The Ministry of Tourism and Arts has observed a reduction in the number of wildlife related offences recorded in the first quarter of 2016 compared to the last quarter of 2015.
The Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) recorded 379 arrests compared to 624 in the last quarter of 2015.
There were 315 convictions made compared to 488 in the last quarter of 2015.
139 imprisonments were made compared to 132 in the last quarter of 2015.
157 offenders were fined as compared to 281 in the previous quarter resulting in a collection of K2, 106,721 in fines compared to K710, 350 in 2015
Meanwhile, 162 kilogrammes of ivory was confiscated while 342.7 kilogrammes was recorded in the previous quarter.
252 firearms had been confiscated compared to 274 in 2015. Over 1000 wire snares had been confiscated opposed to 2158 in the last quarter of 2015.
This is according to a statement issued by Ministry of Tourism and Arts Public Relations Officer Sakabilo Kalembwe-Zacks.

This is an industry that should be one of the biggest employers and revenue generators in Zambia but under PF the honrible minister Jean Kapata is only intrested in selling hunting licences and organising street parties in livingstone.
This is pure non.sense and a lie and they now it. First of all they released those South African poachers whom they caught red handed and our dear Minister of Tourism of Arts Jean Kapata let them go. How? They had weapons, caught with stolen wildlife, forged documentation and she let them go. To claim crime has gone down is an insult to intelligent Zambians who can see through these lies. Then again it’s election period so they will try anything and everything. Good try though madame minister! Your time is up very soon and no more issuing of those biased licences to professional international hunters through Trophy Hunting. We bid you fare-well.
