Calls for Sata to rest unjustified – Mpombo

Opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President George Mpombo says President Michael Sata’s cracking voice and inability to complete his last Friday’s speech to Parliament does not justify calls that the President should take a rest from work.

Dr. Mpombo says he personally does not think the health of an individual should be judged on his voice as it is a fact that there could be so many issues that can cause the voice of a person to crack up.

He has told Qfm news in an interview that he also thinks that President Sata’s inability to complete his speech when he officially opened the 4th meeting of the 11th secession of Parliament could have been that he was only tired.

Dr. Mpombo says this does not however mean that President is unable to execute his duties.

He says people in the country should realize that the health of a person is between God and the individual himself and that with God there is nothing impossible when it comes to healing people.

The PDP leader says it is also important to be mindful that it is not prompt for an individual is get back from what he has termed the vagaries of health as it takes time to fully get strong.

He says the fact that President Sata is on his fit he does believe that he is therefore able to perform his duties which is the more reason that the President has to this effect traveled to the US for the New York UN summit.

Dr. Mpombo has since maintained that President still appears to be fit as a fiddle and that what people ought to do in the country is to give him support and see how he progresses.

He says the signs that the Head of State is displaying are very bold and inspiring especially that he is able to appear in public for people to see him walk.

Government denies ” barring ” private media last Friday

Government says it did not bar any media organization from covering last Friday’s official opening of Parliament.

Chief government spokesman Joseph Katema says 129 media practitioners were accredited to cover the event by the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS).

Dr Katema, who is also Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, said although 129 media practitioners were accredited, the logical arrangements of the official opening of Parliament were left to the National Assembly.

ZANIS reports that the Information and Broadcasting minister said this during a press briefing in Lusaka today.

He said government has progressively continued to build an environment where the media freely and responsibly collect and disseminate information to the public.

Dr Katema said government has sworn to protect the constitution, which is anchored on the protection of human rights and freedoms citizens with freedom of expression being among them.

He said in the same spirit of upholding the tenets of democracy, the Executive wing of government will not interfere in the work of the Judiciary and the Legislature.

Dr Katema said government’s commitment to freedom of expression is evidenced by government’s freeing of the airwaves through the operationalization of the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) Act which has led to 70 radios stations and 12 Television stations operating in the country.

People surrounding President Sata are like ticks, they have no life outside the him-FDD

Forum for Democracy and Development spokesperson Antonio Mwanza stresses a point during the meeting to demand for the release of the draft Zambian constitution

The opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) says people close to republican President Michael Sata are feeding from him like ticks and do not have the best interest for either the president or the country at heart.

And the opposition party says the President is not in a physical position to continue presiding over the affairs of the nation as both the pictures and voice can bare witness to his illness.

Speaking in an interview FDD spokesperson Antonio Mwanza described people close to the president whom he said were in the best position to advise him to either take a leave or retire such wife Christen Kaseba and uncle Alexander Chikwanda as ticks sucking the president’s life away as they have no life beyond president Sata.

Mr. Mwanza said people close the president are “feeding on him like ticks and will never advise him accordingly” because they are scared of losing their positions.

“The people that are close to Mr. Sata are feeding on him like ticks and they will never advise president Sata to take leave because once he takes leave they also live. They are surrounding him and they are feeding from him and they will never tell him the truth.

“The best people that can advise president Sata are his children and my advise is let the Lusaka mayor Mulenga Sata sit down with the father; it is his children, its his wife who apparently was nervously giggling as her husband struggled with the speech in parliament who can advise properly. Those surrounding president Sata are their because of him and they will never tell him the truth,” Mr. Mwanza.

He added: “they have no life after president Sata, you have seen what happened to Wynter Kabimba- he had no life beyond Sata and those are the same characters surrounding president Sata and they will continue feeding from, look at his main men, Honorable Chikwanda nominated Minister he has no job beyond Sata, actually the people that surround Mr. Sata don’t care about him but about there pockets and they will be flocking to him and will never advise him to take a break so mayor Mulenga Sata has to have a serious talk with the father he needs to take a break.”

And Mr Mwanza said it has become very clear that the president is not in a physical state to continue presiding over the affairs of the nation.

He notes that from what people where treated to on Friday when the president opened parliament it is clear that the nation is on auto pilot which the country can not afford with the many challenges her people are facing.

[pullquote]Bishop Mambo said that government leadership is so drunk with power , so rich and so corrupt adding that Zambia has become a country with leaders who are not honest to both the President and the people of Zambia.[/pullquote]

“It is clear that president Sata is not in a position to continue running the affairs of this nation, he has difficulties even talking, you have to pay extra-ordinary attention if you have to hear what he is saying. The failure by the president to have a clear voice projection tells everybody that all is not well with him.

“If the president loves himself, its not even about the country anymore, if he loves himself then the president has to take leave and if he doesn’t want to take leave we have provisions in our constitution which we can use to make him do that.”

Mr. Mwanza further added: ” MPs have to take a serious assessment of president Sata’s status and judge as to whether president Sata can continue or not. The problem that we have here is not about president Sata but the 13million plus people that we have in this country that are suffering and need their lives to be up lifted.”

Meanwhile, Former Church of God Overseer Bishop John Mambo has doubted genuineness in the people surrounding President Michael Sata.

[pullquote]He further stated that the church should now not pretend but begin to organize national prayers for the President’s well being.[/pullquote]

Bishop Mambo says President Sata should not have been subjected to opening the fourth session of the eleventh national assembly in the health state he appears to be in.

Bishop Mambo noted that much as the President has a heart to work, he should not panic if he can not manage to work but needs to rest until he is much better.

He added that exposing the President on Friday during the opening Parliament brings big question on what type of leadership the country has citing that it gives an impression that all those surrounding him have hidden agendas.

Bishop Mambo said that government leadership is so drunk with power , so rich and so corrupt adding that Zambia has become a country with leaders who are not honest to both the President and the people of Zambia.

He further stated that the church should now not pretend but begin to organize national prayers for the President’s well being.

Rating Agency Fitch Revises Zambia’s Economic Outlook from Negative to Positive

Fitch Ratings has revised its outlook on Zambia’s Long-term ratings to positive from stable and affirmed the ‘B’ rating.

In a statement, Fitch said the revision of the outlook on Zambia reflects the fact that the outlook for Zambia’s public finances is more positive compared with October 2013, when it downgraded the Long-term outlook to ‘B’.

It says the risk remains that the government will overrun the deficit in 2014, due to the better than expected maize harvest and consequent spending pressure from the Food Reserve Agency, higher wages, as well as the payment of VAT refunds.

Fitch has since forecast a deficit of 5.8% of GDP and an improved fiscal outlook as well as strong GDP growth to contain the debt burden.
Fitch expects consolidated general government debt to peak at 33% of GDP in 2016, well below ‘B’ peers.

It observed that the policy environment has improved, following the uncertainty initially created after the election of President Michael Sata.
“Early pronouncements from the new administration led Fitch to revise the Outlook to Negative in February 2012. However, the decision to revoke regulations that were adversely impacting the foreign exchange market is credit supportive. Although risks persist, particularly ahead of the elections, the business environment has not deteriorated as much as previously expected and the likelihood of significant and adverse policy shifts has significantly reduced.”

“The fiscal outturn for 2013 which was 5.7% of GDP or 6.6% prior to GDP rebasing came out significantly below the budget figure of 8.6% of GDP announced in August 2013. Furthermore, fiscal data for the first six months of 2014 suggest that the deficit was well contained at 2% of GDP which was against a target of 2.5% of GDP,” the statement said.

Fitch says although this partly reflects higher-than-expected VAT receipts due to the build-up in VAT refund arrears making up 2.5% of GDP to exporters, it acknowledges the commitment to expenditure restraint over the first half of 2014.

It added, “The authorities’ decision to approach the IMF, combined with the latest medium-term expenditure framework, which shows the budget deficit falling to 3.2% of GDP by 2017, suggests renewed commitment to fiscal prudence by the government. However, possible pre-election spending ahead of the 2016 presidential contest, failure to agree on an IMF programme as well as the repayment of VAT arrears to mining companies once a final agreement is reached, all add to fiscal risks.”

It added, “Inflation remains above the Bank of Zambia’s 6.5% year-end inflation target. The current account is expected to remain in surplus over the medium term, supported by rising copper production and broadly stable copper prices. Foreign companies’ repatriation of profits abroad is more than offset by strong inflows of FDI.”

“The recent Eurobond issue has boosted reserves above three months of current external payments. The decision to revoke exchange rate regulations as well as the announcement that the government intends to approach the IMF has seen the local currency appreciate 12.9% since May, after a sharp sell-off in the first half of 2014. Nevertheless, the kwacha remains sensitive to external shocks from capital flows or copper prices.”

The Freedom Ride cyclists who started off from Chililabombwe on a campaign ride against gender based violence (GBV) passed Lusaka Saturday en rout to livingstone.

Speaking during The Freedom Ride flag off from Lusaka Gender and Child Development Minister Inoge Wina has challenged women across the country to show interest and participate in sensitization activities meant to curb gender based violence GBV such as the bicycle ride campaign.

Ms. Wina observed that women’s participation in such activities will not only keep them fit but show their commitment to ending GBV in the country.

She commended Catherine Phiri the only female participant and challenged more woman to take part in such activities as women were the most affected by the scourge.

Ms. Wina also commended organizers of the bicycle ride saying the country needs all stakeholders to be pulling in the same direction in the quest to end GBV saying we need to step up efforts to stop GBV from destroying and eroding the country’s peace, dignity, prosperity and legacy.

And Swedish Ambassador to Zambia Lena Nordstorm said Children’s and women’s rights are at the centre of both the development and growth democracy in the country.

Ms. Nordstorm said without recognizing children’s rights as well as those of women the country will neither develop nor will the democracy grow as children are the future of any nation and women are essential to their development.

She explained that children are citizens as well hence their rights should be respected and added that women have the right to participate in the development of the country as well as in its politics.

Meanwhile Zambia Police Victim Support National Coordinator Threspord Kasale representing the police IG Stella Libongani said efforts such as the bicycle ride should be encouraged as GBV has continued to be a problem in the country hence new ideas of sensitization the public should be welcomed.

He said there is need for the public to participate in the fight against GBV as the scourge affects everyone in the country both the victims and non-victims saying if you are not a victim then someone you is a victim.

Today’s Message: Choose Faith over Fear

40

bible

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“This is my command — be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
(Joshua 1:9, NLT)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

Did you know that fear works just like faith but in the opposite direction? Faith opens the door for God to work in our lives; fear opens the door for the enemy to work in our lives.

The Bible says that fear has torment. Fear has no mercy. If you act on fear instead of acting on faith, it will keep you depressed, miserable and lonely. So many people today are missing out on God’s joy, peace and victory because they keep giving in to fear. They feed fear by what they watch on TV or at the movies. They worry and dwell on all the bad things. Don’t let that be you! Romans tells us that faith comes by hearing the Word of God. The more you fill your heart and mind with God’s Word, the stronger you will be so you can stand against the powers of darkness.

Remember, the power that is in you is greater than the power of fear. When thoughts come that say, “You’re not able,” choose faith by saying, “I can do all things through Christ!” Choose faith today so you can overcome fear and live in the freedom and victory God has in store for you!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father, I receive Your Word today which is life, health and strength to me. I choose to close the door on fear by guarding what I say, what I listen to and what I dwell on. Fill me with Your love and faith as I meditate on Your Word in Jesus’ name. Amen.

President Michael Sata is not being forced to work – Guy Scott

48
Vice President Guy Scott is welcomed by Deputy Skeaker of the National Assembly Mkondo Lungu when he arrived at Parliament.
Vice President Guy Scott is welcomed by Deputy Skeaker of the National
Assembly Mkondo Lungu when he arrived at Parliament.

Republican Vice president Guy Scott says President Michael Sata is not being forced by anyone in government to continue working despite widespread fears that he is unwell and that he should take a rest.

Dr. Scott siad that if President Sata has chosen to continue working despite calls that he takes a rest from his presidential duties to recuperate from his alleged illness, it is because the President knows that it is the right thing to do to continue with his work.

He has told Qfm news in an interview that people that are calling for the Head of State to rest should be mindful that politicians do not rest as they would want President Sata to.

Dr. Scott has wondered why some people in the country are insisting that President Sata takes a rest when he himself does not want to.

He has observed that some of the people calling for the Head of State to take break a from work are only pretending to be more humane people than they really are as he thinks that they allegedly want what he has termed as an easy technical knockout for them to ascend to the top.

Dr. Scott said that he however thinks that nothing can change in the Zambian politics if people who are calling for the Head of State to rest, they themselves should take a rest.

The republican vice president has also wondered what the problem is for President Sata to stay in public now when earlier people were calling for his appearing in public.

He said that he further thinks that the issue of President Sata’s well-being has been over brown by the media and by some people who want to get top jobs without going through an election.

Dr. Scott said that as far as he is concerned he is happy that the President opened Parliament on Friday yesterday and did give a brief description of the PF government’s policy and a good indication of the ruling party’s direction.

He said that he does think that there can be anyone in the opposition who can now give an after thought about President Sata opening Parliament.

Reaction To The Opening Of Parliament by MMD President Nevers Mumba

(right) looks on when he arrived at Parliament grounds

First and foremost, it is with deep sadness and forbearance that I am compelled to make a detailed comment on the unusual events that transpired before and during the opening of the Fourth Session of the Eleventh National Assembly on Friday the 19th of September 2014.

I note with great concern the fact that the private media and other international news agencies were not allowed to cover the opening of parliament in preference to Government and pro-Government media. This is an unacceptable infringement on the freedoms of the media that they have enjoyed in our country for the past 23 years.

Clearly, this is proof that President Michael Sata and the Patriotic Front government have no belief in freedom of media nor are they interested in freedom of information. This behavior also creates room for speculation, given the fact that a shroud of secrecy seems to be the intended objective of excluding the private media. We condemn this action in the strongest words possible.

Secondly, I wish to point out what was so painfully clear in the minds of all of us who gathered to listen to a policy direction to be given by the President. It is indisputable that the President failed to give the policy direction to the National Assembly and the nation as a whole. We, the citizens are unaware what policy issues will be debated by the members of parliament since no such direction was given.

The contents of what was laid on the table are unknown to the country and the manner in which the affairs at parliament were conducted was bizarre and unbecoming of a country celebrating fifty years of its independence. This appears to be the first time in our country’s fifty years in which parliament has been opened without setting the policy agenda of that life of parliament. This is unacceptable in a jubilee year. We strongly urge all members of parliament to seriously reflect on the short-comings of what transpired in our country.

Thirdly, it is with a very heavy heart that I now express concern with what appears to be a lack of good health by our Republican President. Clearly, all is not well with our head of state. He and the first lady need our sympathies and prayers at this critical time that the first family is going through. The actions taken by those who handle presidential matters were totally inappropriate and raise serious questions of professional competence, negligence and unethical conduct.

It is not right, nor is it a proper display of concern to expose the president in the manner he was exposed during the opening of Parliament. We wish to advise that greater concern, care and courage needs to be exercised by those closest to the president, both for his sake as an individual, as well as for his family and the country at large.

Earlier in the year, we had advised the PF to demystify the sickness of the president and be accountable to the Zambian people by giving regular briefs on the condition of the President. This is the normal practice all over the world. Unfortunately, the PF government decided to shroud the condition of the president in secrecy.

Vice-President Dr Guy Scott went further to state that the President was in perfect health and discharging his duties normally, and that anyone who asked about his condition was being malicious. By this act alone, Dr Scott has shown high levels of immorality and irresponsibility and has once again lied to the Zambian people.

We are unaware of the reasons why the PF chose the path of insincerity when Zambians are a Christian people with compassion. If the state of the President’s health had been explained, the Zambian people would have rallied in concerted prayer all over the nation to petition God to heal the President.

Unfortunately, PF denied the President this opportunity. The result of this action is what we saw during the opening of Parliament where the President was pushed to perform a duty that clearly outstripped his strength. This was a cruel act by Dr Scott and his cohorts.

Resulting from the above, serious questions regarding the health of the president have to be raised. An honest explanation of the current state of affairs needs to be given to the nation and necessary precautions taken thereafter. Questions as to how the affairs of the nation are being conducted by implication have to be raised and answers provided for. We all have to ensure that the intent of the constitution and the rules that govern the process of the governed are being strictly adhered to.

We have to insure that no room for instability and dislocation will result from careless lapses and failure for the whole country to acknowledge what is being discussed in whispers. The leadership of the PF has to be bold, the churches of our country have to exercise moral intuition and all the political players must show selfless leadership as we attempt to face the realities of our situation.

The President needs to rest. If any one claims to love the President, they will agree with us that he needs to be given enough time to recover form his illness. We therefore advise that the President be allowed to take medical leave and rest until he recovers. This is his constitutional right and it is provided for in the laws of Zambia.

God bless Zambia.

A 15-year old boy shocked people when he was discovered to have travelled from Lundazi to Lusaka on a bus chassis.
The visibly distressed, soiled and hungry Frederick Mbewe was discovered by taxi drivers who were offloading luggage from the bus at Juldan Mortars bus stop along Lusaka’s Freedom Way.

Mbewe from Chief Magodi’s area said he decided to take the highly risky initiative of hiding and travelling under a bus because he had no money for a bus fair.

The teenager was headed for Solowezi to find his mother a Ms Charity Ngulube whom he said was married to a Mr Misheck Chinyundu a worker at Kalumbila mines.Mbewe said his decision to take such a risky venture was arrived at
after he was encircled in abject poverty and hunger after the demise of his only guardian- the grandmother.

The boy narrated that he started off from his village around 03:00 hours to take a brave 13-hour-walk to the bus station in Lundazi town.

“I had to wait at the station for the 01: 00 hours bus to Lusaka, so around 23 hours, I managed to sneak under the bus and found some space between the rear wheels, the journey was painful but what could I have
done? ” he said.

Driver of the bus Shadreck Musatwe said he could not believe that the boy arrived alive in Lusaka bearing in mind the dusty condition under a high-speed bus and in mostly bumpy areas.

“I thank God that this boy is alive because had he died, it would have been a very big issue where we could have even been linked to rituals,” he said.

Mr Musatwe said there was need for the boy to undergo a thorough medical checkup as he might have gotten mentally disturbed through head knocks and that heavy dust night have infected his chest.

The teenager was by press time taken to Millennium Police Post for questioning although the move was opposed by many suggesting that he had not committed a crime but that was under undue pressure.

PRESIDENT Michael Sata and his delegation will participate in the general debate of the United Nations(UN) GeneralAssembly which has drawn leaders from across the globe.

Mr Sata, whose delegation includes Foreign Affairs minister Harry Kalaba, Transport, Communication, Works and Supply minister Yamfwa Mukanga and Mwansa Kapeya from Lands, will also engage in other high-level meetings at the UN headquarters here.

Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Dr Mwaba Kasese-Bota announced today that First Lady Dr Christine will also participate and subsequently be honoured as e-health Ambassador at a ceremony tomorrow.

“It is a very important session of the UN General Assembly in the sense that we are now getting towards the end of the millenium development goals,” she said of the 69th General Assembly whose theme is ‘Delivering on and implementing a transformative post-2015 development agenda.’

On Monday, Zambia will participate in a special session of the International Conference on Population and Development(ICPD), which will be followed by a climate change meeting to be convened by UN General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon.

Mr Mukanga will chair the Landlocked Developing Countries(LLDC) meeting.

Dr Kasese-Bota said the Heads of State are also going to speak about their response to the dread Ebola virus which has affected some West African countries.

“The UN Security Council this week passed a resolution calling for increased efforts to address the Ebola outbreak. His Excellency President Sata told me that we should go and support the resolution on Ebola. Indeed Zambia supported the resolution on Ebola,” she said.

The other issue which will feature at the biggest World international organisation meeting is peace and security in the Middle East and in the Great Lakes Region.
