The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) is in the process of recruiting an extra 1,100 staff to beef up the staff already in the field as a way of enhancing the efficiency in the voter registration exercise.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer, Patrick Nshindano has disclosed this today during the Non-governmental Gender Organisations Coordinating Council -NGOCC- 21st General Assembly in Lusaka.
Mr. Nshindano also said the new registration process is meant to enhance the credibility of the voter register ahead of the 2021 General election.
He said the Commission had to do away with the old register as it was not compatible with some of the new security features required of the new voter register.
Mr. Nshindano has encouraged Zambians to register in the ongoing voter registration process.
And speaking during the same function, ECZ Vice-Chairperson, Emily Sikazwe encouraged women to register as voters in order to participate in the governance of the country.
Meanwhile, NGOCC Board Chairperson Mary Mulenga said the women’s movement is currently implementing a coordinated elections campaign strategy to increase women’s participation in politics and decision-making.

Should have done this from the beginning.

Excellent development. The ecz has listen to our complaints and requests as their customers and they have reacted accordingly. Remember that this is also created a 1100 Jobs. It’s a win win.

The most dangerous people in the world are not the tiny minority instigating evil acts, but those who do the acts for them. The devil would be powerless if he couldn’t entice people to do his work. So as long as money continues to seduce the hungry, the hopeless, the broken, the greedy, and the needy, there will always be war between brothers.
And why didn’t they think of this before the exercise started?
There was no planning or forecasting?

Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear.

Good development that should have been the norm from day one. Another thing ECZ should do is to extend the registrion to two weeks or a month more as you know it’s rainy season n it’s raining dogs n cats
Any other proper govt would have fired the executive for incompetence but under Lazy this is a good performance

I am wondering the competence of ECZ this time around, how they did not plan to recruit enough man power. I expected things to have improved with improved use of ITC tools. When compared to past voter registration since independence this one has been the worst exercise. Those men and women at ECZ should bear in mind that proper registration of voters is part and huge cost of democracy. Its not their exercise but for voters and they are there to facilitate and smooth passage of the process and not create uncertainties . Why is ECZ trying to grow hair on an egg. They should not shy away from admitting their shortcomings and this calls for extension of the registration period. THE AG’s office should take interest and audit the procurement of poor quality equipment and materials deployed…
