State your position on the Black Mountain DEGHA challenges Government

Democratic Governance and Human Rights Advocates DEGHA has challenged government to state its position on the infamous Black Mountains in Wusakile Township of Kitwe.

DEGHA president Gerald Mutelo said government should come out clear on who owns the infamous black mountain which was a damp site for copper waste in Wusakile Township .

Mr. Mutelo’s concerns comes after some Chinese nationals were on Tuesday stoned by “illegal miners” commonly known as jerabos after they tried to start mining the mountain with a excavator.

Mr. Mutelo said the conflicting statements by government on ownership are a source of violence and that they should tell the nation who owns the mountains.

“The minister of mines has issued a lot of statements in the past that the black mountain in Kitwe will be given to the community as a way of empowerment to the local people. The elections campaigns are over, the minister is quite,”.

“Government must issue a comprehensive statement over the black mountain ,will the government give it to the community or what is happening especially on the ownership of the black mountain, who is the owner? Is it the government or the private sector? It is very important for government leaders to be honoring their promises to the people like on the issue of the black mountain therefore we are appealing to the minister of mines or the chief government spokesperson to inform the nation on government Plans concerning the black mountain,” Mutelo said.

“The question is, are they still maintaining their promise or what is the current status because nation wants to know regarding their campaign promises,” he asked.

In January during the campaigns President Lungu said the mountain will be given to the youths as part of empowerment.

  1. THE MOUNTAIN WAS BOUGHT BY CHAMBISHI METALS DURING

INITIAL PRIVATIZATION. THEY PROCESSED THE SAME AT THEIR

NOW CLOSED SMELTER IN CHAMBISHI TO PRODUCE COPPER AND

COBALT METALS.ASK THEM TO STATE WHAT THEIR POSITION

IS AS AT NOW. IF THEY SOLD IT THEY WILL TELL YOU.

BY THE WAY WHY DO WE KEEP ON TRIVIALIZING A MOUNTAIN

THAT IN ERNST CAN GENERATE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS

MONTHLY FOR THE COUNTRY? ANSWER .. IGNORANCE.

THOSE WHO ARE SERIOUS ABOUT THAT POTENTIAL REVENUE

SOURCE SHOULD COME OUT IN THE OPEN. WE ONLY NEED ABOUT

US$20 MILLION TO START GENERATING US$10 MILLION

MONTHLY FOR THE NEXT TWENTY YEARS.

HOW MUCH MONEY IS THAT? AND WE ARE STILL WATCHING?

ARE WE A COLLECTIVE SHAME OF OURSELVES?

  2. The smelter at Chambishi Metals was designed, and constructed to process that material into copper and cobalt.
That “slag dump” was built up before Zambia started producing cobalt as a by-product, so it is rich in cobalt.
Why is the Chambishi Metals smelter idling? Questions such as this need to be asked by the ministers of Mines, Commerce and Finance?
Come on guys, let us pull together with a sense of responsibility, dedication and patriotism!

  3. Let the mountain go by its name, “Black Mountain” it is therefore, for black Zambian not Chinese Zambian, Boers zambian, nor indians zambian.
