E-commerce giant Alibaba’s Jack Ma is in Zambia for a private visit.

Ma who according to the latest Forbes China rich list has net worth of US$34.6 billion is in Mfuwe to sample some of Zambia’s wildlife.

He flew to Mfuwe from Johannesburg, South Africa where he was a special guest of that country’s leader Cyril Ramaphosa at the InvestSA conference last week.

It is not yet known how many days Ma would spend in Zambia and whether he is scheduled to meet any government leaders.

A prominent business figure, Ma is seen as a global ambassador for Chinese business and as such is frequently listed as one of the world’s most powerful people by Forbes.

On 10 September 2018, he announced that he will retire from Alibaba and pursue educational charity work, effective in one year.
Ma resigned from the position of the CEO of Alibaba Group and reportedly decided to eventually resign as Chairman to focus on his philanthropic work.

  1. Welcome to the real Africa Ali Baba feel at home .Its a shame Jack Ma is worth more than the entire GDP of Zambia so where did we fail?

    • Have only heard that he is the country through the social Media they despise and abhor so much, remember the social cash transfer and the examination leakages scandals ,they only came to be aware of what was going on in the country when social media outlets brought out the issues to the Public, they to preoccupied with by elections. He is not the first and last ,they come to view Zambian wildlife but spend the dollar in south Africa.

    • OVAL HEAD – You know why GBM has shifted his businesses down South to Zim and RSA but you choose to ignore it…..GBM is not Kaizer, Tasila and Amos who have only been rich through corrupt govt contracts he is a seasoned businessman, he was running GBM Milling when the UNIP regime was on his case.

    • GDP is a transaction concept.

No person is richer than Zambia. Just the South Luangwa Park and its environs of the Luangwa River, the Muchinga escarpment, the precious stones, and people are worth more than Jack Ma.

Think rather than regurgitate ad nausea.

  2. The guy started his business very simple and he is a very smart guy. I attended few business forums here in America where he spoke about how business should be done.

    • He has managed to be successful and very rich because the Chinese regime protected their own …Alibaba had no competition from outside, the Chinese never allowed the likes of Amazon in. If only the Africans would learn something from that as they have like the Chinese rape them and given them free access to their market.

    • @2.2 Jay Jay , SPOT ON , even the revered Dangote is largely a product of Nigerian protectionism BUT HERE IN ZAMBIA WITH THINK WHEN FOREIGNERS CONTROL EVERY ASPECT OF OUR ECONOMY THAT WE WILL GET ANYWHERE??

    • zambiaisours – exactly we on the other hand are good at not seeing our businessmen/women not succeed…Alibaba had access to 1 billion customers and Chinks barred the foreigners ie Google and Amazons when they tried to break that market….in Zambia will are doing the opposite killing off the small scale business with taxes and allowing cheap chink goods in 10 years time there will be no SMEs.

  3. Haha, the girl seated next to Jack Ma is clearly smitten by this Chinaman business genius. GRZ should invest its $$$ into a sovereign wealth fund into Jack Ma’s company instead of the misguided Zambia Airways revival.

  4. This is how rich people in true sense behave and conduct themselves with dignity and humility. Not this hyena called HH who thinks he stolen riches gives him the right to think he can president of Zambia.

  5. Some guys here have upbringing issues. Just how does one manage to bring HH into picture here. Its clear that these chaps above have big cuts from crime proceeding happening in government by PF and their leaders and even this Malinso thing should be part of the looting in Zambia now. Mulimbe because come 2021 people will show you the door. And it will be ugly I tell you.
    Disaster!!!!

  6. He flew in from RSA conference where he cut deals but Zambians are too docile …RSA has already cut deals with him they will have the factory and send you the finished products in Shoprite to buy whilst your dull leader Edgar is still singing about value addition…am sure even his holiday was booked via a Boer travel agency.

Copycat to a different level… the Chinese know how to perfect the art of copyright infringement and IP theft. This guy got rich by copying Amazon’s Jeffrey Preston Bezos, lifting his business practices and perfecting it with the help of Chinese government operatives. His resignation from Alibaba and into philanthropic work is yet another copycat of Microsoft’s Bill Gates. They never innovate partly because the govt bureaucracy stifles their thinking… but they are clever to and take advantage of sleepy low, docile Zambians and Africans.

Definitely he has money but I don’t respect him for stealing others’ IPs.

  8. Jack Ma’s success is about running a transparent business and ceating wealth in every country his company has set up operations. He has also decided to step down and appointed someone else to the top job. How many political leaders in Zambia or Africa would do that? People like Jack Ma know that after being at the top for many years there are always new people of doing the same or better job into the future.

  9. He is a giant but most of his products have low quality. He then sells them cheaper because there are readily available resources and cheap labour in China. It is cheaper to produce a product in China than in most countries. So, most countries would buy instead of producing/manufacturing

  10. The experts here! Some of you will only leave ma username on Lusaka Times for your children. Less talk, more work. I’m out.
