Road Development Agency to introduce weigh-in motion plazas

The Road Development Agency (RDA) says it will soon introduce Weigh-In-Motion technology at all toll plazas across the country.

RDA Director and Chief Executive Officer Elias Mwape said this will help curb corruption in an event that Transporters underpaid the required maximum weights and dimensions of vehicles permissible for transmission on public roads at the weigh-bridge.

He noted that the introduction of the Weigh-In-Motion technology is aimed at protecting major road networks from premature damage.

The Chief Executive Office said RDA wants transporters to adhere to the provisions of the public road maximum weight of vehicles as per regulations.

Mr Mwape also revealed that the agency is migrating all weigh bridges to multi deck platforms, with the Kafue and Kapiri Mposhi weigh bridges having been migrated already.

He said RDA will continue implementing measures aimed at protecting major road networks that are key to the country’s economic development from premature damage.

Mr Mwape stated that the agency will endeavour to provide world class road network that supports socio-economic growth in Zambia.

He said this during the official opening of the consultative workshop on the proposed increase and splitting of the abnormal load inspection and escort fee.

Meanwhile Mr Mwape says there is need for revising the K4, 075 inspection and escort fee.

He disclosed that the amount was introduced in 2007 and has since become inadequate to meet the goal for which it was formulated.

Mr Mwape urged participants at the one day workshop to come up with a suitable fee for both transporters and the RDA.

In a related development, RDA says the agency has from January to July, recorded 3,271 abnormal loads with 50 percent accounting for the mines and 50 percent related to construction.

In 2017, the agency recorded 4,487 abnormal loads, from which 40 percent were mine related and 60 percent from construction.
