NRPUP presidential candidate Brian Mundubile has told voters that the burial of former president Edgar Lungu will only take place once his party forms government following the August 13 general election.
Former president Lungu, who led Zambia for seven years, died in a South African clinic on June 5, 2025. His remains have remained unburied for more than a year due to a legal dispute between his family and the government over his final resting place.
Last week, South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal overturned an earlier ruling that had ordered the repatriation of Lungu’s remains to Zambia.
The court ruled in favour of Lungu’s family, granting it the legal right to determine the burial location. The family has maintained that the former president should be buried in South Africa.
Since the ruling, there had been no indication as to when Lungu would be laid to rest.
However, while addressing a campaign rally in Chinsali on Tuesday, Mundubile said he and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, had agreed to ensure that Lungu is buried if they win the August 13 election.
Mundubile urged supporters to vote for the NRPUP, saying the decision now rested with the electorate.
“So, my mothers and fathers, what you need to know is that our father Edgar Lungu had not yet been buried. That’s why Makebi Zulu and I, together with other leaders have agreed that if you vote for us in 2026 and we win, we will respect our father, Lungu by burying him in a dignified way. It is now up to you to make it happen,” Mundubile told the crowd.
