Leaders attending the 20th COMESA Summit have congratulated the new Secretary General of COMESA Ms. Chileshe Kapwepwe on her appointment to lead the largest economic community in Africa.
Led by the President of Madagascar and Chairman of the COMESA Authority, H.E. Hery Rajaonarimampianina, Heads of States and their representatives from all member States expressed their best wishes and support to Ms. Kapwepwe, a Zambian national, as she takes the reins of the regional bloc.
The leaders appreciated the outgoing SG Sindiso Ngwenya for his remarkable achievements during his more than three decades in the organization, 10 of them as Secretary General.
Mr. Ngwenya was recognized for designing many COMESA trade facilitation programmes and specialized institutions that are now highly rated internationally.
In his statement, President Edgar Lungu expressed confidence in Ms. Chileshe, to inspire and lead COMESA to sustained success as well as ensuring that the organization remains a strong force in Africa’s integration process.
“My government, as host of COMESA secretariat, is indeed delighted to have her as the first woman Secretary General of COMESA. Her competence and experience were among the key considerations which earned her this appointment, which was highly contested by equally competent candidates. Your prime responsibility now is to advance the region’s integration agenda and maintain the visibility of COMESA at regional continental and global level,” said President Lungu.
