Barrick Lumwana mine hands over classroom block to Muyashi community

Solwezi District Commissioner, Chipawa Chipawa, has commended Barrick Lumwana mine for ploughing back into the community by building a 1×3 classroom block at Muyashi in Chief Matebo’s area.

Mr Chipawa said the PF government under the leadership of President Edgar Lungu is committed to ensuring quality education for all communities in the country.

He said this during the handover of a 1×3 classroom block by Barrick Lumwana Mine to Muyashi community in chief Mateo’s area.

The District Commissioner urged the parents not to deny the girl child their right to education by taking them to fields to cultivate, adding that girls should avoid getting pregnant and going into early marriages.

He stressed that even the boys should be encouraged to get education which is freely available for all and warned them against engaging in bad practices such as beer drinking and other vices.

And Christopher Mukala, a representative of Barrick Lumwana Mine operations Director, Brian Grebenc, thanked the Muyashi community for contributing building materials such as sand, and stones towards the project.

He explained that Barrick Lumwana Mine has spent a total sum of K202, 113 on construction of the classroom block, noting that the initiative was meant to contribute to the development of the education sector.

Mr Mukala observed that Lumwana Mining Company would continue with the model of involving communities in determining their development needs and empowering them to take an active role in implementing solutions to their felt needs.

He called on the community to consult and channel project proposals to the Lumwana community trust (LCT) which is governed by a board to steer applications for project implementation headed by three chiefs, namely, Mukumbi, Matebo and Mumena.

And Muyashi school deputy head teacher, Aston Banda, appealed to the mine to help the community by constructing some staff houses at the school which is hit by a shortage of teachers’ houses.

Mr Banda also appealed for boreholes to be sunk in the area as the entire community depends on one borehole.
