The World Bank has given Zambia six million United States Dollars to establish a Zoonotic Research Laboratory at the University of Zambia.

UNZA Vice Chancellor Luke Mumba says the laboratory will be a Centre of Excellence in the Southern African region for the study of Zoonoses which has becoming important due to rapid world population growth and intensive animal husbandry.

Professor Mumba said these latest developments will help UNZA achieve its set goals in the 2018-2022 Strategic Plan.

He said the grant which was awarded to Zambia when President Edgar Lungu visited Japan in December 2018 will be used for the rehabilitation and equipping of the Veterinary laboratory at UNZA School of Veterinary Medicine.

He was speaking when he called on Zambia’s Ambassador to Japan Ndiyoi Mutiti at the Zambian Embassy in Tokyo today.

Professor Mumba and his two-man delegation are in Japan to launch the University’s strategic partnership with GIFU University, which is renowned for engineering studies.

And Ms. Mutiti said the mission in Tokyo has continued to strengthen bilateral relations with Japan in many areas including education sector.

She said the mission shall ensure that players in Zambia’s education sector are linked to strategic

  1. By the way the buildings at UNZA look incomplete,I mean the outer walls are dull and worn out and dont seem to have been refurbished as is the case with the main building at Evelyn Hone college( although it equally is rundown).Does it mean UNZA was opened in that state(incomplete) or the buildings have just deteriorated for lack of maintenance?

  2. Yet we have fooools justifying getting a loan for 1.2 billion to construct a motorway because they want hotels along it …Chinese are smart!!

    • jay jay 2017/2018 bitter man of the year. walikosa mambala , you’ve been bitter since 2011 and your face now look old and wrinkled just because your small god lost to ‘the man of action’. you have even stopped talking about fire engines after the American Fire Fighters donates the engines worth $1 million each. Iam sure by 2021 you will even look older than KK.

  3. My only complaint and worry is the wanton sale of UNZA land. My heart bleeds whenever I drive through Thabo Mbeki road. if you compare the current status of UNZA with the University of Dar Es Salaam ,you feel like crying. Then I tell myself that the decisions to let land to commercial activities has actually been done by professors. If professors can make such decisions, I don’t know how our education system can improve

  4. UNZA campus looks like the great Zimbabwe ruins because there’s no maintenance .Now I fear for what will become of this new $6m lab .

  5. Money ,money and more investment yet you’ll never see UNZA on the top ranking of the best ten universities in Africa.

  6. How I wish politicians were like our leant friends. There is no way you can go out with a gang of people just to go and solicit money for the nation. The professor went out with two of his colleagues to Japan. Politicians would go out in group as if they are swarms of bees. It is a sheer waste of tax payers money. Others just go there on a shopping spree. The president should cut down on the number of delegation when going out for an excursion.

  7. Half of that money will go to the ones handling. They will inflate costs and pocket the rest like the fire engine trucks.

  8. How I pray the Japanese could just build and equip the lab themselves rather than giving that money to the government ????

  9. China should try to do the same for Zambia. Financial help in form of grants is what we are praying for. Prayer for loans is a PF prayer.

  10. This grant could have been avoided if Lungu has listened and stopped globe trotting using tax payers cash and chinese kaloba .
