cost one-third of what was paid out. Where did the balance TWO-THIRDS of the money which amounts to US$28 million go??

    • Politics is politics . Let us not mix personal lives

Let’s not make fun of ones health over politics no no no no

Gbm and hh are good guys as human beings but not politician s .

As such let us argue with them politically .

    • The Trucks cost one-third of what was paid out. Where did the balance TWO-THIRDS of the money which amounts to US$28 million go??

    • @Chisenga,
The Trucks cost one-third of what was paid out. Where did the balance TWO-THIRDS of the money which amounts to US$28 million go??

  4. “Mr. Hichilema said it is important that citizens don’t lose sight of the important questions of why the state decided to spend 42 million on the procurement of fire trucks”.Well there is a million dollar question Mr under 5 which is even in the archives of SABC as to how you acquired your wealthy and why you are styling your names to Hakainde Hichilema instead of Sunny Chintombwa?

    • @******* ****,
The Trucks cost one-third of what was paid out. Where did the balance TWO-THIRDS of the money which amounts to US$28 million go??

    • @ Bra ya kwa Charmaine Musonda….Trucks were overvalued by GRZ whilst hotels and the mines/parastatals HH sold were also undervalued.Howver HH’s figures were cooked 99 times higher than the 42 million trucks….

    • @******* pako,
LOL- Your moronic response speaks volumes about your lack of capacity, and the question remains even stronger than before, i.e. Where did fugitive Lungu’s PF-Govt take the US$28 Million change from the fire-Tender purchase? Since he loves abnormal gifts, was he conned and bribed by a middleman (proxy) who is in turn funding terrorists as I explained @38 below? I am a Tax payer, and I want to know just as millions of tax-payers in UK whose money fund loans given to mother Zambia want to know.

  5. Great contrast between the sharp looking clean cut politicians and the raggedy disheveled activists. That tells who is abusing taxpayers funds.

  6. I like the way South Africans are managing the affairs of their country. When a President is found wanting he’s removed from office before his term officially ends. That’s the way it should be. How I wish all African countries were like South Africa. We elect these leaders to serve the interests of the nation, not their selfish interests

    • Zuma has 78 cases against him

People fail to take these 2 opposition leaders seriously because we know their activities

They are not as clean as they want to portray

    • @Independent voice. I share the same thoughts as you. South African Democracy gets stronger by the day. i love how the EFF have kept the ruling ANC on their toes

  7. My friend first you must understand how the system works in RSA. In RSA it’s the party that wins the majority that forms the presidency. The party will pick who’s going to be republican president which is more often than not that party’s president. Our system vests most of the power in the presidency because he’s elected as an individual. Having said that I can say if this applied to Zambia we would be removing presidents every week especially with the opposition such as HH who’s so desperate he can’t separate sense from nonsense.

    • The Trucks cost one-third of what was paid out. Where did the balance TWO-THIRDS of the money which amounts to US$28 million go??

  8. If those fire truck protests appealed to Zambians, there would have been hundreds or even thousands of people who could have left their everyday activities. But looking at the video, it was Pilato, Laura and less than 6 of their friends while the usual traffic congestion and pedestrians went about their normal lives; Sure looks like it is just a few disgruntled characters with personal issues. Add upnd to their court hearings, it all adds up. hh, Laura’s cartel and upnd have nothing to offer Zambians except their lust for plot 1for their benefit!!!

  9. You wondering what’s happened to GBM? He is under siege! Its really sad to see GBM being misled by HH whilst the rest of the country is moving on. Everything about HH and his club, UPND, is upside down. How possible is it that he has been allowed to make one tribe so poor in the name of tribe? Look, the guy has lost 5 times in general elections and yet the club he heads still cannot see that there is nothing left of them but skeleton of the once fat cow. No democracy, no convention, no other at top except him, mmmm? Since 2016, the country is making serious developmental strives but HH is crying on illusion! UPND is not what it was and it will never be. If the might MMD could just disappear like that, what more of UPND which is polarized to one tribe? Bane, those still in slumber, UPND…

    • @Malinso,
The Trucks cost one-third of what was paid out. Where did the balance TWO-THIRDS of the money which amounts to US$28 million go??

  10. contd
If the might MMD could just disappear like that, what more of UPND which is polarized to one tribe? Bane, those still in slumber, UPND lost its salt years back and its a useless club.

    • A political party only disappears after losing elections having been in power. Opposition political parties are resilient as they have nothing to lose. UPND is going nowhere

  11. We need people to demonstrate against eSwatini gate; Zesco $500m gate; Lusaka-Ndola freeway gate; etc;

  12. All political parties must disband and form one party with one president

If you dont pf will rule for the next 25 years

We need meaningful opposition and meaningful change

We dont want coming from pf into another pf

  13. Emmanuel Mwamba the PF cadre shanted at Zambian Embassy in South Africa spoke with an open mouth in front of cameras disputing that Pilato’s life was not threatened by his fellow thugs. Did Mwamba hear what the honourable judge said after watching the video? Will Mwamba reverse what he denied when he wanted to call Pilato and hoodwink him that he was a caring ambassador?

  14. Davis Chama was right
Tongas will one day lead this country. But this will be 100 years from now . The Central statistics office shows that for the Tongas to have enough numbers to provide a president , each man will have to marry three wives and have 8 Children in each one of them. This population will have to grow to a voting age of 18. If they reduce the voting age to 16, then Tongas will have a president in 2066

  15. Mmmmm OK comments from PF supporters are embarrassingly shallow mwebantu and this reflects the calibre of the empty heads leading the country. Leadership with no plan and supporters with no clue. Sad.

  16. Only a corrupt theif would sanction paying $42 million for 42 red scania trucks painted red and fitted with a pump then shamelessly go begging for an IMF bailout…….the true total cost is about $15 million for those 42 trucks…

  17. Because seriously anyone with a brain would not agree that those second hand 2009 model Scanias would go for a million dollars, that’s just madness and yet shockingly we have people who believe that. Surely would it be an insult to call such people dull and shallow? The trucks were insured for $250,000 dollars each. Is it normal to insure a million dollar asset for a quarter of the value? According to PF supporters, yes it is. The constitution tells us that a President must declare a gift above $1,000. Lungu is ‘gifted’ a huge piece of Land and keeps quiet about it. Was this wrong? Well according to brain boxes like BR Mumba and Zambian citizen, there was nothing wrong done. I ask again, in the face of this evidence, would it be an insult to label such people dull and shallow? In my…

  18. Zambians are docile and sheepish. These adjectives describes a Zambian best.He is a coward and likes talking a lot.A Zambian behaves like children of Israel who could not confront Goliath but were busy hiding in their caves.Talking should go with pragmatism. It is pointless talking when the nation has gone to the dogs. There are a lot of grey areas in the nation which need citizen participation but we have opted to keep silent. The only thing we know,as a nation,is talking from sunrise to sunset.People in leadership should not be free to embezzle and loot national coffers with impunity. We need to take them to task.

  19. Don’t trust a politician especially one in opposition. Remember how FTJ fought KK on “behalf ” of the Zambian worker? FTJ was detained several times by KK even removing him from the ZCTU chairmanship. We all thought we had hero in this man. But what happened when he and his fellow union leaders such as Newstead Zimba, Chitalu Sampa, Liato, Moonde, Nzoa etc?We all started missed KK because under FTJ the worker and all Zambians were completely neglected by these “heroes ” who were now a different ” nation “. They became worse than KK with several unsolved assassinations. …Paul Tembo, Penza, Wezi Kaunda and others. With his bitterness HH would spend his term sorting out “enemies ” instead of the economy.

    • So what has Lungu done to benefit the economy that has you so excited about this man’s leadership? Right now Bloomberg has released a report that the Zambian Eurobonds are the worst performing on the market so far and the Kwacha to dollar rate is above K10. What is it that inspires you about Lungu’s economic plan? Which area of the Zambian economy has achieved any growth under Lungu and PF? I honestly hope to get a coherent answer from you mudala.

    • So in short you also have no answer..You can’t even point at those overpriced substandard roads where the eurobonds were spent and where currently we have zero returns due to the fact that Zambia produces no goods it can export apart from copper. That’s why Lungus only message at rallies is HH and dancing. Smh

    • Mr Dudehate, do not demean other people’s opinions. You speak from ignorance just like all of us so don’t pretend to own all the knowledge.

    • Ndanje, your opinions lack basic common sense which is a huge problem. You never tackle any subject based on the points raised but raise other issues that are irrelevant. Right now I can bet you a million dollars if I asked you to justify the purchase of a second hand 2009 model Scania which is no longer being manufactured at a million dollars you will have no answer but still defend the price. Thats the problem with you PF supporters and that kind of thinking makes it difficult for us not to belittle you.

    • There you go again. ..only Upnd supporters have basic logic. All of us including you have a right to say things the way they see them. You want everyone to agree with you that Edgar has stolen when they haven’t actually proved it. You can’t see logic in others especially those you perceive to be PF sympathizers. One of the reasons Upnd can not win is pride….even in campaigning they choose which people to approach.

    • Ndanje, when we talk about Lungu stealing we bring in things like the fire tenders, ambulances, and right now the land ‘Gift’ and the personal guaranteeing of a $500 million loan which are factual. The problem is you never give arguments based on the specific things we complain about. Not even once. You have failed to justify the fire tenders and am not sure what proof you want with regards whether the One million dollars is justified for the purchase of a second hand truck. All I want from you is to tell me whether you believe those 2009 model Scanias really should have cost that much and why, chapwa.

    • And how do you expect us to see the logic in your debates when your logic involves saying that yes a million dollars for a second hand Scania is fine; yes an ambulance should cost $288,000 each; yes Lungu can receive a personal gift of land while on official business using my tax payers money; yes Lungu can personally guarantee a loan for $500 million, yes Ministers can continue functioning even when Parliament is dissolved, yes a dual carriageway from Ndola to Lusaka can cost over a billion dollars and much much more. Can a normal level headed Tax paying Zambian see any logic in this and cheer it on the way you do? All I have listed are not rumours, they have happened and it is sickening.

  20. Let’s forgot about Siwale, the man is eating his own porridge he deserves whatever he asked for. Coming to hh kachema, what answers are Zambians asking for if him (kachema)has time and again failed to provide us Zambians with the so called answers on the privatisation scandal. He should not claim to be an angel over the firetenders ,let him take his frustration else where . For me,let him waste his energy on door to door campaign in Chilanga but he shouldn’t cry foul after 5th June.

    • What do you have to say about the fire tenders though? Forget about HH he is nowhere in govt so his actions do not affect the livelihood of Zambians. Who were the policy makers during the privatisation scandal? It was Chiluba with bene Sata, those are the people you should have asked about the privatisation the time they were alive. Why do you PF supporters always fail to tackle the substance of a subject? HH is talking about over priced fire tenders so how is your response connected to the subject matter? See why us calling you shallow and dull is justified? It’s not an insult. Its like in class a Teacher asks ati “What happens to water when it is boiled?” PF response “Even you teacher there is no grass in your back yard and your shoes are Bata’

  21. We also still wonder how HH became rich.He has never explained to us to understand. How about starting with that one before we talk about the fire trucks?

    • He worked hard and made very sound investments over thirty years because he is intelligent. Now tell us how Lungu, a broke Lawyer and embezzler of K36,000 from a widow made almost the same amount of money HH made in thirty years in just two years. See why we think PF supporters are very dull? Not an insult, just a hard fact so no hard feelings hey? 🙂

  22. What i would like to see happen on public platform regarding the fire tenders, is for one of the parliamentary committees which we see going round interrogating parastatals , to do so with ZPA – the agency that superintended the buying process. grill those guys, or else linking the president is chasing a red herring. Yes, the pricing is ridiculous, but find out from the ZPA their rationale in making the decision – in fact, the parliamentary committee has the power to revisit all the other quotations that were there.
On the picture above, the one thing that is so obvious to me is the absence of Nevers mumba. did i miss out on something that happened viz-a-viz the trio ? they used to appear together so often.

  23. @ Ndanji Khakis, I agree. It ws very painful to see FTJ “outdo” KK once he got power. We need a constitution that will curtail presido’s powers and force him to hold a press conference at least once every qtr..,

  24. Dudelove, true wat we see is reflection of our society, brain dead citizens without exposure dancing while colossal resources r looted in daylight. How I wish cabinet was selected outside parliament so that MPs don’t have it all. Imagine how issue of 42 “wheelbarrows wud b queried in parley, police brutality, ambulances etc. It’s obvious wat Zed needs in ambudance is accountability, not copper, cobalt, Uranium or ” kangaroo court (oops, Concourt)…

  25. HH, your own are telling you cannot grow the party when those leaving are greater than the ones joining your party and reasons advanced are that you have been on the scene too long and also the FACT leadership has not revolved just as long. I for one,are not lured anymore by the same old song of corruption. I once said Meembe went to court to prove one leader’s wrong doings and you can only sing and rejoice over happenings to the people you call “our people” as if you own them. Bail is not freedom when it has conditions attached.

  26. What about paradise papers. Is paradise in heaven or earth?. Why did HH go to paradise before death?

  27. Absolutely, Zambians need answers over the 42/42 fire Trucks scandal. The Trucks cost one-third of what was paid out. Where did the balance TWO-THIRDS of the money go?

As a matter of fact, not just Zambians, but any well-meaning Tax-payer in developed Countries like here in UK, whose money funds loans and bonds given to mother Zambia, would like to know. Among other reasons, here is why:-
    – It is now a well-known fact that Terrorists who do us harm/wish to do us harm in UK/Europe/USA ‘tactfully’ use unsuspecting proxies to syphon and get some of their funding from the very Countries they bomb. So the real scary question is:- Was fugitive Lungu’s corrupt PF-Govt swindled by such a proxy and they are too dumb and greedy to realise it?
The TWO-THIRDS balance of the money amounts to…

    • Cont’d ….. amounts to US$28 million!!!. That is a lot of money!!. Where did it go?

I hope and trust CIA and Mi5 are on this case.

  28. Ladies and Gentleman issues of corruption we should be on the same page. We all know that a country like Zambia does not have the luxury to buy a fire truck at $1 million dollars. The other thing we are told is the relationship with the president of the person who bought these trucks on behalf of the government. We should with sober minds ask intelligent questions like shouldn’t we have bought what we wanted at a more cheaper price? Was the tender procedure adequately followed? Who authorized the payment? Was this a priority over building more hospitals and school or make improvements to our UTH water system? HH these are issues you should run with not ordinary citizens like Pilato because you can come to do the same things also.

  29. personally I will take HH seriously when he starts championing constitutional and electoral reforms. Because from 2016 instead of crying over the petition by now we would have corrected the issue of 14 days. Does it include weekends or not? We should have sorted out the referendum. Meaning government would be sued for failing to take water to Kanyama or other areas. You defeated the referendum and you ended there. If we improve on electoral rules and the constitution we will hold elections in a more peaceful environment. Champion issues appointment for elections chairperson, police chief, parastatal CEOs and the like should be through parliament to avoid abusing them during elections. Alas you are still crying over 2016 sir, WHY?

  30. One sold our Mines for a song ( Hakainde Hichilema ), another bought 42 fire trucks( edgar Lungu). Who led to Zambia’s economic downfall again?

    • @Nzelu,

LOL – Your vain attempt to change the subject is noted. Is this the best you can do for your Country? Your moronic insults at Ba late President Sata by indirectly accusing him that he was afraid, too afraid to prosecute HH that is why he did not prosecute (after his investigations that drew a blank), clearly shows you do NOT know why Ba Sata was nicknamed him King Cobra. How much of Ba Sata’s character do you know? Mudala Sata taleshinshikila awe. Ask GBM what King Cobra did when GBM mistreated his wife.

So, the question remains, i.e. Where did fugitive Lungu’s PF-Govt take the US$28 Million change from the fire-Tender purchase? Was he conned and bribed by a middleman (proxy) who is in turn funding terrorists? As I explained @38 above? I am a Tax payer, and I want to know…

    • What misdirecting? Sata hid Zamefa money in bank accounts, he too was not clean. How have I changed the subject when I brought up both president Lungu’s and HH’s dirty deeds? If your brain is intelligent it shall ask you why you are so defensive of he who sold Zambia to the very people that were it’s colonialists?

    • Wow, even you actually believe HH sold the mines? Were they his to sell ayi? And here I was thinking the mines belonged to the government.

  31. I don not know which Zambians HH is talking about. At-least Mwale told you through a parliamentary statement that each cost $1 million. But you HH have not told the us Zambians what you did with our mines. You always refer us to ZIC or ZDA. Ma, ma show us the signal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  32. Is it possible for one man to sell the entire zccm.where was gvt.stop talking things you don’t know

  33. h.h, mwaice bu underfive tabwakapwe. Whom are you trying to butter face? I have told you before that when you talk about corruption in government half the signatories or senior government officials are your members upnd. Even the fire tenders deal if it was corrupt, half the senior officials who run with the tender and who sit on the tender committees and award contracts are most probably upnd. We know that things do not run well in the civil service because of the same upnd civil servants trying to sabotage everything to ensure their tribesmate becomes president. Meanwhile they want to enrich themselves through corruption.
h.h you are lucky that the current government leadership is civil, otherwise a purge of the civil service would remove all those tribal saboteurs from upnd. Ackson…

  34. Ackson sejani in 2006 introducing h.h on the political scene……”…only………shall…lead upnd..” end of quote.

  35. …nothing has changed since 2006. In fact you could say that all Zambia’s current problems can be traced to “upnd 2006” . H.h cannot hide away from that no matter what he says or does, “upnd 2006″ is in the public domain and indelible forever”.

  36. The question remains even stronger than before, i.e. Where did fugitive Lungu’s PF-Govt take the US$28 Million change from the fire-Tender purchase? Since he loves abnormal gifts, was he conned and bribed by a middleman (proxy) who is in turn funding terrorists? As I explained @38 above? I am a Tax payer, and I want to know just as millions of tax-payers in UK whose money fund loans given to mother Zambia want to know.

    • @BRABUS: IT IS LIKE BUYING BREAD ON THE MARKET. THE COST OF BREAD RANGES FROM K5 TO K12 DEPENDING ON YOUR TASTE , FLAVOUR. YOU CAN CHOOSE TO BUY VERY CHEAP OR VERY EXPENSIVE BREAD DEPENDING ON YOUR POCKET, LOVE OF QUALITY, TASTE ETC. THE GOVERNMENT BOUGHT US THE 42 TRUCKS AND US FROM THE 6.5 PROVINCES ARE VERY, VERY HAPPY. AND FOR AS LONG AS US FROM THE 6.5 PROVINCES ARE HAPPY, THATS ALL. OUR APPROVAL RATINGS FOR THE PF WAS SHOWN IN THE LAST COUNCIL BY ELECTIONS AND WILL ALSO BE EVIDENT IN THE CHILANGA BY ELECTION. THE MAJORITY WILL RULE. YOU CAN CONTINUE EATINGC YOUR SOUR GRAPES.
