Pictures of Hakainde Hichilema’s tour and community work in Lusaka’s Linda Compound

In his continued tour to thank voters and party mobilization, UPND President Hakainde Hichilema was on Monday in Kanyama Constituency’s Linda Compound of Lusaka also doing some community work.

Mr. Hichilema, who bemoaned the levels of hunger and poverty in the country, spent the whole day with the people of Linda Compound to appreciate their daily challenges.

He reiterated the need to prioritize job creation especially for the youths in the country by promotion of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) through provision of affordable loan schemes.

The UPND leader helped in offloading a truck of mealie meal and drinks that were being offloaded into a shop much to the delight of onlookers.

Some of the small-scale traders openly wept to Mr. Hichilema as they complained about huge decline in sales and business due to harsh prevailing economic conditions.

But Mr. Hichilema told them that as a businessman himself, he fully understood the prevailing harsh economic conditions where products are even getting expired in the shelves because majority Zambians have no disposable incomes to buy.

He also spent time doing community works with people who are disabled where he was told that this group of people was being neglected by successive Governments.

Mr. Hichilema promised that once he forms Government people that are disabled will receive special packages to alleviate their suffering.

The UPND leader was particularly touched when he visited a number of households which included mama Theresa Chisenga Muyenga a visually impaired small-scale farmer, who shared the challenges she was facing in the PF government.

He concluded his community tour by addressing party officials and some of the residents.

Mr. Hichilema urged UPND leadership countrywide to embrace new members and treat everyone as equals in the party.

PF has failed, last years fuel reduction was a campaign gimmick -Hakainde Hichilema

UPND President Hakainde Hichilema says he is glad that he has been vindicated since he warned Zambians that reduction in the fuel pump prices last year was only campaign gimmicks.

Mr Hichilema said all his warning about the negative implications of PF bad policies have now come to pass.

He said what the PF did is common with politicians who only sell people’s hopes back to the voters, in return for the right to exercise political power over the voting population.

The UPND leader was speaking when he rode on buses to Mandevu Constituency areas such as Kabanana, Chazanga, and Mazyopa yesterday and interacted with local people who were delighted to see him as he also attended some funerals in the area.

Mr Hichilema said it has been over 100 days after the presidential by-election of 2015 and 100 days in office for President Edgar Lungu and close to four years for the PF government.

‘In line with the Holy Scriptures, we are enjoined to be grateful (1 Thessalonians 5:18), against this background we in the UPND would like to thank God for preserving our country during the post elections violence. We are also thankful to all Zambians for performing their civic duty of exercising their right to vote for the political parties of their choice,’ Mr Hichilema said.

‘In my interaction with residents, markeeters, traders, and party officials we shared with our beloved Zambians to persevere and embrace the culture of hard work because tough and hard times will always come as a result of unfavourable economic policies put by those in power hence an increase in the cost of living in the country.’

He added, ‘Together we can come up with solutions for our country because we know the anguish of not having enough money to pay for the children school fees, and uniforms, or the need to make up the shortfall at the beginning of each month, struggling with house rentals, etc. Just yesterday there was an increase in fuel prices, putting more pressure on the resource envelope of most households.

Mr Hichilema said Zambia needs a clear set of solutions to solve the economic hardships and unemployment challenges. He said women and youths face specific employment challenges such legal barriers, lack of access to finance and cultural norms.

‘These challenges often force women to work in jobs that pay less and are less secure. Young people are almost three times more likely to be unemployed and are more likely to work in informal jobs,’ Mr Hichilema said.

‘It is against this background that we call upon the PF government to urgently provide workable solutions to address the plight of the majority poor masses not endless bye-elections at the expense of addressing economic challenges in the country.’

Chinese Owl hunters granted Bail

Court hammer
THE Lusaka Magistrate’s Court has granted K5,000 cash bail to two Chinese nationals charged with criminal trespass after they were allegedly caught poaching on a farm in Lusaka’s Makeni.

Yi Shilei, 33, and Liu Bing, 27, are charged with two counts of criminal trespass.

When the matter came up before acting chief resident magistrate Aridah Chulu, the two pleaded not guilty to the offence and asked the court to grant them bail.

Mrs Chulu granted them K5,000 cash bail, with two working sureties who should be Zambian nationals, in the sum of K10,000.
The court also asked the two to surrender their passports.

The duo paid the K5,000 but the court said it wanted Zambian sureties from recognised local institutions.

Particulars are that Yi and Liu on April 8 this year, in Lusaka jointly and whilst acting together with other persons unknown, unlawfully entered Dirk Jan Muijis’ property with intent to commit a felony, which annoyed Mr Muijis.

Police last week arrested four Chinese nationals for poaching on Mr Muijis’ farm in Makeni after he complained that some people had been shooting animals on his farm.

Two of the four Chinese were shot and wounded while trying to escape from the police. The police arrested Yi and Liu while the other two suspects are nursing injuries in the University Teaching Hospital.

Police arrest 42 Political cadres carrying placards demanding land

zambiaPolicelogo
POLICE in Lusaka have arrested 42 suspected political cadres for alleged conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

Lusaka Province commissioner of police Charity Katanga said in an interview yesterday that out of the 42 suspects, 22 are women.

Ms Katanga said the suspects were arrested yesterday around 11:30 hours on Church Road near Lusaka Central Police Station.

Ms Katanga said police have detained the suspects, aged between 21 and 52, and they will appear in court today.

She said the cadres were marching carrying placards demanding land.

She said police have established that the cadres protested because their colleague identified as Gift Ng’andwe was arrested in connection with alleged illegal land transactions at the Galaunia Farm in Lusaka’s Chamba Valley.

Ms Katanga warned that police will not allow lawlessness and advised people to use the right channels to air grievances.

“We will not allow lawlessness to take centre stage in this country,” Ms Katanga said.

Police last Friday raided part of Galaunia Farms in Mutumbi area of Lusaka, where suspected political cadres were allegedly illegally allocating land and part of the group has since sued Galaunia Farm.

Meanwhile, CHAMBO NG’UNI report that a 22-year-old man of Kapiri Mposhi has allegedly beaten his 55-year-old father to death on suspicion that he was using witchcraft to have sex with his wife in her sleep.

The suspect identified as Michelo Miyoba is alleged to have used an axe handle to beat up his father Albert Miyoba and inflicting multiple injuries on him, which subsequently led to his death

Central Province deputy commissioner of police Edwin Bwanga said in an interview yesterday that the incident happened on Sunday between 20:00 hours and 21:00 hours.

Mr Bwanga said Michelo attacked Mr Muyoba while he was trying making a call on his cell phone.

“Michelo allegedly killed his father on suspension that he was practicing witchcraft.

“The body was found about 200 metres from his house in a pool of blood with a deep cut under the ear and it also had a bruised neck,” Mr Bwanga

He said Mr Miyoba had earlier differed with Michelo on how to share their maize harvest.

Mr Bwanga said Michelo bolted after allegedly committing the crime and is on the run.

He said the body is in Kabwe General Hospital mortuary and police have launched a manhunt for the suspect.

Government cautions farmers against offloading new maize stock

GOVERNMENT has cautioned farmers particularly those in areas recently hit by dry spells against offloading all their new maize stock to unscrupulous buyers.

Some officers in the Ministry of Agriculture were currently carrying out a national crop focus survey to ascertain crop yields and needy areas of relief food.

Deputy Minister in the Office of the Vice President Stephen Kampyongo urged farmers to be patient and desist from selling their maize stock to traders who would exploit them.

He was speaking in an interview in reaction to some farmers in parts of Southern Province such as Chief Chikanta’s area in Kalomo who had already started selling this year’s maize yields.

“It’s important for farmers to consider reserving adequate maize instead of rushing to sale all new maize stock especially in those areas where there were dry-spells,” he said.

He said, though the Government was ready to distribute relief food to needy areas, it was important for people to be responsible and secure sufficient maize for consumption.

Mr Kampyongo said that it would be irresponsible for some people to offload their maize and wait for relief food from the Government.

Some parts of Zambia were expected to be hit by hunger after experiencing crop failure due to the dry spells as recently revealed by the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU).

The country was expected in the next few weeks to have food shortage which would leave millions of Zambians in need of food relief.

The DMMU has since prepared itself for relief food distribution mainly in Western, Southern and parts of Central provinces.

Court hammer
THE Lusaka Magistrate court has committed a United Party for National Development (UPND) cadre Trevor Mwiinde who was arrested during the January 20, 2015 Presidential election campaigns in Chilenje Township to the High Court to undergo trial.

Mwiinde is charged with aggravated robbery. Mwiinde was part of the unruly crowd that attacked people at Chris Corner in Chilenje while UPND party president Hakainde Hichilema held a political rally at Lusaka’s Woodlands stadium.

When the matter came up for mention before Lusaka magistrate Humphrey Chitalu today, Mwiinde who is represented by Martha Mushipe from Mushipe and Associates was informed by the court that the director of public prosecutions (DPP) has issued instructions for his committal to the High Court.

Mr Chitalu said just as he had explained to Mwiinde when he first appeared in court, the offence he is charged with is triable by the High Court.

He said that since the DPP’s chambers has issued the instructions; Mwiinde would stop appearing before his court but High Court.

Ms Mushipe requested for the matter to be dealt with expedience on grounds that Mwiinde was admitted to hospital as such, any further prolonged stay in detention would make him to be prone to other diseases.

The State informed the court that the matter would be dealt with the expedience it deserves adding that there was a likelihood of Mwiinde being cause listed in the next session of the high court. Recently, Mwiinde’s pictures went viral when he was pictured chained to a hospital bed at UTH where he was undergoing treatment following an illness.

Cozmo Mumba to file criminal charges against Eric Chanda for defaming President Lungu

NEW Revolution Party (NRP) president Cozmo Mumba has announced he will tomorrow file criminal charges against Fourth Revolution (4R) party leader Eric Chanda for defaming President Edgar Lungu.

Mr Chanda was quoted in the Post Newspaper last week saying President Edgar Lungu has no moral right to warn State House staff against clubbing because the first assignment he took after his election was to go to Mfuwe to socialise, club and play pool.

“First of all, fatherly advice should be welcomed by any citizen of this country but surely, everybody will bear me witness that comrade Edgar Lungu should be the last person to warn his aides against clubbing. Because it is not too long ago when he himself as President, as custodian of State House, went, in the name of a retreat, to Mfuwe to socialise and club, play pool and all sorts of things. But how will the youngsters, his aides that he is warning, how will they take the warning?” he asked.

Over the weekend Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Chishimba Kambwili said the police should pursue Fourth Revolution Party (4R) president Eric Chanda for allegedly defaming President Lungu.

“Government takes very strong exception at the unbecoming behaviour of people defaming the President with impunity, Surely, even if there is freedom of expression, can one go and say the President has no moral right to advise aides at State House. Can you tell your own father that you have no moral rights to talk to me? Gentlemen, I think we are losing it,” he said.

The eccentric Cozmo Mumba has since taken the mantle of pushing for a case against the youthful 4R president Eric Chanda for defaming president Lungu.

He posted on his Facebook page this afternoon; “Tomorrow the 13th of May 2015, I Cozmo Mumba president of the National Revolution Party will be at The Lusaka Division Police Command to officially open a criminal docket against Comrade Eric Chanda, president of the Fourth Revolution Party for defaming the character of the head of state. All media institutions are advised to be at central police awaiting my arrival at 10:00hrs. The police are already expecting me.”

HH says Access to Information Law must be enacted, as he challenges Lungu to hold a press conference

UPND's Hakainde Hichilema
UPND’s Hakainde Hichilema

UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema says the Access to Information Law is long overdue and the threat to delay it, indefinitely, is the latest example of betrayal of the Zambian people by the PF Government.

Mr Hichilema in a statement said, “We share the concerns of our brothers and sisters who have spoken out following comments by President Lungu that he may not enact the Access to Information Bill into law. The law is already long overdue and the threat to delay it, indefinitely, is the latest example of betrayal of the Zambian people by the PF Government.”

The opposition leader added that the Access to Information Law was another one of the PF’s election promises in 2011 that 4 years later they are still delaying on.

“Its introduction is widely recognized as being important for both citizens and media representatives so that they can have access to vital information. Government’s unwillingness to empower Zambians with this freedom is disappointing and demonstrates once again their first thought is self-interest, rather than serving the Zambian people, as should be the case,” he said.

Mr Hichilema said that President Lungu’s reference of the media mishandling sensitive information is absurd to say the least. The revelation that his Government borrowed US$192 million to buy military equipment shouldn’t be a basis for acting in this manner. There is no security risk as he puts it. As a matter of fact whatever involves public money must never be a secret. It’s unfortunate that President Lungu, a lawyer, thinks that way.

Mr Hichilema continued, “This is perhaps unsurprising from a Government that has still not held a press conference after more than 100 days in office. State House must improve its communications further. It is only right that the President should update the country regularly on the progress being made to deliver on election promises rather than trying to keep people in the dark.

No doubt President Lungu is concerned about exposing himself to questions and criticism for the other areas in which PF election promises have been quickly thrown aside once they have won. In the UPND we have still not given up our fight for the new constitution as it contains vital provisions to protect the human rights of Zambians and to limit the power of the presidency. Now 1238 days overdue, hope that it will be delivered by the PF is fading however.

Unfortunately at the same time as Government is pushing the new people driven constitution to one side and toying with the Access to Information Bill, concerns continue to reach us of pressure being exerted on several media houses by Government officials and even Ministers. In addition, in the opposition we are almost daily reminded of the need for urgent reform of the Public Order Act, as police officers are sent to disrupt our peaceful meetings with community members.

We are ready to stand alongside other civil society, media and our fellow opposition to push for delivery of the Access to Information Law, and in protest against the continued delay to the new constitution and abuse of the Public Order Act.

We must unite together to protect our democracy and the fundamental rights of each and every Zambian.”

Kwacha to stabilise due to reduced liquidity

2

kwacha
FINANCE Bank anticipates that reduced Kwacha liquidity in the market is expected to stabilise the local currency in the short term.

In its daily market update, the bank says the local unit was relatively stable on Friday as intra-day movements could only be found in the K7.30 and K7.40 band.

The Kwacha opened trading on a strong note at K7.31 and K7.33, and went on to hit an intra-day low of K7.37 and K7.39, closing later at K7.33 and K7.35.

“Reduced Kwacha liquidity remains the main stabilising factor in the short-term,” the statement reads.

Similarly, Zanaco Bank says the Kwacha is expected to continue trading in a narrow range with a bias to gain, as reduced local currency liquidity and dollar inflows into next Thursday’s treasury bill auction from investors abroad.

The local unit is anticipated to trade in the range of K7.30 and K7.40 in the near-term.

On Friday, the local unit was largely stable against the dollar with little activity witnessed on the day.

The bank says thin flows from corporate and interbank players witnessed the local unit hold steady against the dollar from an opening of K7.35 and K7.37 to reach highs of K7.34 and K7.36 on the bid and offer respectively where it closed off for the day.

Meanwhile, Cavmont Bank, in its market report, says despite the steady rise in copper prices, the local unit has failed to move in tandem owing to mismatch in demand and supply.

The Kwacha closed trading at K7.34 and K7.36 rebounding positively by 0.41 percentage points on Friday.

On Friday, the local unit opened trading at K7.35 and K7.37 and depreciated marginally by 0.27 percentage point against the dollar in early trade at K7.37 and K 7.39.

It, however, says improved corporate inflows helped the Kwacha to recover and witnessed it touch K7.33 and K7.35 for bid and offer respectively.

Kalaba toasts Zambia win

1

Captain Rainford Kalaba says it is a great feeling to see Zambia maintain a winning run.

Zambia beat Malawi 2-0 in a friendly on Sunday to see them pick up their second straight win after the 2015 AFCON following the March 29 home win over Rwanda by the same margin.

“We have done a good thing and we will keep the same spirit as we prepare for Cosafa,” Kalaba said.

“We are maintaining the winning spirit I think it is good for the team and morale.”

Goals from Christopher Munthali in the 23rd minute and Kondwani Mtonga in the 34th minute handed Zambia the win at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

Scorecard: Tanzania call-up Zesco striker

2

Tanzania have called up Zesco United striker Juma Luizio for the guest sides’ appearance at the 2015 Cosafa Castle Cup.

The Zesco striker is one of two foreign-based players Tanzania have summoned for the tournament to be held in South Africa from May 17-31.

The ex-Azam striker joined Zesco last July but has been sparingly used by Zesco coach George Lwandamina.

Luizio’s call-up now means Zesco are likely to be without six players on Cosafa Cup duty.

Already goalkeeper Jacob Banda, midfielders Kondwani Mtonga and Justin Zulu including strikers Winston Kalengo and Jackson Mwanza have been call-up for Zambia duty.
