Tourism and Arts Minister Charles Banda has called for mindset change among Zambians and improved reading culture to avoid being misled.
Reacting to allegations by the opposition that President Edgar Lungu had referred to Bembas as ‘thieves’, and Chinese, as ‘Cockroaches’, the Minister said this was clear indication that people were deliberately twisting facts.
He said this is as a result of the failure by many Zambians to read and understand what has been written.
Dr. Banda said he had read the article in question in the News Diggers and that it was very clear in the story that the President was refereeing to what he had also read where someone said, out of 10 Bembas that you meet, six are thieves.
The Minister said the President further referred to what he read that, ‘Chinese people are likes cockroaches. They can survive even in most difficult places and conditions, like in stoves where it is hot, in fridges where it is extremely cold’.
In a statement issued by Ministry spokesperson Sakabilo Kalembwe, Dr. Banda said in this case the President asked why Zambians cannot be like the Chinese.
The Minister wondered whether there was anything with the two statements and if it was wrong to read and make references.
Dr. Banda has called for mindset change for all Zambians in the year 2019 as hatred and jealous would not build the country.
Every explanation to validate the Lungu’s gaffe!! Truth be told the president made an unfortunate choice of examples/words. He just must learn to stick to prepared speeches. He is not gifted with oratory. The last time Dr. Banda’s boss said Zambians have a bad reading culture, the matter he was referring to was ruled against him by the courts!

Reading culture is not reading anything like your article. Or worse reading graffiti from Sunday Chanda and Tayali.
I wonder why Juniors always have to mop up after Lazy Lungu has messed up…this is why they discourage him from Press conference they know that he lacks communication skills, to make matters worse he is a lawyer.
You can read but if you are not educated you won’t understand what you are reading. The government must repair its education system which has collapsed.

These leaders are very myopic and luck vision. How can the reading culture improve when the cost of by books is very colossal? I like reading novels and newspapers respectively. I have to part away with k210 for me to buy a book and a newspaper. Libraries are not wells stocked. The facilities are obsolete and dilapidated. It is also painful to find that ,even where libraries were constructed, shopping malls have been built. For instance, I went to Chifubu Library to go and have a look at the books that are there after a long time of being there. I was greeted with a barricade. The Library is to be razed down to pave way for a shopping mall. It is quite disappointing and an erosion in reading culture because government has no plans for the youths. Reading enlightens the entire citizenry.
