Police in Eastern Province are investigating two separate cases of defilement involving girls aged 14 and 15, with one suspect already in custody.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer, Robertson Mweemba, confirmed that both matters were reported on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Chiparamba and Mchini Police Posts respectively.
In the first case, Mr Mweemba said a 38-year-old woman of Chief Chikuwe’s area in Chipangali District reported that her 15-year-old daughter was allegedly defiled and impregnated
“The incident is alleged to have occurred between February and March 2026,’’Mr Mweemba said.
The discovery was made earlier in May, when the juvenile fell ill and could not attend school.
Mr Mweemba noted that medical examinations at Mbenjere Rural Health Post revealed that the juvenile was three months pregnant.
“It was during the medical examinations that it was discovered that the juvenile was three months pregnant. It was then that she mentioned the suspect,” he stated.
Mr Mweemba says the suspect, a 19-year-old school dropout from Nkhwinjili Village, has since been arrested and a police medical report form was issued to the victim as investigations go on.
In the second case, a 58-year-old grandmother of Mchenga Compound in Chipata District reported that her 14-year-old granddaughter was allegedly defiled by a 16-year-old boy.
Mr Mweemba said the incident occurred between June 28 at 20:00 hours and June 29, 2026 at 05:00 hours.
According to the police, the juvenile was allegedly taken to a friend’s house where she was defiled and spent the night before returning home the next morning.
“Upon being asked where she spent the night, she later disclosed it to her grandmother who reported the case to the police,” Mr Mweemba confirmed.
No arrest has been made as the suspect is currently on the run.
Mr Mweemba said a manhunt has been instituted to bring the 16-year-old suspect to book.
Authorities have urged parents and guardians to be vigilant and to promptly report cases of child abuse, in order to protect children’s rights and welfare.
