Government does not want to legislate bigamy-Vice President

Share

Vice president Mutale Nalumango has dispelled social media reports purporting that government wants to legislate bigamy.

The Vice president stated that government cannot legislate that law because Zambia is a Christian nation and it will always remain like that.

She emphasized that what the law reformist proposed was the removal of bigamy from the Penal Code Act and not the Marriage Act.

“This is just a proposal to remove bigamy from the Penal code but leave it in the marriage Act, it is said that opposition political leaders have twisted it to suit their minds,” she stressed.

Ms Nalumango described it as unfortunate that opposition leaders want to politicize the issue by blowing it out of context.

The vice president said this yesterday when she officiated at the Reformed Church of Zambia (RCZ) Silverest congregation indication service in Chogwe.

The Vice president has however commended RCZ for the continued spirit of working with the government by preaching love and peace.

Ms. Nalumango stated that RCZ has also continued to supplement the government’s efforts in the education and health sector which she said need to be commended.

And Reformed Church of Zambia (RCZ) Synod moderator Ackson Banda said the RCZ is a nonpartisan church but will continue to work with the government of the day in a bid to serve the people.

Rev. Banda said the church has been working with the government through the construction of schools and hospitals and will continue to do so.

“We appeal to you, the Vice president, to ensure that as Members of Parliament make laws, they should consider to make laws that are in line with God’s will as the country is a Christen nation,” he stated.

And Chongwe Member of Parliament Sylvia Masebo reminded residents in her constituency to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as everyday people are testing positive.

  1. Each official have their own statement on each topic. Mr Haimbe had a different version to what madam VP is telling us.

  2. What she means is that they are legalizing bigamy, but the Marriage Act is there to solve any problem you may have in your marriages.

  3. How is this even a priority with all your unfulfilled promises. Clearly there’s an agenda behind it for a whole Minister of Justice and Vice president to be concerning themselves with it. Also why attempt to legalize abortions? Is the West putting pressure on this west leaning government to adopt their values? Leave this matter alone. Focus on reducing prices of basic foodstuffs, and fuel, distributing fertilizer, as and youth unemployment.

  4. The Preamble of the 1964 Constitution read thus: The President of the Republic of Zambia shall be Kenneth David Buchizya Kaunda. This Law remained so long after KK had left office. So it was unconstitutional to remove KK from power. In Zambia we have statutes that don’t serve any purpose. Many marriages are contracted under Customary Law, hence the many Chilanga Mulilo and Matebeto. This same Law recognizes polygamy and there are many polygamists in Zambia who attend Christian churches. If it satisfies the pastors even if it doesn’t make sense so what? No one will go to prison in Zambia for having more than 1 wife

  5. This Vice President does not inspire me, imagine Russia invades another country unprovoked and this Vice President says we will not take sides until we talk to regional blocks. This is a straight forward issue where we should take sides, does she mean we should talk to others to know who the aggressor is

  6. This nalumango is delusional. She doesn’t realise her President and majority of upnd come from southern where they marry multiple women. This is what upnd wants plus gay rights so that even men can marry multiple men

  7. Mrs vice president stop using to churches and the pulpit to preach political propaganda. You can’t justify bigamy a sin abhorred by God.. It should not be an issue of debate in parliament in the first place.. It should not be recognise in any national documents to legalise its existence… Bigamy is equivalent to the sin of homosexuality..

  8. #5 Shahel. I’m not surprised that our government has not taken a stand on Ukraine issue because we’re used to let foreign powers run our country albeit indirectly. Russia was not provoked but still went ahead to invade an almost defenseless country. Imagine if South Africa invaded Zambia because of some tribe that speaks Zulu in Zambia. Or DRC because people in Luapula are related to those in the DRC.

  9. Diarrhoea ya hangover sivintu. Nafa ine.

By the way why does it look like it’s first time nalumango has played with an apple laptop

  10. Penal Code Act vs Marriage Act.
Government wants to “delete” the bigamy clause from penal code act and maintain it in the marriage act because that is where it ought to be.
The claim is that offenders shouldn’t be criminalised twice because after all, both Acts are in the same book: The Laws of Zambia. Besides, this Act was institutionalised in 1931 and needs a face lift.

However, if your marriage is of customary law, then bigamy offence is not your portion.

  11. BIGAMY IS EMBEDDED IN OUR CULTURE
MUCH LIKE LUNCH MONEY, LOOTING, WHITE COLLAR CRIME ETC
LEGAL OR NOT ITS HERE TO STAY
SO IS PROSTITION BY THE WAY

  12. Love and peace cannot be enhanced by accepting polygamy since it is no different from adultery. Even if it has become a norm in our society, it is adultery. Women frown on it. It is sad the Vice President, being a woman, cannot help stop adultery and defend demeaning women. Abortion is a sin, it is about killing unborn baby or Russia attacking Ukrain who has no intention of going to war. Women have the same feelings as men.
