Mr Hichilema’s Immediate Lockdown Prescription would Hurt the Masses

Share

By Sunday Chanda

We are very disappointed with Mr. Hakainde Hichilema’s insensitivity to the realities of the Covid-19, all in his quest to sound relevant.

At a time when everyone is putting their differences aside and coming together to fight a common enemy, Mr. Hichilema is busy politicking by running knee jerk political radio and TV adverts calling for a “Total Lockdown”.

IMPLICATIONS OF A LOCKDOWN

Mr. Hichilema is not making the call for a total lockdown in good faith.

Mr. Hichilema and UPND are aware of the civil unrest that is brewing in neighbouring countries that are under lockdown. There are long queues of people struggling to get food supplies in compounds and shops in high density areas while are running out of stock as people queue for hours.

Their army’s are being compelled to use force to control crowds.

A total lockdown may work for the “Mayadi” elite like Mr. Hichilema who can afford to stock up food for months on end but elsewhere in the compounds it will be a total disaster. This is the problem they’re facing in South Africa.
People are coming out of homes in the name of going to buy food from selected supermarkets.

Where people live hand-to-mouth like our compounds, a lockdown must be the last thing anyone would wish for the majority poor. This would result in the crowds queuing for food supplies, a situation that would have the potential to spread the virus even more aggressively.

Either Mr. Hichilema is a political novice who is given to impulsive decisions or knows the cost and he is trying to make political capital out of it.

MISINFORMATION AND CHEAP OPPORTUNISTIC POLITICKING AT THIS TIME COULD BE WORSE THAN THE VIRUS

It is disturbing that while our nation and the world comes together to fight Covoid 19; Mr. Hichilema’s deviant behaviour may end up worse than the virus.

We call upon all Zambians to ignore his politicking as we all come together to fight Covoid 19.

  1. Why should lock-down hurt the people? All countries have have locked-down have provided free food and other essential supplies to their people. If even Zimbabwe can supply free food, why should Zambia fail? Remember the that extra USD750,000 over and above normal price of fire tender? I mean the infamous 41 fire tenders. That is the money we should have used during lock-down. Corruption does not pay.

  2. Why is it that Sunday can’t discuss or defend his position on any topic without mentioning HH? Is it what they teach in PR?

  3. Iwee Chanda ichalo the chaba wiso waumfwa. You want us to die kolwe iwe.?? You think you’re safe with that stolen money?. No. Please stop playing with people’s lives twamipapata. And ba ECL mundala please don’t wish for what can’t happen without acting, we have a lot of people who don’t even understand what is happening currently and are busy ignoring everything because of illiteracy and poverty. Save those people please. By asking them to go home and lock down the country is the best you can ever do for such. Believe Italy was once in your position. And you think we can manage to test everyone if it spread in compounds of Lusaka and Copperbelt when it’s taking 3 days to process 50 samples??

  4. True, total lockdown only two things will happen to some people either die of hunger or the virus. Let us seek God’said intervention

  5. Iwe Sunday, don’t mislead people. A total lockdown does not mean closing business that provide essential goods and services. You are the one who is politicking and failing to put differences aside. HH is giving the government sensible advice but all you can do is find ways of gaining political mileage by putting his message out of context. Italy ignored calls for a total lockdown and they paid a very high price for their stubbornness. Trump initially ignored the advice and USA has now become the epicentre of the pandemic. And these are countries that have resources to fight the disease. Stop being immature and start reasoning for once in your life. This pandemic has the potential to halve Zambia’s population. That means everyone would lose a relative if it were to happen, including you…

  6. This Sunday idyot, I thought it wouldconfine itself to Sunday picnics (PF media interaction) and PF cadreism. Since when did it become a medical professional? Why not leave Dr Chilufya to guide Trible HH on why they cant do a lockdown? Or Dr Ng’andu from the finance and economics aslects? These are qualified PF ministers arent they? Please PF this is COVID-19 emergency, reign in your PF cadres and let professionals do the job.
What willl Sunday idyoit say if or when PF government finally decides a lockdown is necessasary? The President will be wrong? Yes of course because PF spokesperson Sunday fyul already told us!!
Just leave that Trible HH, we have already learnt to ignore his politics, he is as irrelevant as Sunday fyul!

  7. ..but I am beginning to respect trible UPND cadres, they are decently quiet on such a sensitive matter, comoared to Sunday idyoit.

  8. Dont resort to insult. This pure unreasonable thinkimg. Give a building comments not insults. This is barbaric and uncalled for. Comrade Sunday is right. HH is trying to compete with ECL as if he is also a president of this country. This is what we arrongance by HH.

  9. Mr Hichilemas spokesperson at it again. I am told that if he does not mention Hichilemas name in a week, he is not paid by their secretariat. Forgive the boy, he has a target to achieve to get his salary

  10. Lockdown is not the solution we have seen what is happening in the countries were they have in place this system of lockdown, it is not working, South Africa people are have consumed all the food they had and now they are coming out of their homes queuing for food which again will result into more transmissions of the virus.HH should also think about the out come of lockdown.Do we as majority Zambian have money to buy enough food to last for the days we are going to have that lockdown? Bo HH what is the solution you are not offering the solution.Think THINK think stop yapping.

  11. HH as no problem with lockdown but Garry Nkombo’s family and those who have no money to buy food how are they going to survive, that self employed brother and sister in the street, how are they going to survive? So Mr Hichilema just tell us the solution and stop politicking this calamity which as fallen upon the face of this world is not something to joke with look at how people have died and your friend Kambwili as gone self quarantined.

    11
  12. Stop politicking and work on pragmatic solutions. Awe mwe. If there is no plan, look to the Uganda plan, or the Sweden plan, or the USA plan (OK, scratch that one). This is time to speak tangibles and not interpret what someone said. Chanda will die of withdrawal symptoms once this job he has put upon himself comes to an end.

  13. Love him or hate him, he has a point; A STRONG ONE TOO!! It’s sad hh can’t even get a response from a minister and has to deal with young guys like Sunday. It’s sadder that Sunday talks more sense than him!! Instead of issuing statements in the media, hh should rally other oppostion players and engage grz. IT’S TIME TO UNITE AND FIGHT THE ENEMY INVADING OUR NATION-COVID 19-NOT EACH OTHER!!!!!

  14. I am in a lockdown in a foreign country. We have challenges too. Stay forecast Zambians please. This is time foe group think. Whatever may minimise the chances of corona to spread lets go for it. Some will die in the process but there are those who will survive and tell the story

  15. Hh alipena. Continue following him mukapena bonse. Hh is what happens when an African tries to bring European ideals in an African environment. Our situation is peculiar to us and calls for our own solutions rather than importing ideas from the very people who robbed this continent for their benefit. Hh stood being a puppet. A muzungu anikonde type. Kz

  17. Meanwhile Sunday Chanda and his PF are still politicking and fighting opposition in this time of need for Social cohesion and unity of purpose against a deadly disease. This disease does not respect social or political status and its foolish of Sunday Chanda and his sponsors to continue on this warpath. It’s not late to change course and use his brain to unite Zambians in this time of need. Read and understand what the Cuban minister has just alluded to. Sunday Chanda and his sponsors should lead by example.

  18. I wish I could see order in PF. HH is talking of lock-down of the nation or affected areas. This is a government issue and not a PF issue. I would expect that any response to HH’s request would come from government spokespeeson and not party spokesman . Can we please differentiate between party and national issues. Chanda is not part of the government. He is part of PF. He has no authority to give us government position on matters that affect governance or well being of our nation.

    15

  19. A lockdown would not work in Zambia precisely because PF have made the majority of Zambians poor and unemployed.

PF have made the majority of Zambians survive on a hand to mouth existence with no prospects of employment, that is what Sunday chanda is admitting.

The solution here is aggressive isolation of suspected cases. But you are letting the virus in through KK international airport. If you want to keep the airport open quarantine all arrivals for 2 weeks. Especially Pakistanis and Chinese.

    11
  20. No lock down because you’d rather see them dead, mchew! Sunday Chanda has just admitted that 40% of Zambians live below the poverty line. You should be ashamed!

    13
  21. I dont like this irritating boy Sunday but for once I agree with him. A lock down in Africa is worse the facing Corona virus head on. We should not just copy the west in everything they do we should come up with unique solutions that suit our environment, but sadly we have a President who is always sleeping in State House and does not care for his people. Edgar Lungu is not a leader he should never have been allowed anywhere near statehouse.

    11

  22. In times like this I wish Chishimba Kambwili was President, trust me he would do a very good job at encouraging the nation and leading.

  25. You are scared of a lock down because you have finished everything through corruption nothing left for the poor Zambian government has no money for the poor but i wonder were they used to get money to dash in by-elections these are the results of corruption.shame on you PF.

  27. Let’s make it clear here, Sunday Chanda is no GRZ spokesperson, he still can reply to HH in his capacity as a citizen and without name calling or making HH’s call a political case.
The reason most countries went on lockdown is because they had absolutely no idea how the disease would spread. For ours I’ve seen some simulation cases, that have different scenarios on how bad it would get and frankly it scares me, but hey GRZ has been doing a good job so far.
I think it would be premature for GRZ to initiate a lockdown, GRZ understands what’s at stake if they do it.
It’s the last thing we want.

  28. Chanda is making sense that can only work muma Yadi. If the government has food to distribute during lockdown, very few people will benefit and people will die from stampede. People, please think outside the box don’t bring politics here.

  29. Six months ago HH travelled to the USA and upon his arrival back to Zambia he made an interesting announcement: “my business connections in the USA and Europe are prepared to inject $25 billion in Zambia”. Surprise, Surprise! Come coronavirus his rich friends can’t even promise to buy food for the masses he wants to be under lockdown in slums. This is problem with predatory capitalism.

  30. Ba Sunday Chanda, do you know that you can be objective and less insulting & condescending but still be able to drive your points home. Your piece reeks of insecurity and hatred toward HH. This is the same way you responded to Dr. Sishuwa Sishuwa who actually exposed your myopic and shallow views and took you back to school. With a self-given title in an organization like the PF, full of wolf-packs, we understand the desperate need to remain relevant, or at least appear to be. But the way you come out when defending opinions and positions that deserve more of a courteous debate than political pandering and ignoble behaviour, which you sir are not in short supply of, betrays your standing and values. Have a good day!!

  31. Avoid lockdown twalafwa ne nsala. Most Zambians live hand to mouth. In case of a lock down the government should provide free food to those that cant afford to buy and stock food in bulk. What will kill people is hunger not even the virus.

    3
    2
  32. Lockdown is for prevention purposes. As people stay at home, people who are unwell are identified and subjected to treatment whilst preventing them from infecting others. Actually, Zambia should take advantage of the lockdown that is already imposed in our neighbouring Countries. It will not make much sense to impose lockdown after other countries have lifted theirs.
Even under lockdown, people can still be allowed to access essential goods and services.
Lockdown now is the way to go before it is too late.

  33. How can people in a country where one minister was bragging about roads that can only compare to dubai and where its citizens eat expensive cheese from multinational chain stores? where has all this facade gone under the current situation, where are the pf cadres who brag about kasaka kandalama, where are all those 12.5kg mealie meal bags that they literally throw to the masses during campaigns? how can we die from hunger in just 14 days when we have ba kasaka kandalama?

I dont know how HH will offer his support through donations when one minister bluntly told him to go and donate to his cows when he started donating mealie meal and gen sets to caution the impact of loadsheadding. REMEMBER THE CHAWAMA GEN SET AND KAFUE MEALIE MEAL INCIDENCES?

  34. Its fun how the so called educated are ignorantly crying that they will die from hunger in 14 days, what kind of science do they teach you amphibians?
a human body can go without food and water for 18 to 20 days, so during a lockdown you reduce on eating like bakatubi, ration you food ,thats how you survive a lockdown.

  35. Bushe HH alakwishila mutolo? He must be your nightmare. We are scared of covid 19 and iwe still njenjenje, kuyopa HH.

  36. The problem here is ignorance …lockdown does not mean closing everything with a padlock …of course supermarkets and other services function, RSA’s lockdown is wrong where you close the ports for goods.

  37. In my opinion, the fact that you know a lock-down will hurt so many people is a clear admission of your govt’s failures. you are acknowledging the fact that there is too much poverty in this country. Then why the hell would you want to seek a fresh mandate if not for self preservation?

  38. Based on how he inflicted pain by displacing the most vulnerable villagers in Namwala, lack of remorse for a Bemba Teacher who was beaten by UPND cadres in Zambezi Valley, the reported beating up of a blind old woman at his Lusaka residence, the recent beating up of a UPND Youth Leader spoke his mind (case under investigation) and numerous other clandestine activities, Hakainde Hichilema CANNOT be trusted.

Measures taken by GRZ to control the spread of COVID-19 are yielding promising fruits – a feature that is unique to Zambia. Government MUST IGNORE deceptive political rantings by Hichilema.

    3

  39. The main opposition party chief in Ghana has just donate a huge amount of money to govt to fight the virus. Mr hh maybe you can score some votes by doing the same. It is the most humane and responsible thing to do. Use your connections and fly in some PPE for the health workers. Your politicking and parroting will not help matters. Grow up please.

    2
    4
  40. UPND Youth, PF regime will not accept any donations from HH. Remember what Dolar Folontini Siliya said about maize donated by HH. Dolar asked HH to take donation to feed his cattle. The second reason is that they can not steal that donation as you know PF are thieves, they even steal social cash for widows, orphans and the elderly in Zambia.

  41. Unbelievable! The only reason being it’s HH stating it. Lockdown does not mean you have no conduits to essentials, medicines or other vital services. It means planning and implementing well. Rwanda has closed borders for two weeks. Only goods and cargo allowed. Essential shopping is allowed but travel restricted. In the meantime there is a budget for food and other essentials to be distributed to the vulnerable (this is after 19 cases) There is an extent to which this can still be done in Zambia instead of dismissing it on silly political battles.

As usual because HH is involved, @KZ and @Zambian Citizen are getting excitable without any counter solutions – because they don’t have any! They dream HH day and night.

  42. THE SADDEST PART OF ALL THIS IS THAT EVEN WHEN hh SPEAKS NONSENSE HE IS STILL WORSHIPPED.
NO WONDER HE WILL NEVER BE PRESIDENT OF ZAMBIA THIS CENTURY!!

  43. Sunday Chanda is a dull partisan slimy worm. It is state’s duty to look after it’s citizens. Use army to distribute basic necessities across Zambia. Are all Western countries wrong in locking down their countries? Is Zimbabwe wrong?
This is the time MPs , PSs and President himself shall supervise distribution of food, enforcement of lockdown to save lives of Zambian. It is not time to politique.
Edgar he by back Mukula money, 20% kickbacks collection by politicians and bureaucrats from the Chinese to provide food and medicines to residents in compounds, before it is too late

  44. Zambia First, fortunately a Crank like you cannot see or plan beyond your nose. For you your cheap filthy life revolves around Corrupt handouts from your stinking P.F.
There are 2 scenarios possible now.
    1. Corona virus will wipe you out & that will be the end of your useless existence, as you are just useless chaff not even fit to be used as manure, once you expire.
    2. Like many Zambian professional scroungers, once P.F is out, you will change your coat & move to the next winning team to continue scrounging as usual, like D0r@ the Bedwetter who’s on record insulting Sata, but now eating & praising Sata’s creation P.F or M0nday Social cash Red Lips Chanda & Coffindozer Cheeseman Lusambo all Bonafide Scrounging leeches, that jumped ship as soon as M.M.D, were no longer in Power!…

  45. Cont;
who jumped ship once M.M.D was no longer in Power & now busy br0wn nosing J0n@z b00ty & telling him how great he is & that he’s the best thing since sliced bread, all lies they heaped on Rupiah, when he had the keys to the treasury & Plot #1!!
ZAMBIA FIRST, WE KNOW & HAVE SEEN YOUR KIND BEFORE, YOU MISERABLE DUSTPAN.

  46. This man called Chanda is sick in his head and I wonder why Lungu listens to such quacks? I’ve warned this corona virus is not the game politicking, lock down the country right away to curb the spread of this disease. Learn from developed nations how they are trying to contain the pandemic. It will be very difficult for Zambia to control once it reaches compounds. People will be dying like flies. Everyone is at risk and especially health workers who are on the front line battle. Save thousands if not millions now. This is not time to talk rubbish. Stupid man!

  47. THIS LUNATIC WHO IS IMPERSONATING KZ ALSO…KZ DOES NOT INSULT.. HE IS A GENTLEMAN…..WELL NOT EVERYONE LIKES HIM IN THE POLITICAL ARENA BUT HE IS NOT WHAT THIS LUNATIC IS TRYING TO PORTRAY…
