Government has issued a statement confirming that there was a shooting incident yesterday that resulted in the loss of life. Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Chief Government spokesperson Kennedy Sakeni said that investigation have been launched. Below is the full statement.

STATEMENT BY HON. KENNEDY SAKENI, MP, MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND BROADCASTING SERVICES AND CHIEF GOVERNMENT SPOKESPERSON ON THE CHONGWE SHOOTING

Government wishes to confirm that, on 14th June, 2013, there was a shooting incident that occurred at Zambia National service (ZNS) Airport Farms where two (02) lives were lost and one (01) injured.

Government regrets the loss of lives and sends sympathies to the bereaved families.

The Nation may wish to know that the problem at ZNS Airport Farms has been a long standing issue since the year 2010. Some of the Kampasa community settled on ZNS land had further encroached and resisted vacation.

It is regrettable that this incident happened in that manner when Government, through the Ministry of Defence has facilitated the allocation of fifty (50) Hectares from ZNS land in liaison with Chongwe District Council for the benefit of the squatters.

Unfortunately, some unscrupulous and selfish individuals have further encroached , taken advantage and started selling some of the land.

Government has since instituted investigations into the incident and wishes to appeal to the people of Kampasa to remain calm.

Hon. Kennedy Sakeni, MP
MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND BROADCASTING SERVICES AND CHIEF GOVERNMENT SPOKESPERSON

  1. It is a very sad development.I`m happy that you guys(government) have taken this approach to this issue.May the trigger happy officers face the full wrath of the law.

  2. Not until a Government deals decisively and impartially with its cadres involved the scourge of illegal land allocations will not end. Cadres of each successive Government since independence feel they are duty bound to engage in land distribution. When the MMD came to power, they promised to curb the vice but instead they heightened it. Now, it is PF cadres and the issue of punishing offenders has remained a talking shop. We need to see people being prosecuted if we are ever going to see sanity prevail. The problem is that senior officials in the ruling parties benefit from illegal land allocation so they turn a blind eye to the vice. In the end, innocent citizens lose their lives.

  3. Mr sakeni How many investigates is your goverment going to do and come up without answers??!! and why are your officers using live bullets???

  4. Lawless is rife in pf govt. People are being beaten and killed by pf militias. We have a violent party in power who specialize in beating and killing innocent people.

  5. Mr Sakeni, Iam disappointed with your statement which seems to justify the killing of
those two men and wounding of others. I expected you to show remorse and offer apology without strings attached for such a terrible mistake of shooting to death unarmed citizens. By referring to those who have been killed as unscrupulous and selfish just shows how you have no regard for human life. Your statement is provoking to say the least.

  6. Some senior PF Official from Luapula must advise Sakeni to read the trend of events before he opens up his mouth. The Solils have offered land to a 1st Lady in Chongwe District. The whole nation knows that a High Authority of this land ordered to apply brutal force on the defenceless and vulnerable people to protect Masebos interests, Masebo is a member of the Lenje-Soli clique that is actively displacing the Bembas from the control of the ruling party. In this regard GBM had no hand in this tragedy. Sakeni must wake up to comprehend the dynamics of the Kabimba vs GBM games. THINK SAKENI, THINK.

  7. What a poor statement coming from the goverment! It’s like a five year old child giving an excuse why he broke his toy. No cohesion what so ever in the statment. I dont think it was written by the goverment. What aShame

    • yes i suppose it was drafted by the Hon Himself as can be seen from its poor quality. Simply put its a very dull statement.

    • That my dear is a Government Statement from the official Government spokesman! When are you people going to believe us when we tell you that the PF Government is only possible in Zambia. This PF clique would have never been allowed into government in countries like Botswana, Kenya, Ghana or Senegal.

    • Hahaha, ati no cohesion.Wansekesha cat pwr can’t you see the shelves are bare with no files ,no books and no computers.Thats why the statement is so disjointed bcoz Sakeni has no love of reading, writting or developin his communication skills.

  8. The letter bears all the hallmarks of poor governance. It does not condemn the shooting and offers excuses and empty sympathies. People were murdered, killed unlawfully, and what you get is a coldblooded explanation, and the usual games of ‘investigations’ that lead to nowhere. It is a pity. There is so much land and a tiny populatin of 13 million, just large enough to fit in one city.

Sorry, using guns is not good governance. Its poor governance and poor planning. It is unacceptable.

  9. The report bears all the hallmarks of poor journalism. It does not state where when why who or how the shooting occurred and the reporter hands his job to the minister’s speech writer. Journalists respect your profession. People were murdered, killed unlawfully, and what you get is a coldblooded explanation,

  10. It’s the spirit of violence instituted by you the PF that is now spreading every where. Zambia is slowly descending into a failed state. Those of you who voted for PF must redeem the whole nation. We can’t be living like this in our own land. Already the watchdog have reported that PF thurgs went to beat mourners at the same funerals and you a minister here is saying the gvt regrets the deaths when you are eady to cause even more deaths. This is what happens when you have a governement that has failed to govern. The best you can do is to resign and let people who have been to school take over.

  12. What is happening to our country kanshi??? Honestly its becoming unrecognizable each day with stories of brutality and incompetence on the part of the current administration. The other day it was police officers using live rounds lelo its the ZNS.And the statement made by the Minister is unsatisfactory. The people responsible for the Murder of those poor defenseless people should be brought to book. Simply putting the issue in the long grass wont do. Basically when our government say they are investigating they are hoping that we forget about it and move on. Arrest and fire those officers now.

  13. We as citizens want to hear the President himself make a statement condemning such unnecessary loss of life. We do not want to hear a Govt spokesman make a statement. Let the President speak, that is if at all there is a President!!!!

  14. Mr Sakeni.what ever the reason a gun is not a solution.we hear masebo, shamenda and the first lady have acquired plots on the same land. These are the people you are protecting.
The President is on record that the solder should shoot any one in western province and is the Command in Chief so whatever is happening the government is aware.
No wonder why should we win in football when poor citizens are been killed by the people who supposed to defend them.

  15. So Mr. Sakeni, you and Sylvia Murambiwa decided to send your goons to make sure the remainder of your victims were beaten into keeping calm? I’m sorry, but PF is the most heartless regime in Africa this century! I’m sure even Bob is taking notes from our resident gumugumu kustate house.

  16. Mr Sakeni should realize that no investigations over killings of people by the state machinery have ever yielded any conclusive results to bring culprits to book. If the final report report says that the Government was on the wrong side the report will be rejected as have all past reports been treated, e.g. the Rodger Chongwe inquiry into the maiming and killing of Lozi people who merely wanted to express an opinion. Instead of wasting money on investigations whose results won’t be useful, Mr Sakeni and other sicklings in the ruling party can publicly use the money meant for this investigation to go out of the country for medical attention which they can’t get from the “adequately equipped and well-stocked hospitals” within the country instead of sneaking out each time they fall sick.

  17. Suck-any sucks big time in written communication skills.Even the empty office shelves with no files, books or computers attest to the fact that he has an aversion to reading and writting.

  18. SEKENI. WHO THIS MAN THINKS IS FOOLING. ANYWAY HE IS FOOLING ZAMBIANS. HE IS MUSEKENI
