UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) vice-president for administration Geoffrey Mwamba has been summoned by Kasama Police for holding political meetings without notifying the police.

According to the Police in Kasama, Mr Mwamba has allegedly gone into hiding after police in Kasama sought him for “an interview” over meetings he held.

Northern Province acting commissioner of police Lackson Sakala said in an interview yesterday that Mr Mwamba has allegedly been holding political meetings without notifying the police.

Mr Sakala said Mr Mwamba has allegedly gone into hiding but that the police will “fish” him out.

“We want him to come to the police tomorrow for some interviews. He was holding meetings without notifying the police.

“He is in hiding and we are looking for him,” Mr Sakala said.

He urged Mr Mwamba to lead by example as a person who has served as a member of Parliament (MP).

“He has actually been a law-maker, so he should lead by example and abide by the laws of Zambia. If he wants to hold any meeting, he should notify the police,” he said.

Mr Sakala said the police will diligently execute their duties and firmly deal with individuals who break the law, regardless of their political affiliation.

“Anything to the contrary, we are not going to spare anyone because no-one is above the law,” he said.

And in a posting on his Facebook wall, Mr Mwamba admits that the police are looking for him and he will avail himself today.

In a posting on his Facebook wall, Mr Mwamba admitted that the police were looking for him.

“Later on they brought a police call-out to my home and I have agreed to meet them at the station at 12 tomorrow [today],” the Facebook posting reads in part.

Nawakwi condemned for questioning where First Lady Esther Lungu is getting huge sums of money for donations

36

PF Media and Publicity Committee Vice chairperson Sunday Chanda has said it is shocking for FDD leader to question First Lady Esther Lungu, when she never questioned the former First ladies for their charitable work. This is in reference to an article published by the Post newspaper where Ms Nawakwi wondered which resources Esther Lungu was using to campaign for President Edgar Lungu, saying she was not the ‘Santa Claus’ of Zambia.
‘We know that the President is planning early elections, sometime in February or March, and that is why she is all over the country campaigning’.

Ms Nawakwi said Mrs Lungu wants to pretend she is distributing gifts on a charitable exercise when, in fact, her clear motive is to campaign for the President.

“I don’t know if between the President and the first lady, they have agreed that the President will do PR work outside the country and she will fill the vacuum because the work she is doing is what I would love to see the President do; to go to villages and find out how people are doing.

I don’t know if between the President and the first lady, they have agreed that the President will do PR work outside the country and she will go to villages

“It is very clear that the first lady is using money from the social cash transfer window. And I want to tell the donors that the money they gave us as a country, which was supposed to be distributed to the vulnerable groups, through established channels; the churches, community development and all the agreed institutions which were the platforms through which this money was supposed to be delivered, unfortunately, because this government is so desperate, they have diverted money from the social cash transfer and given to the first lady,” she said.

‘Now she is the one who is being seen as the bearer of this message and pretending to the world that she is generous. She is not the Santa Claus of this country. We have no objections to her setting up an NGO, raising money and doing charitable work. But we take great exception for the first lady to use money from community development, for Ministry of Gender and from the social cash transfer window, and I challenge them to say that this money they are using is not government money’.

I challenge them to say that this money they are using is not government money.
But you can’t expect that you can develop this country through charity. When you arrive at a place where there is no hospital, no facilities and you give them 25 bags of mealie-meal and some blankets and say ‘These are gifts from State House’, meanwhile, you have spent so much fuel flying there just to deliver 25 bags of mealie-meal, what is the job of the department of disaster management? I want to see the Vice-President doing the work we gave her,” she said.

The PF media and Publicity vice chairperson however said Ms Nawakwi never condemned other former First ladies including Mrs. Maureen Mwanawasa, Mrs Thandiwe Banda and Dr. Christine Kaseba because there is nothing strange and wrong about the works these mothers did while their respective husbands served as Heads of State. He advised that it will be counter-productive for Ms. Nawakwi to vent her annoyance on another woman who is doing so much to profile the place of women in Zambia and called on the women movement in the country to reinforce what First lady Mrs Lungu is doing for the poor communities in our country.

United Party for Nation Development (UPND) President Hakainde Hichilema has observed that the challenges the country is facing could be that God is signaling that time is up for the Patriotic Front.

Mr Hichilema says this is why everything that the PF government lays its hand on is going wrong.

Mr. Hichilema has cited the continued poor performance of the Kwacha, increased load shedding, increase in fuel and none availability of jobs in Zambia as some of challenges that point to the ruling PF’s exit from power.

He has told Qfm News by telephone that this means that whether the ruling party allegedly manipulates the outcome of by-elections by buying candidates, the people’s voice will prevail very soon.

Mr. Hakainde states that he is firmly convinced that come 2016, the PF government will exit from government because they have allegedly failed to deliver.

He notes that the challenges facing the Zambian people under the PF government can only be likened to UNIP days of the late 80s and the early 90s.

The UPND leaders wonders why anyone would therefore find attraction in the ruling PF, which he says has nothing to offer.

Mr. Hichilema says he in fact finds it disgraceful reports suggesting that ruling PF has now resorted to buying opposition political party candidates during by-elections.

Mr Kambwili says cabinet approved the creation of the institution last week.

He said this will provide education loans to students taking up studies in institutions of higher learning.

Mr Kambwili said a mechanism will be put in place to ensure that government recovers the money loaned to the students upon them starting work.

He said it is the wish of government to ensure that every child attains higher education.

Patriotic Front -PF Deputy Secretary General Mumbi Phiri has castigated opposition FDD leader Edith Nawakwi for questioning First Lady Esther Lungu’s charity programmes.

Mrs Phiri says the First Lady has every right to interact with citizens in any part of the country contrary to Ms Nawakwi’s suggestions as quoted in today’s edition of the Post Newspaper.

The PF Deputy Secretary General wondered whether Ms Nawakwi wants Mrs Lungu to be restricted to the confines of State House when past First Ladies conducted similar outreach programs.

Speaking to ZNBC in Lusaka on Monday, Mrs Phiri said it is wrong for Ms Nawakwi to focus her energies on personalised attacks against the First family at the expense offering credible checks and balances.

Ms Nawakwi is quoted in today’s Post Newspaper as calling on the First Lady not to venture into the political arena.

FDD slams planned court action

Kitwe Constitution
The opposition FDD- leadership on the Copperbelt has condemned the reported plan in which the Grand Coalition on the People Driven Constitution and the Law Association of ZAMBIA-LAZ- allegedly intend to go to court this week to block the Constitution Amendment Bill.

FDD Copperbelt Provincial Chairman Yotam Mtayachalo says the plan is premature and may just deny Zambians a new constitution before the 2016 general elections.

Mr Mtayachalo says all stakeholders should give dialogue a chance and explore other avenues such as seeking an audience with President Edgar Lungu on the way forward on the constitution.

He says this will afford parties a chance to iron out areas of misunderstandings before taking the legal route.

Mr Mtachalo says the court action will delay the whole process resulting in the 2016 general elections being held under the old constitution.

He said all parties can still strike a compromise for the country to achieve a people driven constitution.

The Patriotic-PF on Sunday announced that it had unearthed a scheme in which the Grand Coalition on the People Driven Constitution and Law Association of ZAMBIA-LAZ allegedly intend to go to court this week to block the Constitution Amendment Bill.

PF Media and Publicity Vice Chairperson Sunday Chanda charged at a media briefing in Lusaka, that such schemes by the Grand Coalition and LAZ will only frustrate efforts to give Zambians a new constitution.

Sex-starved woman sues hubby

court

A 30-YEAR-OLD Kitwe woman has pleaded with the Garneton Local court to compel her husband of 13 years to stop denying her sex.
Helen Chinyingi, who is currently on separation with her husband, told the court that her husband sleeps with his clothes on. She was suing for reconciliation.
This was heard before senior local court magistrate Fredrick Ndhlovu in a matter in which Helen sued Rodgers Chinyingi, 39, for reconciliation. The two got married in 2001 and have five children.
Helen narrated before the court that all was well in their marriage until she started a business.
She said she started helping out in the home because of her business but Chinyingi started accusing her of making money out of prostitution.
“I don’t even remember the last time he touched me. I love my husband that’s why I have brought him to court so that the magistrate can counsel us on how to live as a husband and wife,” she told the bench.
She said at times Chinyingi does not speak to her for four months yet they live in the same house.
But Chinyingi told the court that the money Helen was handling was too much for the type of business she was doing.
“I don’t know where my wife gets money from for her to be buying items such as a two-piece kitchen units and other items,” he narrated.
He told the court that Helen had a know-it-all attitude which puts him off.
Magistrate Ndhlovu adjourned the matter to September 1, so that parents from both sides could give their side of the story.

Load shedding to worsen as ZESCO further cuts generation levels at Kariba

State power utility ZESCO has announced that it has cut its generation capacity from the current 540MW to 305 MW to avert a premature shutdown of the Kariba North Bank Power Station.

ZESCO Senior Manager for Marketing and Public Relations Bessie Banda announced during a news conference that water levels at Kariba have worsened.

Ms Banda said continued generation of power from Kariba of around 540MW would have meant completely shutting down the power plant.

She said the worsening water levels have been occasioned by the usage patterns that have developed since load shedding commenced.

‘What we have observed is that most customers are over using power once supply is restored, most of them are not having power for close to 8 Hours and once supply is restored, they are over using both power which is now defeating the purpose of load shedding,’ Ms Banda said.

Power deficit hits poultry sector

The power deficit in the southern African region has negatively affected poultry producers in Zimbabwe and Zambia, a latest report on the African poultry sector has noted.

Currently, Zambia and the entire southern African region are faced with the challenge of electricity deficit.

“Power woes hobbling the southern African region are hitting poultry producers in Zimbabwe and Zambia. The current situation has been devastating for poultry producers.

The report says while Zambian and Zimbabwean poultry producers are grappling with power cuts, Angola destroyed about 11 million illegally imported chicken eggs this month as African countries try to control cheap poultry products imports that may constrain local producers.

However, according to expert, local producers are constrained by rising input costs and are unable to meet demand, leading to shortages of poultry which is a key protein nutrient for the region’s population.

Meanwhile, the report noted that some poultry farmers in Mansa have turned to charcoal as an alternative source of energy to warm up their poultry.

Mansa poultry producers’ chairperson Dennis Ng’andwe said almost all its members are complaining that the chicken business has become very expensive because they have to spend on feed, vaccine, charcoal, maize bran and other costs to ensure they stay afloat.

“Information about areas that hold investment potential in the poultry sector is very scant. In addition, very little is documented about the interest of Zambian investors in local and international poultry industry partnerships,” Mr Ng’andwe said.

In South Africa, the poultry producers association pleaded with their government to seek ways to ensure power suppliers for poultry producers.
The association chief executive officer Kevin Lovell indicated that chicken slaughterhouses that processed 13,000 chickens per hour could not rely on generators for sufficient power supplies.

How to curb Zambia’s high unemployment rate – Hakainde Hichilema

26
Zambian youth
Zambian youth

It is no secret we are suffering from high unemployment. The PF first came with a promise of 1 million new jobs and now just this month they have come with the promise of 500,000 new jobs without any evidence they have delivered on the first promise. It is not surprising that such statements from politicians have come to mean very little. Rather than committing to a number let us commit to an approach.

Government must do two things as a priority.

Firstly, we have all heard of cases where despite there being a job vacancy or contracting opportunity those looking for employment or contracts do not have the required skills. We need to match our education and training initiatives to the jobs and opportunities available. Government can only do this by regularly consulting with industry and education professionals to spot the opportunities and then acting decisively. So for example if we see there are more investments made in developing hotels then we should increase training opportunities in hospitality and related services such as catering.

Look at how Rwanda is managing its economy and achieving growth rates of 7% and more

Secondly, Government must support and empower budding entrepreneurs. By developing the relevant skills in our youths we can create a positive knock-on effect. For example, if we provide training opportunities and support to 5 aspiring entrepreneurs then each may go on to start businesses that employ 5 more people and then we have 30 people in jobs as a result of that first bit of support. I would like to see these investments targeted at youths who will help us develop our value-addition industries because this is an area where the knock-on benefit will be considerable both in terms of job creation and supporting the Kwacha.

We do not need to re-invent the wheel here but look at what our brothers and sisters have done elsewhere. For example, look at how Rwanda is managing its economy and achieving growth rates of 7% and more. They do not have our rich mineral resources but they are investing in their people to drive growth. While our resources are limited, these interventions do not need to be expensive if they are well targeted. Consultation is free, prioritisation will help us target available funds at areas with biggest impact, and there is a great deal to be gained from support in terms of knowledge transfer and information sharing, which are low cost interventions. They just require vision and good planning skills.

Zambian model , Amanda Sibeso Wamunyima , has been crowned Ms America, one of the most competitive shows in the United States of America.

Amanda beat the 50 other beauties representing their states in the USA. She holds the Ms. Florida crown, and that crown allowed her to compete on the National level as Ms America.

Ms-America-2She now starts a long journey as Ms. America a role that involves a lot of social advocacy. This however will not be something new to Amanda who is currently the CEO of Miss Zambia USA, a beauty pageants for Zambian beauties who live in the USA.

Zambians should be proud of this achievement, and extend their congratulatory praise to Ms Amanda Sibeso Wamunyima for flying the Zambian flag to the highest.

Ms. America, not Miss America, has most of the trappings of a typical beauty pageant – the gowns, the interviews, the glamorous head shots.

But there are differences: It attracts women ages 26 to into their 60s. It doesn’t require a swimsuit or a talent. The winner is asked to use her crown to advance a worthy cause.

CEO Susan Jenkse, an Irvine resident, was the first Ms. America winner when she won as Ms. Colorado in 1997; she raised awareness about violence in schools just a couple years before the Columbine High School shootings in her home state.
