Presidential Delivery Unit Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist Tobias Michelo has described the Mwembezi Irrigation Scheme in Mbala District as key in contributing to increased maize production.
Mr Michelo says the project is an important undertaking as it is expected to contribute towards the national target of 3,000 metric tonnes of winter maize.
Mr Michelo has praised the 346 farmers benefiting from the Mwembezi Irrigation Scheme, describing it as one of the most successful Presidential Delivery Unit interventions that has enabled farmers to produce maize throughout the year.
Speaking when he toured the project Mr Michelo said the irrigation system is clear evidence that farmers are now fully utilising land and are able to produce food consistently, thereby strengthening food security.
And Mwembezi Village Headperson, Kambole Sikazwe confirmed that the irrigation scheme has transformed agricultural production in the area.
Mr Sikazwe added that the irrigation system has significantly improved household incomes and enhanced food security for farmers in the community.

This project sounds interesting. I hope that it is a sustainable venture and not a political milage.
Are the land, soil and water conservation being taken care of? Good farming practices? Soil erosion and nutrient depletion. Water wastage and depletion of wells and reservoirs? Are the irrigation equipment and machinery being serviced locally? Are those equipment locally sourced?
Is the supply of farm inputs and services reliable?
Are farmers paid good prices and on time for their products?
What is the involvement of farmers in the management of the irrigation project?
Just wondering.
