Kambwili defends the high price of food commodities

Share

Former Minister in the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) Government Chishimba Kambwili has defended the high prices of commodities being experienced in Zambia

Speaking during the PF interactive forum with host Nakiwe Simpungwe yesterday, Mr Kambwili said that the rise in a global phenomenon as has been observed by the United Nations and scoffed at United Party for National Development (UPND) President Hakainde Hichilema’s machinations that once he is elected at 10:00hrs the dollar will come down against the Kwacha.

“Someone was being rhetoric that when I am elected at 10 o’clock, 14:00hrs the dollar will come down ni magic abracadabra, please see them for who they are, liars!!” he exclaimed.

“The United Nations has declared that the prices of food world over prices have gone up by two or three times more because of draught, and Covid 19. Global food has extended to the highest in almost in a decade, this is not me, not Lungu but the UN who is stating,” he said

Citing an example of South Africa which hosts a much larger economy than Zambia, Dr Kambwili said;

“Mealie Meal today in South Africa is at R230 – K380 for 25kg bag of mealie meal and in this country [Zambia] a 25kg is costing at K140, a kg of meat is R73- K120 in South Africa… and in Zambia meat is ranging between K70 to K90 kg, lets come to cooking oil 2.5ltrs in South Africa is costing R79 – K130.”

He noted that even the pump prices in South Africa are much higher as compared to Zambia.

“When we come to petrol I have heard people hallucinate that petrol is expensive in Zambia and cheaper in South Africa, where are you getting the statistics from? Petrol in South Africa is R16.91 per litre which translates to K28 per litre, how much are we paying in Zambia, K17,” he queried.

Mr Kambwili observed that it was a pure fallacy and selfish act to state that the Patriotic Front Government had failed.

“You go to the poor people in the compound and you want to mislead them to remove a legitimately elected government, a government that has done so much in ten years, a government that has brought dignity in terms of roads, hospitals, and schools and saying they are a failed government because of the price of commodities. And prices are better in other countries,” he said.

  2. Common sense tells me that you cant sell certain commodities in South Africa at a higher price and sell them in Zambia at a lower price after the transportation costs. E.g Pick n Pay, Choppies, Shoprite, Game Store etc are all from South Africa. So those commodities from South are supposed to more more expensive when on the Zambian market due to transportation costs. Lets not be political for nothing. Anything to do with food in South Africa is cheaper than in Zambia. what is expensive in South Africa than in Zambia is anything to do with clothing.

  3. Don’t listen to this chameleon /turncoat /traitor Kambwili .PF has mortgaged Zambia to very high debts which have caused high food prices-that’s the truth.

  4. I thing PF are now confused. They dont even know what to tell the electorates. Trying to play campaign songs, only to discover that campaign songs are now an out of fashion way of campaigning.

Even Kaizar Zulu have done much campaigning for them on Lusaka Times compared to their big wigs. He will be angry at them if they confuse what he established for them. KZ dont just campaign here, communicate to your fellows that they should pull the strings together with you. Otherwise all of you will leave the country when this Tonga boy assumes office as you know that Munaba maningi.

  7. Yaba. Mr Kambwili, think on behalf of those who can not afford even with the prices for commodities you’ve just acclaimed. How I wish you were under their shoes and be as neutral as possible. Please, we must make sense of such public matters.

  8. Chachine the magician abracadabra kwacha yayima. Kikikiki. Hh is mentally retarded. Ba kambwili welcome back to your normal self. That tribal party tried to brain wash you. You are in top form. This is the kambwili I like to see. Remind me of 2011 election the way we worked to win. The same is happening this year

    Opposition? What has changed?Be honest
With your self.Or are you saying this to please
    Your masters?

  10. This ***** is comparing the prices in rands with kwacha when the rand is 1.6 times stronger then the kwacha. It is obvious that when you translate rands into kwacha then kwacha will look more and it will give an assumption that things in South Africa are more expensive when they are not.

They seem to be more expensive to us because our currency is in a free fall.

This is how dull politicians can be.

    No economic knowledge..

He is also dull and unaware of the cooking oil prices in zambia. Cooking oil 2.5ltr is selling at K200-250.

In S.A a person earning R15000 is earning well above $1000. Able to afford a latest s20. Same in zed k15000 it will take this person almost 2 months to get that same S20.

This is what dull politicians don’t understand.

    • You’ve hit the nail on the head Kambwili is trying to be relevant here. Even if the Kwacha was as he thinks, what is the spending power of a Zambian worker as compared to his South African counterpart? The salaries in South Africa are not only higher but essentials and many needs are locally manufactured. He’s just being naive.

  11. CK, Why doesn’t PF just build a statue at Mulungushi textiles in Kabwe exactly at the same spot where they have been standing in the last 3 presidential elections from 2011 and were they have been making pronouncements at every election that we are opening the textile and people of Kabwe vote for them and after elections nothing happens

  12. Has he started flying to England for a cup of tea??? Looks like the contracts are back and is now chewing with Bandit President Edward Chagwa Lungu…unfortunately we dont have serious opposition in Zambia…all jokers…..HH is a joker just like thieving pastor Nevers Mumba

  13. Zambia is currently losing millions in fuel subsidies because most truckers in the region are uplifting fuel from Zambia. This is one of the reasons that’s causing diesel shortages, apart from the loading challenges in Mozambique. We need to raise the level of our political debate if we have to develop our country. Farmers will sell their maize to FRA at K150 per 50kg bag but somebody wants to buy mealie mill at K50! It doesn’t work like that. That’s why in Zambia it’s possible to elect an idyoti. He doesn’t need to have a serious program. He only has to make funny of some situations and he’ll be popular. Sometimes I even wonder why we complain.

  14. How can one compare south African prices, such a good and big economy of 400 billion US dollars GDP with better wages than Zambia of a small economy of 25 billion US dollars GDP only. Are you comparing apples with apples or its just lack of basic understanding, knowledge and education.

    16

  15. For your own information, meali meal prices cost R140 not R230 and as i have already mentioned R1 is not K1. Hence we cannot compare Rands to kwacha

RANDS ARE 1.6 TIMES MORE STRONGER THEN KWACHA SO IT IS OBVIOUS THAT WHEN WE TRANSLATE RANDS INTO OUR WEAK POOR CURRENCY WE WILL FIND PRODUCTS IN SA EXPENSIVE.

what is R1 for the locals is K1.6 for us so whose currency is weak ?

    Dull politicians fooling the massss

Comparing sa prices with zed prices. Dull moron

  16. “If I go back to PF I am insane, I cant go back to ba pompmpwe bamushibila insala” and we are supposed to call such people as leaders, how mwebanthu?

  17. How does someone seriously compare commodity prices literally from one currency to the other.

Price of fuel is 16 rand and equates it to k28 in Zambian Kwacha and concludes that it’s cheap.

Is this how a big person can analyse issues?

For starters our Zambian kwacha has lost so much value, the Kwacha at it’s worst was 1:1 against the rand.
You now need more Kwacha to buy rand.

For your information 16Rand is nothing based on the south African economy.

Is it not the high cost of living in Zambia that made ba kambwili go back to PF, so what is he trying to teach us now?

If the economy is free falling then why are people getting paid at the ministry of finance. What is their job. Isn’t their job to manage the economy?

The problem is you over borrowed gentlemen and had…

  18. Kambwili is paid to defend his master.

His even feeling shy cause his conscience knows that his lying.

The sooner you accept things are bad and that you have failed the sooner people who have ideas can help you.

Putting your head in the sand and comparing to the Rand is nonsense.

Wasn’t the Kwacha better the rand in terms of exchange rate before PF tool over.

After killing the Kwacha again you want to claim commodities are cheaper in Zambia?

  19. This guy who told us the alliance was 99.9% done, but left the alliance over a 0.01%
Today ati if you throw a stone ati its likely it will 99.1% land on a development project, I tried to throw a stone and it landed on my neighbour’s pan and the K5 pamela cooking oil he bought at a katemba has been spilled.

MR 99.9% is a pathological liar.

    13
  20. Just ask the one who knows how to fix it what he meant when he said the country should be in total lockdown. What would the situation be now? When you vote with emotions yes the answer is straight forward but when you use your senses then you will analyse critically and come to a sober conclusion.

  22. Expelled by PF, reinstated in PF in an election year without applying to be reinstated, that is how people are being used by the PF. The poor soul is just being used, terrified to face jail life. Maybe that will help tame his careless statements in future, but clearly being used if not abused by being sent to go and defend the indefendable on tv, I feel sorry for the poor soul

  23. CK, Why doesn’t PF just build a statue at Mulungushi textiles in Kabwe exactly at the same spot where they have been standing in the last 3 presidential elections from 2011 and have been making pronouncements at that gate at every election that we are opening the textile and people of Kabwe vote for them and after elections nothing happens……

  24. So Kambwili is the biggest pompwe in history of Zambian Politics…and why don’t people just play his past recordings on TV and radio…just like GBM….useless makakas and they claim to be rich and yet it’s all via corrupt practices and stolen tax payers money….ashamed to be Zambian

  25. Average wages in South Africa are R 23,000, equivalent to $1680. In Zambia average wages are K6000, equivalent to $300. Did CK address the issue of buying power or wages? Industries, employment levels etc.?

CK’s ‘analysis’ is pure lies, brainwashing and hoodwinking of the unenlightened people. He is saying things in a shallow childish manner, like, ‘Look, bread is 3 kwacha in Zambia and in South Africa it’s 5 Kwacha. So we are cheaper!’ What a load of b.ull!

  26. So according to this man’s logic the weaker the Kwacha devalues the cheaper things will appear in Zambia compared to Rand pricing in South Africa !!! Mwankolenomics at play !!!

  27. He did not defend the high prices he explained according to his understanding the high pricing he did a comparator and ofcourse if he was still in UpNd sinking hand he would have reversed what he said but he has a mouth that speaks non stop

  28. The Only way to raise the living standards of our people is to create sectors and industries that will increase and raise productivity for Zambians to produce more of those products we are importing to restructure the terms of trade favorably and begin to record favorable capital and Income flows in addition Managing productivity to realize our potential and investments in infrastructure projects and other soft skills are what will address Inflation especially for food and services We need to do the right thing like its being done to address CORE inflation because Food Inflation is cyclical and will over the period of time with innovative agricultural systems…

  30. He is right. When did UPND hate Kambwili? It’s after he abandoned the losing party. You wanted CK to be used by a region politics.Mmembe and CK know UPND very well.Stop insulting him.2 months ago u were cerebrating today insults.Desparate party. What he said are facts.Tell us how you’ll reduce prices of mealie meal when u want to double the price of maize?UPND supporters are loosers.Anyway losing elections for 6 consecutively is so bad.U can be bitter guys.Sorry Alebwelelapo

  31. Ever heard of purchasing power paroty?
Or let me put it this way: How do salaries in SA compare when translated into Kwacha? Sometimes, silence is golden, bakalamba

  32. Botswana is doing fine against all odds and it is so because the government is working for its people irrespective of what is happening to the rest of the countries, Botswana’s concern is easing to the possible extent challenges that affect the Tswana’s! For Zambia it’s okay “Let’s suffer because others are suffering too!” This is failure to manage the national economy with safety measures to mitigate difficult times or find solutions. Instead we want to be sympathetic with “every country is suffering” to justify failures.

  33. Then when you look at the lock measures we had given negative terms of trade especially for food one will reason with the comments but more so as we are exporting more of those foods to our preferred neighbor in DRC and current parity prices between DRC and Zambia Also on the global levels the food prices say that of sugar have moved to 4-year high. However affordable and continuing with ensuring food security for our people especially for those we may reserve to ensure our people afford before prices return to normal over the cycle will be important We call it Export restrain measures

  34. That’s what happens when you have someone with a Doctorate he bought on the internet doing a Kaponya analysis. He is so good insults and championing tribalism .

What happened to his return to PF ? He hoped he would be the running mate to Lungu and this did workout .

  35. The comments and analysis in some way were reasoned but there is more to be done on the economy so that with solid food basket we can continue to have low food secure prices for our people Should the reporting for inflation be urban centric or rural os should be just a common CPI or CPE that should be the issues for crsp and others to align and be more informative but atleast given the general rise in prices especially in food Zambia is more lowwer than comparable in the region and global

  36. Just address the market expectations implied in the real GDP growth and inflation also to signal a downward spiral of prices as opposed to them going up to protect many from costs of inflation I think he spoke well having given reason and basis but that should only come with a productive society

  37. CK should know that Trust and Confidence are priceless. Perceptions become reality. Lungu is perceived to be a thief,a thug, a corrupt person, a drunkard, a hypocrite etc. For these reasons the International Financial Community has no respect for ECL. In the eyes of the International Financial Community HH is known as a Sober Businessman with technical know how to run businesses and the Economy. HH is Economic and Financial literate and he is upright and can be trusted. Based on these traits its very possible that Kwacha can appreciate within hours after HH is sworn in as the New President of Zambia . ECL has no Capacity, Competencies and Political will to turnaround this Economy. Over the 61/2 years ECL has been in Power the Economy has shrunk and poor Governance and Corruption…

  38. He is back in the bubble and cannot side with the poor, he sees things from a very different perspective. Who in their right state of mind can make such claims and comparisons? In Zambia commodities are expensive and people cannot afford them, what is happening in SA and UK is not our business, it is theirs to worry about. This man was fainting everywhere and people thought he is being persecuted kanshi ninsalafye. Now he cannot even faint and sweat anymore because he eating with them, what a sillly unprincipled man.

  39. Chishimba Kambwili must surely be most Useless politician in Zambia’s History. The ***** of the Decade.
Unprincipled & proudly Shameless ,totally irrelevant. Why do we even afford him National airtime to express his nonsense. He is worse than a prostitute down Addis Ababa road, how much did PF pay him to sell his soul .
Secondly ,has Mrs Kambwili also rejoined PF after being stripped naked in front of the high court by Zambia Police?
My advice to Mr Kambwili is ,retire to Luanshya never to be seen Ever.

  40. Stop lying some if us live in SA…I bought ubunga called Ubuntu ku pick and pay 25kg for 98 rand

  41. You cannot compare food prices to other countries, we should ask ourselves what is the impact of the trillions spent on the farmer FARMER INPUT SUPPORT PROGRAM (FISP) and FRA and justify whether it is fertilize support program. These two are supposed to have an impact on prices if well articulate and not being as a campaign tool for the ruling government E.G. giving six bags of fertilizer in some parts of the country and and three bags in some as FISP you would wonder because in all areas they paid a ka K400.

  42. KAMBWILI YOU ARE NOW JUST LIKE A MAD SCIENTIST. NO REASONABLE PERSON SHALL NEVER PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR THEORIES OR WORDS . YOU HAVE LOST YOUR CHANCE IN POLITICAL ASCENSION.. JUST WAIT WAIT FOR 12TH AUGUST VOLCANO BLAST BLAST WHICH THE MAJORIITY PEOPLE OF ZAMBIANS ARE GOING TO IGNITE AGAINST BA POMPWE YOU DEFINED DAND RIGHTLY DECLARED AND NOW MADLY CAMPAIGNING FOR THEM . LET US HOPE ITS NOT FOR CRIMINAL RELATED REASONS

  43. This baboon also, to it escalating food prices don’t matter because all it does is forage around freely! He should also shut up about price comparison between SA and Zambia because in the scheme of things there is income per capita which determines affordability weighed heavily in favour if SA! These voodoo PhDs, kuunya we chikopo iwe!

  44. KAMBWILI IS DEFENDING ARTIFICIAL PRICES WHICH WILL DRAMATICALLY RISE AFTER THE ELECTIONS. THESE PRICES ARE ARTIFICIALLY “LOW” BECAUSE OF SUSPENSION OF SOME TAXES JUST FOR THE ELECTION CAMPAIGN PERIOD.
