Government has directed Permanent Secretaries to strictly adhere to agreed austerity measures in view of economic challenges the country is faced with.

Secretary to Cabinet SIMON MITI says Permanent Secretaries should help restore economic growth and stability by adhering to the measures and striking a balance with growth strategies.

Dr. MITI said this when he addressed Permanent Secretaries during the Sixth Senior Public Service Management meeting in Lusaka today.

He also pointed out the need to constantly review progress made in implementing measures employed by government to reduce running costs and enhancing revenue collection.

He revealed that in the transport sector government intends to sell some motor vehicles to reduce running costs as part of the recently approved government fleet management policy.

And, Dr. MITI has directed Permanent Secretaries in the Ministries of Energy and Finance to expedite the implementation of reforms in the sector.

Dr. MITI told the Controlling Officers that President EDGAR LUNGU is concerned with the abuse of the Farmer Input Support Program in which some District Agricultural Officers are conniving with some agro dealers to siphon inputs which are later sold on the market.

He said this trend needs to end and can best be addressed through reviewing the system.

Dr. MITI has also directed Permanent Secretaries to desist from issuing statements to the media without clearance from his office.

  1. I THINK SENIOR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS INCLUDING THE PRESIDENT MUST LEAD BY EXAMPLE AND PERMANENT SECRETARIES WILL FALL IN LINE. NO SON WILL DARE DO WHAT HE HASN’T SEEN HIS FATHER DO. ALSO WITH RESPECT MR MITI ASK MR LUNGU OUR PRESIDENT TO STOP BEING CONCERNED AND START TAKING ACTION THAT’S HIS MANDATE REMIND HIM THAT HIS PRESIDENT. WE ARE CONCERNED AT THE LEVEL OF CONCERN HIS SHOWINGSHOWING ABOUT THINGS HIS IN CHARGE OF.

    • Do we have a permanent secretary who sanctions presidential travels? If we do have one , he is one generous individual. The mean one is one who okays civil servants, pensioners, farmers and agro dealers, contractors payments.

    • Imagine being a PS in dumb Bowman Lusambo’s office and you are strictly trying to adhere the so called fictitious austerity measures where even PF cardres come to dance and sing his name; Bowman would threaten you with transfer to “rural area” and Miti can not do anything about it.

  2. PF always talk like they are not the ones in charge. Is it difficult to identify which PS is not complying to the directive and act timely?

  3. Stup!d *****, after stealing so much money for Ministry of Health with Henry Kapoko and you should talk about austerity measures? We say how quick you were building houses at Chindindi within a month houses were fully completed.

  4. After you have stolen and fattened yourselves you now want to talk a about austerity? Workers follow in the actions of their leaders. If your worker is stealing , chances are that you are greedy and probably a thief too. Zambia is a depressing country run by incompetent greedy thieves. That is why my wlfe who is whlte managed to convince me to move to the UK until upnd win the elections. All I have heard since we left is suffering, hunger , loadshedding, theft. So now, apart from seeing my family, convince me why I should visit zambia over Christmas? My whlte wlfe says muleeee wanjiiii to you all, in her swiss British accent.

  5. Charity begins at home, the president and his sycophants must practice what they preach. A president who flies to KKIA to jump on a jet and changes planes when he is in Northern Province to get to another town must be the last person to talk about austerity. He is the wasteful and lacks the sense of responsibility. The sooner he and his corrupt and thieving lot are out of office the better for this country! Zambia was amongst the ten fastest growing economies on the continent along with Ghana when Sata came into office, today it has dismally fallen behind under the “stewardship” of Edgar Lungu.

  6. Its clear that no one is in charge of the PSs. All the time its pleading with them and time and again. Just who is in charge. Suppliers have supplied goods to these Ministries and no money is coming forth to them. Just who is in charge. Now this new message for some of them means “Dont pay those you even owe” . We need our money we already delivered and we need our money. You cannot have it both ways – get a service and refuse to pay – takwaba!!!
    Clear Disaster!!!!

The economic challenges don’t come from the civil service. They come from the fact that the PF gvt allowed the western countries to offload their debt onto Zambia through the Eurobonds, instead of being paid in taxes from the mining industry.

Does this guy know how many permanent Secretaries he has? It will be a ful time job to clear each and every PS to talk to the media. But then this is PF for you, it never shares information unless it is doctored and reduced to something senseless. They are masters of fake news and half truths and yet they admonish others for doing the same.

And the austerity measures? Not serious of course, just a few days ago the boss had to make a costly trip to Northen province all because of the loss by PF of a ward by election to Trible UPND. Of course it is disguised as monitoring “development projects”. And you want PSs to practice austerity? Come on Dr…
