UNZA harboring criminals-Lusambo

Share

Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo has charged that the University of Zambia Great East road campus is harboring criminals going by some students riotous behavior.

Commenting on Saturday’s riots that erupted following a 10 minute power failure at the institution, Mr Lusambo said that type of behavior is synonymous with criminals and not intellectuals.

He said he will be having a meeting with UNZA management on Monday to get to the bottom of the issue and identify those that took part in the riots so that they could be dealt with.

“As Minister responsible for Lusaka Province, I wish to firstly apologize to the residents of Lusaka and specifically to those motorists who were caught up in the disturbances occasioned by the unruly students. I further wish to sternly warm the students that I will not tolerate such levels of irresponsible behavior in the province,” Mr Lusambo said.

“As intellectuals, the students are expected to understand and appreciate the level of investment that the Zambian people through government are making to enable them stay in school. They should therefore not exhibit their ingratitude using such archaic methods. I wish to point out that road protests by student populace is an old and tired method of expressing displeasure.”

He added, “In the year 2018, students world over are not expected to be running battles with police, burning tires and destroying private and public property. Students are expected to be engaging the university management and other authorities on a round table whenever disagreements emerge. This is a modern and proven way of resolving issues. Power outages occur everywhere even in developed countries and could be caused by a variety of reasons. What the students ought to have done, was to engage relevant authorities to find out what caused this particular power failure.”

Mr. Lusambo observed that rushing to be streets to protest over a less than 10 minute power disturbance shows the kind of society that Zambia is breeding.

“We are breeding a society of stupid, spoilt, entitled and irresponsible children who do not take time to analyze issues before they act. It now remains the duty of parents and guardians to inculcate national values, ethics, patriotism and principles in the minds of these children. Please help society by raising responsible children before you send them out to university,” Mr. Lusambo said.

“Going forward, my office will work closely with law enforcement agencies and university management to ensure that unruly students are rooted out of campus. The Government of His Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu desires a harmonious learning environment and will not condone stupidity from those that are receiving assistance in the pursuance of their education. I therefore wish to warn the students that as Minister for Lusaka Province, I will not tolerate such types of actions that seek to disturb public peace and order.”

    • “Government harboring criminals”…

Lusambo has forgotten what he did to Major Kachingwe. He went into exile in his native Congo. Now that he is back under corrupt Lungu, he is even pointing fingers.

We all know who the real criminals are in Zambia. And the biggest one is that man that eats mangoes like he has just been released from prison, and dances in public every chance he gets.

    • The only place harbouring criminals is PF.
Having said that those unruly students must be punished severely for damage of innocent motorist’s property!
This cannot go on like this!

    • Really laughable this is what happens when you have no seen the inside of a uni lecturer theater ….even in the UK when kids from a poor neighbouring estates stumble on the university premises and see people reading books on the lawn they think everyone is crazy!!

  1. useless students! Why attack innocent people? Are they the ones in charge of power?Do you know how much it costs to generate power?Any way, this is the manifestation of uAndOWN legacy that of violence?Remember,on many occasions they boasted of their mapatizya violent formulae!!!

  2. students are not stupid, monk to demonstrate over loss of power for 10 min I doubt! there are some more issues unattended to at the camp! your job is to find out what it is

    • Dr Ngosa I agree with you – to use a 10 minute power outage as an excuse as to why the students rioted is trying to wash the core problem they are experiencing under the carpet.
However the students need to find other means of protesting their dissatisfaction – damaging property and vehicles is no way in which to express their greaviences !

    • @Dr. Ngosa
Actually students are stupid! If they weren’t they wouldn’t attack innocent people using the Great East Road, would they?

  3. This is why a degree obtained from unza is worthless worldwide. Just look at unza’s position on the universities world rankings it’s shocking. This is an institution where we expect intellectuals to come from, but instead we have criminals in the name of students.

  4. thats a signal to the Zambian corrupt PF gov that more demonstrations are coming national wide. The students demonstration was not because of the power interruption at the campus , its counter reaction of the way the way this country is being governed , a country of scandals everyday and the so called illegal president does not take any action o correct the situations ,to us its like his is part and parcel of these scandals . we just go on like this , something should be done to correct this thieving in the government. if its means rioting , we will do that so that we resurrect our brothers and sisters from these criminals running the country , the country is in wrong hands . just watch out for more riots , we are just demonstrations

  5. i said it a couple of weeks ago that we are strategizing and mobilizing remotely , we just cant go on like that with the way things are happening in Zambia , something should be done about it ,

  6. criminals are yourselves leaders in the government . u are a batch of thieves to the core . if u really have five senses , does it make sense to you to say the students rioted because of the 10 min power black out . thats not the trigger , a lot of factors behind those riots . this just the beginning . watch-out more demonstrations which even force agencies will fail to contain . see what happened in 1984 in UNIP food riots ,

  7. when pressure is building up it takes just a small creak to bast .there should be more to it than just power failure

  8. outside ZAMBIA very few people take degrees obtained at UNZA seriously these days. The recent graduates from UNZA are semi literate thugs who aren’t useful at all.

  9. no one is bold enough to advise Lungu to do the correct thing….. we have cowards and evil praiser for an individual….. Do you think Lusabmo can stand and challenge lungu….. imweeeee bonse mu PF ni b angwele
    PF is a greedy party

  10. If I was a Chief City planner for Lusaka I would plan that UNZA area so as its difficult for those students to mount an attack and make it easier for Riot Police to swarm them from all corners..design pavements away from the road and completely remove all rocks and borders from that area

  11. The Minister says he will engage UNZA management to establish the cause of this riot. On the face of it, it seems illogical that a ten minute power outage can result in a riot. There must be more to it and I take it that the said meeting will reveal other concerns. Overally, such riotous behaviour should be condemned.

I nevertheless do not subscribe to this culture of people veering off the topic at hand to bring in politics and names of people who are not at the centre of the issue. let the meeting expose the cause of the riots and accusations can then follow.

  12. SStone age!!!!!!!! KK, Chiluba, Mwanawasa, Lupia, Sata and ECL they all know it. Mwanawasa and EECL were once monks they know stone age very well and they particepated in it. Its intergeneration yyou cannot stop it. There are no criminals at UNZA, there are only monks. Please ask ECL you boss y Mr. Bowman he has the answers for UNZA rather than calling our children criminals.

  13. Those were just some few stupid students from UNZA. UNZA is one of the best Universities in this world. Those who have graduated from UNZA have gone to compete favorably at some of the best Universities in the World. A Degree from UNZA is recognised over the world. Check the institute of actuaries, Cambridge, Oxford etc.

UNZA has also produced presidents and prime Ministers locally and outside Zambia. This School is very powerful. It has also produced some of the best Medical Doctors. Those who think UNZA is not a good institution must be graduates from Makeshift schools and jealousy of the School.

  14. “As politicians, Lusambo is expected to understand and appreciate the level of investment that the Zambian people through government are making to enable him come to parliament. He should therefore not exhibit his ingratitude by fighting Kambwili on the premises. I wish to point out that violence against fellow humans by Lusambo is an old and tired method of expressing displeasure.”

  15. This is the only time I have agreed with Lusambo. He is right ,Power goes then you go and stone cars, ubupuba of the worst order

  16. In zambia people dont solve problems, we just bwata and bwata and Give excuse sfter excuse. This particular UNZA problem can affect anyone who happens to be driving along great east road, so lets all be practical here and brain storm how to get rid of this issue for ever. I personally think its very easy to solve.
    Here is how
We need a serious lawyer who can agree to work on contigent basis. He/she will meet and work for all the victims of this stone throw, and get them to sue UNZA for damages and demand serious compensation, among other things like mounting security cmonitoring devices and beefing up human security along great east road around UNZA whenever there is a likelihood of a viva happening. No one sues UNZA so they have not seen a reason to discipline their students. Just…

  17. My laughing disease (laughing gas) has come back! Just check HH’s former room when he came from the village. Maybe he is habouring HaJJs and HaSPakas there.

  18. Name calling, labelling, undermining, othering, and putting forth and defending narrow ideological agendas will not help anyone. Not at all. What we need is an issue-based brainstorming session or indaba to resolve the rote that has been taking hold at UNZA for years. It is irrelevant whether you’re a graduate of the University or from another institution. As long as you’re a Zambian, you’re affected personally or by association.

I’m a graduate of UNZA. I have what you might refer to as an insider’s perspective. This, however, is by far not exhaustive.

UNZA problems include but are not limited to underfunding of the University, serious drug abuse among students(this may not be unique to UNZA), sponsored violence by political forces, underfunding and sometimes nonpayment of…
