Former First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa has today filled in her nomination papers to contest for position of Lusaka Executive Mayor on the UPND ticket.
Dr Mwanawasa was accompanied to the civic centre by a group of supporters that included Former Vice President Guy Scott, Former MPs Sylvia Masebo and Obvious Mwaliteta.
And addressing her supporters, Dr Mwanawasa pledged to transform the city of Lusaka if elected into office.
She said top of her agenda will be to tackle the perennial cholera outbreaks and water shortages are addressed.
“The last few years, the councils are like a pit where all the money from the treasury geos for salaries, our new approach among others will be creating a city council that will be able to engage into capital projects for the councils,” Dr Mwanawasa said.
She said she wants to see a Lusaka City Council in the next five years that will be able to contribute to the treasury in form of tax contribution.
“We want to have a council that will be financially viable and be able to pay its own salaries and have a good capital base to enable it borrow and invest in infrastructure development,” she said.
She added, “The role of the Mayor this time is executive and one has to be elected into office and for us as UPND, we want to make this office of Mayor to be about the people of Lusaka. We want to see change in the provision of water, the quality of roads and electricity provision and this will entail restructuring Lusaka and not displacing the people entirely as we have seen.
Others you filed in their nomination papers include Wilson Kalumba for PF and Reverand Alfred Sakala of UNIP while Fisho Mwale and Elias Mpondela filed in as Independent candidates.

Ahhh! This is a good move. With umwaiche James Chona out of the way and Fisho Mwale (who was adopted by MMD) in a twist, this lady is taking it. And she’ll deliver. Not that one for PF (the man from CRA). I’m not UPND, MMD or even PF but iyi yena ni ziiiii!
She knows that HH cannot win. He has lost the strategy and gotten caught up with the problem of choosing a running mate.
GBM is a big liability even when he is pumping personal fortunes in the campaign.

I could care less who wins the Lusaka Mayoral seat. All we need is someone capable of cleaning up and organizing that DUMP of a city! The impunity and disregard for ORGANIZED SYSTEMS with which people go by doing their business in Lusaka is really disgraceful and frightening at the same time. Uphazard and shoddy constructions everywhere, street vending at nearly every corner in the city, nearly zero observance of traffic Laws, heaps of garbage everywhere, clogged drainages everywhere (big reason for cholera), unkept business fronts and surroundings, extra. Maureen Mwnanawasa, Fisho Mwale, Reverand Alfred Sakala and Elias Mpondela are household names & have got strong brands & need no introduction in Lusaka but are making last minute decisions like Dr. Nervous Mumba. Wilson Kalumba is little known entity but has done a lot of ground work since this is the only slot he has been targeting for from the beginning. Coupled with the PF brand, it will be an interesting battle & no one can be written off until the returning officer finally pronounces the winner.
Ah a, so that narrows the field of running mate for mr hh to Kaseba and co. Is it true that underfive has finalky settled for Kaseba Sata? Hh niwokopa kopa, he has no original ideas and it dies not come from his heart but whatever will bring the most votes.
If there’s a UPND politician wrecking havoc on the political arena as far as PF chances are concerned it’s GBM. He is causing shiki in PF. Under 5 as usual, you fail to see the logic behind Maureen Mwanawasa’s move. She knows being a Running mate to Hap Hazard (HH) won’t get her in. She knows Kaponya (HH) can not win anything, ever. She knows UPND can’t win the elections. But in her usual calculating manner, she can use the UPND, ride on their name and win a seat for herself which doesn’t depend on Kaponya (HH) election outcome. This is a strong message from Maureen. She has just passed a vote of no confidence in UPND
Kaponya (HH) has actually been caught unawares by Maureen. Who doesn’t know he’s been courting her for the Running mate option? She has snubbed his offer knowing he can’t be Republican President in Zambia.

Lusaka mayor seat has good candidates. The resident of lusaka especially the voters need to dig into history, research and evaluate the past moyars’ and governors’ performance. There is need for them to concentrate on those who performed well and bad. These sincere evaluation would eventually help to make the good and informed decision that shall take lusaka to its visioned outlook.
Lusaka city requires a very sincere, radical and hard working yet down to earth leader. Lusaka electorates should never vote candidates with questionable characters with high affinity for cash.
I ernestly ask all the voters not to look at parties but individual performance records both in public and private lives.

Remember how he pressured ECL for the same – even inviting the Kenyan VP to help canvass for him. ECL listened to none of that crap. Imagine picking Miles (a president of another political party) at the expense of longstanding loyal members – the chap is in maningi trouble.

I have seen bloggers questioning the issue of tackling Cholera. This is a very easy thing to do when there is commitment. Improve water reticulation, drainage sewerage system in the city and cholera will be a thing of the past. I like ambitious people. I give them a chance to prove themselves. For Maureen, I say go for it and prove yourself.

The problem is since councils are not self supporting mayor has to work government of the day. A mayor cannot remove street vendors for example, if the government does not want. The best mayor/governor ever was the late Sata.
